Resizing a Seiko pin and collar bracelet on a Sumo or Monster

- Seiko tend to use a slightly unique pin system for their bracelet links; rather than just one pin that goes straight through both sides of the link, they have a pin that goes in one end and then a collar that fits around it the other end. This video shows that you can resize one of these bracelets in 5 minutes.

really wish I'd watched this before pinging my collars all over the room
Me too! I was just surprised to see those little things scattered on my work table! I sized my watch just last week. It's been fine, but I hope I did it right and the pins don't just fall out and cause the watch to fall to its doom. I don't want to do it again.
A trick : you can watch movies on Flixzone. I've been using it for watching all kinds of movies recently.
@Briar Donovan definitely, I've been watching on flixzone} for since december myself =)
I really dislike the pin & collar system. Even when you think they are in securely, they seem to fall apart. Augh!
Thank you for the video! I took my 4th gen Monster to my local jeweller a couple of months ago to be sized and he hadn’t seen the system before, but he did it anyway and was successful! Just got a 1st gen Monster so I think I’ll do it myself!
Also, I never realised how nice looking the Sumos were, might have to grab one for myself!
Great video. I like the pen trick. I have re-watched your video each time I get a new Sumo and need to resize. Thank you.
Spent 3 hours trying to adjust my king turtle. Got frustrated and ordered a strap and strapcode bracelet. An hour later, watched this video, tried it with the ballpoint pen and adjusted it in less than 10 mins.
This video was a massive help in helping me take out links of my new sumo, even used the pen trick at the end 😀👍
Just got a new Samurai with the bracelet on the longest extension, glad I found this video!
Great video on how to size Seiko pin and collar bracelet. My heart stopped beating when your watch fell on the table lol 😂. Watching your video was extremely helpful when I recently sized my Sumo bracelet which I just got about two weeks ago. Don’t know people complain so
much about the pin and collar system. It’s not that hard to accomplish . Patience and right tools and just pay attention to what is needed to do and no problem. I actually love the stock Seiko bracelet 😀👍🏻
Great, thanks! Glad it was helpful for you
My answer to Seiko's PITA pin & collar system is to buy a better bracelet from Strapcode that uses screws.
whapaso strapcode is kinda expensive and a serious upgrade it’s not fun to do but if done correctly the pin and collar bracelets are very good and secure, if a $300 watch needs a $100 bracelet then cool go for it
It's been nearly 2 hours and I just can't get that bloody cuff back in. Fiddly is an understatement! Whoever invented this pin system needs permanent itchy piles!
Your video is very helpful in making sense of an absolutely absurd, archaic system that seiko insists on using. I cannot help but despite seiko for using such a terrible system for bracelet adjustment when there are so many other better options. I just bought a seiko sumo and am beyond disappointed in this rubbish bracelet.
The SPB149 requires the collar be inserted on the inner hole of the joining link! Phew.
Wouldn't have been able to figure it out without your comment. Thanks!
@@kimchiyuki awesome! Enjoy this beautiful piece!
Exactly what I wanted to know ! Thanks a lot.
I did it the exact way you did but when you finish you should look at the pin and collar side to make sure the collar is recessed the same amount as the other pin and collars on the bracelet….. thanks for the video
The Pen trick was genius ! Thx
My pleasure!
Great watch.
Thank you very much!!!
Ouch! Another reason to hate those friggin collars!
when is the sumo review coming?
i had problems getting the collar back in place, but the clasp on my solar sumo gmt's bracelet was also bent out of operable shape and i couldn't fix it. Ended up switching to a rubber strap and will be trying out a strapcode bracelet when it arrives and won't have to deal with pin and collar or a flimsy cheap safety clasp.
Helps to have a loupe to check the collar is secured 😎
1min 40 seconds = ouch! 😂
the way his still hands reacted in silence...
What size is the pin on the end of the removal tool? 0.6mm?
Is it possible to remove the diver extension on the clasp?
This pin-collar system is one big tragedy! I've already lost 3 of these collars and my sumo falled twice from my hand. I'll eventually lose it.
Collar should go in the middle, not at the end...
Great video, but what a pain the ass that system is. I think I'll just replace my bracelet, my hands and fingers are too big to deal with those little collars.
What if you lost the collar? Where can you purchase replacements?
Same. Impossible to track down
Literally think I lost a few and the pins I’ve almost damn bent them sizing my Seiko samurai which is my first ever serious watch purchase, had a terrible watch experience so far and it sucks because of how beautiful the watch is. This system to resize the links is the worst fucking thing I’ve ever had to experience 😭 ITS SO FINICKY ITS HORRID
Collar should be put in the middle join. Not on the end. The middle join has 2 hole sizes. The collar slides in one end and cannot come out the other. The pin the forces it against the smaller hole.
The collar only fits in the end on my sumo, not the middle. I hate the system it does not inspire confidence.
And what a stupid system it is. My samurai has the collar on the mid section, so it blocks itself but you have to put quite a bit of force on the pin. When you remove the pin, same problem, massive friction, pliers needed, I bent the ends of several pins trying to get them out. best to go back and forth circular motion while pulling, put duct tape on sides of links or else prepare for small scratches. The split pin design is no less robust and is much easier to deal with. Never had a split pin fall out even on sub $100 watches, and they click nicely back into place. Too bad seiko can't give us a solid milled clasp and better bracelets for supposed $600 watches, when other brands can do solid stainless and thick solid clasp and links with SII nh35a movement for the cost of their chintzy bracelet alone (i.e. a fraction of the price). I guess its called pricing power.
Just tried to resize my samurai. I literally thought I was going to break the pins so i hope to never touch them again. Agreed the split end pin would be so much easier to work with.
@@xarnoldx10 literally resized my samurai today and I bent some pins and I don’t even think I’ve put them back in the right way as both ends look the same, as well as the collar going in the middle of the link which was driving me nuts! Horrible system for a beautiful watch I hope I never have to resize it ever again. It sucks because this was my first “serious” watch purchase and has ruined my experience so far as I’ve also managed to scratch the bracelet by doing so as the pin was not going in! (A few minor scratches but still they could’ve been avoided entirely 😢)
Is there any way to do this with some house hold items?
I filed down the sharp end of a needle and tapped the pin out with a small hammer. Very easy!
Sir, you would never size a watch for me!
Wu-Blood Kin I agree! 😂😁
I love Seiko but why can't they use a better way? Like screw pins, for example? It would be A PLEASURE sizing a bracelet if those were used instead of this infernal pin and collar system! I sized my SRPD21K1 last week and I have to say it gave me more trouble than any other watch I have worked on before. 😭 Dang those tiny collars!
I bought my first Seiko (sumo) in preparation for what was supposed to be a Grand Seiko next. After getting the Sumo i am 100% I never want any seiko product again. If the $1200 sumo has a bracelet this rubbish I can’t imagine Grand Seiko makes a much better bracelet.
Pin and collar- I hate that system. Lost collars evertime I shortened a bracelet - and there is no way to get collars from a Seiko dealer (in Austria, possibly they are sold in other countries). I never had Problems with pins-only braceletes. Next step is to buy a Seiko bracelet, just for to get collars. Love my bracelets with screws - best System!
I had the same issue even trying to get them from Japan failed as dealers there had very few of them
You can seriously hurt yourself if the point slips. Be careful!
Thanks for sharing!
Why not just use screw in link? Jesus, it took you a minute and a half to take a link out.
alabanzarobert These are the link pins that come fitted on Seiko bracelets
WIAAWatchReviews yes I know. I was not blaming you. This is actually a good demo. I was taking a knock on Seiko for using such a cumbersome system of attaching links. Do you think cost driven?
I'll be honest, I have no idea why! I can't imaging it is cost driven, as they have to make 2 parts rather than just one pin. Maybe in the long term this way is more secure? I'm sure Seiko et al have done plenty of research and have a reason for it...
@@WIAAWatchReviews makes sense.
Total stupid these collars on the bracelets as they are so small it's easy to lose them! Why on earth did Seiko come up with this silly idea! The so-called designers must have been drunk on Sake!
the ongoing disappointment of owning a Seiko
