This lens, being so small and light, punches definitely above its weight. I did a similar modification with my mother's Смена camera and a Sony A7, and I'm very happy with the result!
Thank you Mathieu! An alternative: Schneider-Kreuznach Radionar L 45mm f2.8 found on Adox cameras (Polo 1, Polomat etc.) at around 20 EUR can out-resolve modern lenses (good at 700% magnification on a 40+MP sensor). It uses M25X0.5 mount and needs a flange distance of 38mm from the back element (17mm-31mm M42 helicoid on a Sony would work). At f2.8 it has some spherical aberration aka "Leica Glow" which disappears at f4, but above f4 the resolution, micro-contrast, and depth rendering are absolutely astonishing. Both foreground and background bokeh are very good (almost neutral) for a Cooke Triplet. Just make sure to get a lens with a serial number above 6.000.000 manufactured after May 1959 for better lens coatings. Fun fact - the L stands for Lanthanum which is used in the flint element for a higher diffraction index.
Chapeau bas for your effort to find out proper pronunciation 👍 Smena was very popular as a first camera for kids also in Poland, so I had it too. Thanks for bringing back nice memories.
I tried doing this with a Kodak Pony lens, but i cant figure out disassembly. Thanks for this video, it may have given me an idea on how to go about it
The word "СМЕНА" ( is implied "shift") in the USSR denoted the period of children's stay in a summer camp (I don't know how accurately I managed to translate it). "Летняя смена" - "Summer shift"
The adapters you have Amazon links to aren't compatible with one another! I ordered them but the M25 to M42 adapter doesn't screw on to the M42 Helicoide!
So ,i saw your first video about the lomo t43 and this is something i am familiar to. I made a permanent version using a helios 44 2 helicoid and inserted the lens inside ,closed the light gaps and got some insane results !
Very interesting. While looking for the adapters I realised that you link to a wrong (IMO) M25 to M42 adapter. The one you link to has a fenale M42 thread and the one shown in you video has a male one. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Hi Mathew, after watching your video I bought one T-22 and adapted it for my Fuji XE-4. The photos are simply amazing. I also got a Lomo T-43, which exhibits a reduction in quality compared to the older T-22.
I think the outermost ring of the lens is supposed to be aperture, but when I turn it nothing happens. Do I have a defective one? Also, the adapter I ordered says 12-17mm, but I'm not sure if that's right. When I put the lens on my camera using an M42 to EF-M adapter, it's too far away from the sensor to focus on anything more than a foot away. And it looks like it needs to be closer to the sensor to get to infinity, but the adapter seems like it will move it even further away. If anyone else has put this on an EF-M mount successfully let me know what you did.
I dont recommend rubbing an old lens like that to clean it 😢 the old ones out there are not multi coated and could scratch easily. Ive put a couple micro scratches on my helios 40-1 this way 😢
after you cleaned the optics with a cotton swab, I almost lost consciousness. You are not allowed to clean optics. There is microfiber, special products and lubricant.

The level of sharpness is surprising for such an old lens. Plus unintended ASMR in the middle of video? I'm all for it 😌
Right?!, I should do more ASMR :)
@@MathieuStern you've a knack for it. I'm pretty sure it'd be nice to make one once in a while.

Good info. Thanks
Greetings from Russia
The main feature of this camera is that it became the most affordable camera, absolutely everyone in the USSR could afford it.
I bet a 3d printed adapter could be made pretty easily to secure it in place of the gaffer's tape!
I'm not really a fan of old lenses and film cameras, but I have to admit that this particular one is pretty cool.
Ничего себе! Такой дешевый, а результат на миллион!
Спасибо за труд!
спасибо за поддержку мой друг
probably the most interesting camera channel out there
Probably ? :))
I remember having Smena when I was a kid.
The garden with the pyramid bushes and fountain are giving strong Last Year At Marienbad vibes.
Thank you! Now i have sufficient motivation to do mine adapter.
I had this camera as a kid making my first photos.
Thanks Mathieu! This is very informative. I was wondering if you had any tips on using this with a FujiX camera? Or with a Canon RF mount?
Pretty amazing for so tiny lens. And nice video as always
Add more thin strip of tape once mounted will prevent the lens from pulling out as easy.

Oh cool! I didn’t know about Poland
great video mathieu. am going to try this lens on my panasnoic gh4. like the t43 lomo.many thanks for sharing

Not a problem, we have whole US national treasury worth of these in Russia
Приятное видео, спасибо!

Amazing, would this have the same effect on an aps-c?
Where did you get this thoroid piece? i think i have old smena just like that somewhere, i should do same thing to my Nikon
What excat M42 helicoid should I get? I'll be using an M42 analog camera!
Would it also work in a C-Mount adapter or is the diameter to big for that?
DaaaaAaaamn😮🔥
If this little lens could talk what stories it would tell.Excellent👍🏻
That would be cool!

Quite a nice lens suprisingly.
Thank you for sharing and helping me spend my money! 😉
Happy to help!
great video, can you post the name of anamorphic adapter you used in the video please.
Amazing footage
Glad you liked it!

Any chance you can share a parts list?
Awesome
Lovely lens
great!
Lovely
My mom had Smena 1 or 2, back in 1960s
Actually смена means also Shift
Hello, Congratulations! Could you write the names/types of the adapters?
Yes I can, i will put everything in the description
у меня есть Смена 8М, мой первый фотоаппарат, работает до сих пор. Объектив похож.
I bought one recently, annoyingly there's some fungus on inside of the lens.
Oh, man, wait until you experience Industar removed from FED Micron or lens from Smena-3, they’re perfect for crop cameras.

am going to try this lens on my panasnoic gh4 i had success on the lomo t43. and can reach to if and down to 36 cm. so it should work on yours
Would it work with an APS-C?
sure, but you will get a 70mm lens
What adapters are suitable for M4/3 and Sony APS-C?
exactly the same for Sony Apsc
for M43 you need a flat M42 to M4/3
@@MathieuStern Thank you very much! 👋
Nice!
Thanks!
For eos dslr will work ?
no, only on mirrorless
gaff tape fixes literally everything

смена is a “new generation” in this case of meanings :)
