MRE Still GOOD After 20 YEARS In A TRUCK? 1991 Vintage BBQ Pork & Rice Meal Ready to Eat Taste Test

  • Let's eat a 32 Year Old US MRE! The previous owner of this ration said he stored it inside his truck for the past 20 years. This Vintage meal ready to eat is Menu 1 from 1991, Pork with Rice in Barbecue Sauce. I've always said keeping your Rations in a vehicle is a great way to ruin them but maybe I was wrong in this case!

At 10:04 - "...as far as my mouth goes, I am feeling a slight amount of numbness" - That is a red flag especially since you had it in the past. It's possibly poison doing that (toxins from bacteria) or a condition called "mouth anxiety". What is mouth anxiety? It's the physical effects that anxiety may have on your tongue and mouth. These effects may include tingling, twitching, numbness, burning, or pain in your tongue or mouth. Good review‼We pressure can meat, and the beef we canned in 2010 still tastes perfect in 2023. No need to refrigerate but we do store all our food on cool and dark basement shelves. We also do chicken, turkey and ham, plus jars of broth for gravy. The taste is like grandma made it yesterday. Store what you eat, eat what you store. Canned goods, dry pasta products, noodles, jars of tomato sauces, "helper" products, coffee, powdered milk, TP, etc, etc. Oh yeah, and always smell it first. We could skip going to the store for years.

Tastiest MRE I ever had! It was friggin delicious. People used to go thru boxes for that one , the spaghetti and meatballs, and a third one I forget
Oh, and the chocolate covered graham cookie. ..woo.. that was tasty..
I miss those tastes by far over the other ones.. us military MRE conneisuer.. 1993-2002.

The corned beef hash! That's it. And a meatball one was good too.
The heaviest and heartiest. The ham slice and potatoes au gratin.. that was most filling.

I'm sure I ate a couple of this same one, but I never cared for the Applesauce, it wasn't good Applesauce I didn't think. This MRE must be about the time they stopped putting in the Instant Coffee type one,and started the Folgers. When they did come out with Heaters, sometime in the 90s, they were issued separately, and eventually they started putting it in the actual MRE bag.

Very cool RR. First of all, good luck! They call them vintage for A reason, LOL. This should be interesting? Nice statement, on using judgement on meals. When in doubt, throw it out! Dang, coffee still good?????? Old creamer can go bad as well. You lucked out on the drinks. No bleach smell on crackers, cool. Now for the main? Well, better than I expected. Applesauce, I would be leery of? I hope no ill effects. Nicely done friend. Glad you had fun with this. Peace, John.

That flavor might be impending death. Well, I’m impressed, slightly scared. I decided to go through my food preps today. 3 cases of MREs (mnfr date of around and about 2009 or so. Have a bunch of the single entrees and decided to eat a Chicken n Rice with Vegetables. No bulging to the package. In its original cardboard wrap. No damage to the foil pack. About 3/4 of the way through I thought to myself…huh, am I gonna die ? So I decided to finish it and watch a few videos to see how I’m going to die. My preps are stored in the coolest room of my house, in a footlocker type tote that has been insulated with 1.5” styrofoam with a styrofoam bottom and lid. I figure if pork, of all things besides chicken was stored in, quite possibly, the worst conditions ever is still good after roughly 30 yrs, I should be ok. It would be just my luck that I’d survive the initial Zombie Apocalypse and die from food poisoning. 😳😵‍💫 🤣😂😅

I'm about to take the plunge on one of mine packaged in 2012. There have been a few hot days throughout the years when we lost power in our home, for example, but generally temps have ranged from 60-75 degrees throughout, and we've moved several times. I know we did eat two or three of these same MREs in 2022 and everything was fine except for the package of sour skittles (they were a huge clumped mess, but I think that's more of the horrible quality of the product and not the condition of the MRE). This was a 12pc MRE "Train as We Fight" box that was purchased directly from Maxwell AFB in Alabama in 2012. I'll come back and update my post (if I don't die ) X_x.

This is a great demonstration, thank you! I’ve been soooo confused about longevity of these things. Just Google it and the .gov and other sources act like these things arnt good for anymore then like 3yrs maybe 5 yrs if your lucky. Some places say even 6 mo.
That’s basically the same thing as unopened canned goods so why would I spend tons of $$ on MRE’s if they only last as long as canned foods on the self.
I know word of mouth is like 10-20yrs but honestly it would just suck if we got a bunch of these for survival just to die from that very thing. Lol ya know.

This kid needs to prepare everything before you start eating or drinking! Is this a kid or an adult? Just curious. Cool review! I save store and eat my MREs by date. I have some at least ten, twelve or a bit more. So long as each package has been inspected for moisture, mold or any cuts or openings then it should be just fine regardless of the date! I’ve had some old ones but if it weren’t from the printed date, I wouldn’t even know the difference because they have always tasted great! I also have a large storage of spices. So I can always add a little bit of whatever whatever my MRE needs and it’s just like fine dining! It’s cheaper than a restaurant, saves trips to the store and there are plenty around just incase! Back in March of 2020 when the Coronavirus first hit, everyone was going crazy and stores were in short supply of food, toilet paper and everything else! I had my MREs with toilet paper, matches and so much more! My house was locked up tight because we didn’t know what to expect. I was really thankful to have everything I had on hand and ready because I was also taking care of my Grandparents. These MREs are a delicious life saver along with the extra toilet paper and matches along with everything else. I was stretching one MRE into two small meals and maybe an extra snack just to maintain dietary discipline to make my rations last as long as I could until it was safe enough for the majority of the world to resume normal activity.

They don't make MRE's like those any more. Modern ones aren't meant to survive 20 years plus though they could under ideal conditions. I've had Humanitarian meals 13-14 years old and beside some discoloration, were still edible and consumable. I miss these brown bag MRE's
