That's literally how psychics operate, they say things that are vague enough that they'll apply to practically everyone ;P Then they'll keep going with whatever you react to. They'll also make some educated guesses - for instance, Blaire's apartment looks really nice so it's not crazy to assume she likes decorating.
My mom went to some sort of psychic thing recently with a group of colleagues and one of the things the lady said was that her daughter (me) needs to to "be herself and go her own way" or whatever. Which is a fair guess to make, based upon my mother's age she could estimate my age and then assume that most young women my age might struggle with trying to fit in and they might do what others expect of them rather than what they want for themselves. Except I am VERY much someone who has always gone my own way, so when my mom heard that it made her significantly more skeptical towards the psychic because it was so incredibly inaccurate, lol

So once she threw out the line of a deceased parent and you took it, the male guess was easy.
