Welcome to my review of the Great Engravers "Petition Crown" by Thomas Simon from the Royal Mint. These coins are truly stunning and breathtakingly beautiful, with intricate details and fine craftsmanship that reflect the skill of the engraver.
However, as much as I love these coins, I must admit that they come with a hefty price tag that might not be accessible to everyone. Moreover, despite their undeniable beauty, they are not very popular among collectors and have not sold out from the Royal Mint.
Therefore, after careful consideration, I have decided to return these coins for a refund. While I appreciate their exquisite quality, I believe that the value proposition is not favorable, and I would rather invest my money in other collectibles that are more accessible and in demand.
In conclusion, if you are a passionate collector and have the means to afford these coins, then you will undoubtedly enjoy their beauty and rarity. However, if you are looking for a more practical investment or simply want to add a beautiful piece to your collection, then you might want to consider other options.
In this video, we explore the latest release from the Royal Mint - an exquisite collection of silver and gold coins commemorating the iconic "Petition Crown." These are beautiful coins. There’s no way I’ll be sending mine back.
Getting into collectables can be tricky. Best to get those you like… if the market fall under you, at least you enjoyed the coins. Great review BYB 😊✌🏻
I think this set would’ve had legs if they were priced between £300 to £400, personally I think the £560 price tag wrecked whatever chances it had of being a successful selling set.
They’re beautiful looking coins, I did purchase a set for myself, I’m still waiting for it to arrive and I’ll be keeping mine if there are no major issues.
Good video and thanks for sharing your honest thoughts about this set 👍
Its a shame. They are beautiful but the one in the capsule incorrectly would drive me nuts lol
Stunning.
I'd always prefer a faithful restrike to a modernized piece of art. Maria Theresia thalers are doing well also because they didn't change in any essential way in 220+ years. You get a modern MTT and you know it is the same coin that was issued and was in use for all this time. It has some sort of continuity to it.
Personally, my favourite in the great engravers range would be the Gothic design. Might not be as popular as Three Graces or Una & The Lyon, but it's a personal thing. I started taking an interest in the original gothic crowns a while ago and only discovered the Great engravers, err, yesterday 🤭 so my disappointment at this modern return's "sold out" status is rather big. Interesting video, thank you for the insight!
got mine today the edge lettering was half missing had to send them back.
Great review. Don't know if I could spend that much for them though.
I love made for collector proof coins, but only on the after after market when they settle down to bullion, as so many do. This leaves me 10 to 15 years behind, but it's worth the wait. I am a collector with a stacker's attitude. I'm only up to 2002 on my proof sovereigns, but at 2% over spot, I'm not in the red.
I've just taken possession of a 1oz 2022 proof britannia at a shade under £80 inc shipping. A beautiful piece of art, so no regrets.
These 2oz Great Engravers are no comparison with my 10oz Three Graces and 10oz Una and the Lion.
Thanks for your video! Was close to order the 5 oz set…
I love your videos. Please more of them
The presentation is first class.
Very level headed byb 👍 it’s too easy to get carried away in our hobby 😂 but it is a lovely box 😮
On the day of release I ordered the 5 oz silver after an hours thought I telephoned the rm and cancelled I then purchased the 2oz silver two days later I phoned the rm again and cancelled this set
For the same reason as you are sending your set back I noticed they were not selling my only thought is that they were well overpriced and I have looked again and they have still not sold out
I always loved the design this has, I got a 1914 one Florin which has the pretty much the same design and I want to get one of the new 50ps with the design
Yeah I think you made the right choice there ByB.
cool coins but that price kills me too, not worth it , at least to me , that's 10 oz of silver you could of gotten instead .
I like your honest opinions on everything you discuss on this channel mate. Great video as always!
Inane ramblings or not, still far better than the TV
thanks for the video..
Can you do an analysis on the gothic crown and other coins and how they did. Sort of like you did here but a longer one with some historical prices from Ebay or something
I agree, for the size of the coins the text around the edge is too small.
I purchased these having watched your first video, but I’ll keep mine, shame the packaging is soooooo big though. 🙈
Meanwhile the Britannia 2023 has sold out. Came out before this set but the Royal Mint still hasn’t shipped it.
By the way, when you mentioned the engravers name (Thomas Simon) , you spoke of him like if he was a favourite artist. What specifically is it that you like about his work? What qualities do you look for in an engravers work?
Another great video My BYB... Although from my perspective I disagree... As a collector these are stunning coins and will be in my collection and hope that they don't get sold out as then the mintage will be lower in years to come :-) .. I now do not send any for grading as its a rip off.. If it ain't a PF70 its no good. In fact I will snap up as many PF 69s as I can when they appear as they are normally cheaper than raw hahaha
Mine won't go for grading as the whole presentation is superb in itself.
I saw one of those series (silver) coins here in the states on one of the big bullion houses for $1500 per coin. I thought that it was a misprint, it wasn't. Not for me.
Certainly not a fan of large packaging, where do you store them all when most of what you own is boxes? It is getting crazy.
I think they look great except for the side lettering they missed a opportunity to make it edge to edge but I have to love the coin to pay that much for silver I've seen a few statues of dragons and one of brittanya that I'm thinking about getting even with their premium being so much they just look so good
Way over priced.
The screws should be solid silver
They are really nice looking hopefully there's a very low mintage
See I'm only just starting out with coins but as a lover of old video games and as everyone states in the investment coin game states "isn't a quick flippers game" wouldn't the same rules apply in the future with low selling items be it games or coins shoot up in value after a decade or so due to scarcity in the market due to the completists needing to finish there collection
Agree that the coin should have been thinner so that the engraving would be more faithfully reproduced. Obverse & reverse are excellent but edge detailing and truly awful screwed presentation capsules just ruined it for me. Others in the series are good in my opinion.
I tend to read a lot of the comments on your videos , but have to say .. I do so with rolled eyes .. mostly .. 🙄🤭
Almost no modern silver proofs make money.
What about Una and the lion and the three Graces? They’re worth a lot of money.
I will keep mine I'm in for the long haul 10 years they'll be worth £1ooo imo..
Yes, but that £1,000 will probably be less than today's £280 inflated to 2033 currency.
@@meteoman7958 Yes. maybe 5 years for £1000 . I got a feeling about this coin !!
Cool kids club 👍
Thanks for being in the cool kids club
I suppose if no-one buys 'em, and they melt the unsold down, they might be rare. Still, I'd get shot
Any advice on what action I can take on the royal mint not sending a kilo Britannia I purchased over a month ago? They keep delaying an told me they are not required to refund me, I must simply wait until they feel like shipping it.
Supply getting very tight. Should not have been available on website if they can't fulfill order.
@@iwouldnotsayno I ordered Feb 20th when supply seemed to be relatively normal. I received order confirmation, website account does not provide order history, it says it's down and I should call in. Sent email, they said they were doing a check on my account? After further waiting they said at the beginning of last week it will ship in the coming week.. two weeks since then, still no ship confirmation. They say the are not obligated to refund me. This feels like theft.
@@DAIV I had a bad experience ordering directly from the royal mint also. Ordered from Atkinson's bullion and never had a problem ever.
@@DAIV If your talking about bullion or anything else , they do have history for both commemorative and bullion orders .. go to transaction history and the drop down mode .. click purchases .. unless you ordered by phone .. I can't see any issues with website .. but maybe you are from the U.S ? their U.S branch may be the problem .. but UK is fine
@@chrisb.h4605 yes US. I'm less concerned with that, more concerned with why I'm waiting almost a month and a half with no ship confirmation.
Good video thanks. I would have returned too!
I ordered 5 brand new Britannia 1oz coins a few years ago direct from RM. They came very well packaged and mint and onward sent to NGC for expected MS70 grade, as never taken out of the capsule or packaging.
Sent to NGC same day received and returned from grading....MS65! 😢
oooOOooo
I wouldn't keep them either! The coin on the left is just about the ugliest piece of silver I've seen in a while. I'd buy the display box though! 😅😂
Great capsule design! But not a fan of these coins 😉👍
ummm the packaging and VAT you paid on that is far more than the sliver is worth no?
So many bilities in this reviewbility
If you can't send them back you may as well buy all the proof coins they make, do a review and send the ones you didn't really want back
Hm
Lovely coins silly price. Just saying.
Those capsules are terrible.
Not for me
First!!!
I've heard more bad things about the royal mint than I have good 😂 apparently the quality is shocking so I'll never buy from them
how are you allowed to return? there is nothing wrong with quality! it is because of your special connection with the royal mint!?
He said in the video that you can send proof coins back if you don't want them anymore.
proof coins can be returned! It was said in the video!
These items are covered under distance selling regulations and therefore can be returned. Bullion, no - because the price fluctuates based on metal price. These don't fluctuate, so all good to return within your 14 day window! You don't even need a reason!
@@BackyardBullion I’ve actually sent back a 10oz queens beasts completer, but it was due to a huge scratch on the capsule, I asked for a replacement capsule, but the RM wouldn’t, they asked for it back to exchange
im not being mean but get over at i well love to have all the silver you have
