Hey, dev of Dreamed Away here :)
Thanks for the honest review and for the feedback!
A few points:
- The maze mechanics have been updated in the latest version of the demo to be much less punishing and time consuming.
- Eating broccoli twice reverts back controls to normal now
- While there's no town in the demo, there will be in the full game, with shops and everything
- I'm considering adding a merchant in the first dungeon as well, that would make sense.
Again, thanks for the feedback, it's exactly what we need to make the game better!
Awesome, I would love to have access to an updated demo sometime in the future to make a new review reflecting the changes, because like I said, there's the bones of a great game here - there's just a few design decisions that hold it back from greatness and I want you to make the best game possible! I wish you all the best in your endeavors!
It's looks great. What's the ETA on a switch release?
There will be a new update tomorrow on Steam, I'll let you know when it's out!
How come the game isn’t coming out on PlayStation?
The new update is out on Steam!
The changelog is quite big, but here are some important changes since the initial demo release (which I believe is the version you played):
- Reduce enemy encounters
- Design changes in the maze in chapter 1 to be less punishing (and time consuming)
- New merchant in the dungeon
- Better state management in the dungeon to allow for backtracking
If you decide to make a new review, please let me know, I'd love to know what you think.
I wish this was more Earthbound and less Undertale, but it is what it is.
definitely
That being the case I might have to pass on this one 😢 it looks very good though!
hard pass for me. i am not a fan of undertale's system.
Are you not a huge fan of undertale's "bullet hell" battle system? I'm a huge earthbound guy but I always found that aspect of undertale far more interesting than earthbound's pretty generic battle system
I think one problem of everyone trying to replicate Undertale and Earthbound is that many people don't really seem to understand them... Or rather, that we were getting very different things from them. Devs are too quick to insert dark, psychological themes and their own idea of non-heroic virtuousness, maybe leading to that early dark and mazy dungeon... But they don't really go deep into, for example, what it means to transfer typical JRPG mechanics into the modern day childhood setting. Sure, make it a metaphor for depression... At the end, if you want, but what about beig homesick, having a runny nose, using an ATM, bottle rockets and pencil erasers? I'm at that point when I'm especially nostalgic about my 90s childhood in a small village, and rather than think about dark themes I wasn't aware of at the time, I'd rather have a JRPG in that setting have me getting magical stickers from bubblegum or fighting using... Super soakers, slingshots, rubberband crossbows and sticky hands. And maybe getting buffs and debuffs from excess sugar or tv consumption.
This just seems like a difference in taste thing. A game dev is able to be influenced by earthbound without replicating those things about it. I mean Lisa is influenced by earthbound and goes for a pretty different tone afaik
David's acting is why I love this channel. It just adds this fun flavour. It isn't "good" but it's a soothing and unique delivery..thanks man
I'm becoming a subscriber now!! I was window shopping in your channel for a while but if it wasn't for you, I would not have come across a game like this. Thanks for always being on top such fun JRPGS.
Looks like an interesting time. Hopefully they're listening to feedback and have an awesome final game! I love these short first impressions on demos, by the way!
I appreciate the way you always give a thought to players with different skill levels and experience in reviews like this! I'm looking forward to checking this out myself! I'll be extra excited if I can play this in French, since I sometimes play my games in French but not all of them are set there :)
The demo is fully localized to French now :)
Now, this is a unique looking RPG that I'm gonna put on my wishlist. Here's hoping they're gonna iron out the problems
It's interesting how a game that wasn't super popular in the US when it came out has inspired so many modern indie games.
Earthbound is a game not everyone likes, many don't, but anyone who loves it, basically considers it one of the greatest games ever made and super dear to their hearts, which explains why it inspires so many of those people to make games like it.
Thats because they only like whats popular and cant make up their own mind on what they like
@@jikosauce it wasn't a judgement, the velvet underground weren't very popular when they came out, but they've inspired dozens of super popular and influential bands and musicians. I just think it's interesting how something's impact can supercede it's initial popularity.
Im actually looking forward for this game. I mean there is still time and things are getting improved, right? Cant wait to see where this is going
Always enjoy your videos
Thanks for the review.
I'll definitely be checking out this demo, but Cave to Rhone? I felt that in my SOUL. Not sure whether I hate teleporter mazes or minefields of a million pit traps worse, but I'm with you: I hope that's just a one-off, because I did like what you showed here.
The mechanic of the maze has been considerably improved, it doesn't work the same way anymore.
Poking everyone it's a shame youtube doesn't have the poke function 😉
What an adorable Mr Saturn behind your head! Where on earth did you get it?!? It must be the most well made Mr Saturn in existence!
Hahahaha! Thank you Daddy Cutmaster!
The game looks good to me, probably not a masterpiece, but seems fun.
I think the broccoli was an attempt to mimic what the mushrooms does in Earthbound with it reversing your controls.
Where did that Earthbound soundtrack come from in your video? It sounds so beautiful!
Good game will def buy
Maybe these devs will be smart enough to listen to your advice. #David'sLaw
Will I ever finish my RPG Maker MZ game project in 2024... *Pressing and mashing X to doubt further on...*
💙💙
I guess its possible its like Sea of Stars. That demo drops you into the game downstream of the beginning. You have your partner and another character and are riding some kind of dragon initially. But this game doesn't sound great. Hopefully they take some feedback.
That being said the Sea of Stars demo boss would have kicked the crap out of me but I was playing with my son who was good at fishing, so we had lots of healing and I could time attacks( thanks Mario RPG). We won by the skin of our teeth.
Lots of beta demo games don't give you the full world to explore. A lot of your complaints for missing things are most likely things to be added still same for the different ghost sprites in the dungeon. As for getting lost, you've played old rpgs, make a map if it's giving you trouble.
Really feel like you go hard on games you don't like bad points.
Looks like Mother 3/Oddity (if that ever comes out) with a bit of Undertale. Looks fun but needs some work.
"What if I was absolutely terrible at the combat system, and I had to heal after every regular encounter." - Me playing Undertale... And that's why I've never finished the game. You didn't have to call me out like that 😅
Makes me think of Omori, but less likely to make me ugly cry.
Still haven't played Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass Dave.
Liked, commented and subscribed (but like forever ago).
Have you thought about streaming RPGs? I’d watch it
I do! there’s a link to my twitch in the comments :)
@@davidvinc oh man. I’ve been missing out!!! We love the same RPGs.
UnderBound
Think I'll stip looking at your twitter I keep loosing my head lol
Also how in earth u have time to do anything iv never seen so many videos I used to spend a lot of time on Facebook
Wait...did I just here you say PC, Switch and Xbox systems? No PS? Wow, how the turntables...
Oh I was into it until I saw the battle system. Not for me.
Ugh i was so interested in this because of the art but the battle system is a major major turn off to me to the point I doubt I play it
Since Earthbound is my favourite game, this definitely intrigues me but a lot of what you said sounds super disappointing...so I may be passing.
Thank you for playing it so I don't have to. I hated the Undertale battle system and I don't think this looks any more promising.
I feel like its a bit off to say something is a mashup, when Undertale was already inspired by Earthbound.
That's a great point. I guess he should have said it's an Undertale clone.
Did you see the battle system? Definitely didn't come from Earthbound.
Why can't people just get it right? We know what sucks in an RPG. I feel like Bravely Default 2 got it mostly right (especially being able to see Boss HP). Final Fantasy VI is the the golden standard. We need to see the experience earned. We need to see the stat growth. We need weapons, and no...broccoli has never caused my world to flip - and I eat it almost every night! The presentation looks excellent, but all the nuances of this game sound like a deterrent.
Rats when I was going back in time to find your first video youtube crashed on me to much data I'll try again later
Well it looks like a good try lol. This game doesn't look like my cup of tea
Is the indie community not tired of making EB knockoffs? Like, copy a good game for once
Looks like a great game if they get rid of all that nonsense. Don’t reverse my controls, that’s just stupid.
