There is a ton of hype around him as the draft approaches, but when you turn on his film and evaluate him, he does not deserve to be in at the very least the top half of the first round. Why is there so much hype around him? And what are these issues that he struggles with on film? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze Michigan’s Quarterback JJ McCarthy as he prepares for the 2024 NFL draft.

The reason JJ is rising is because the offense he ran in college actually translates to the NFL, teams are tired of getting duped by flashy highlights in offenses that don't help you at the next level. Plus the age and upside hes yet to unlock.

Yes. His processing has been brought up and at the end of the day his coaches said he was able to do everything they asked of him. Makes plays under pressure better than most. I think he can be developed into a good QB.
@@Slaqinidk I think he has more upside than people think. Michigans offense really limited him in what he could show case. Passing in a spread offense like the rest of the prospects is a lot easier than playing under center with a stacked box majority of the game. And tbh Michigans passing offense was pretty ass from a playcalling standpoint. Fact is he has the arm, the accuracy, rarely makes mistakes, and seems to be possibly the most coachable out of all the qbs.

McCarthy is what every GM is looking for, unlimited talent, super young, room for growth, smart, great leader, humble, coachable. He’s like a bigger Zack Wilson with all the mobility and arm talent without all the character issues and bad leadership. Depending where he goes will determine whether he’s successful or not. He’s not a savior of a bad team with subpar talent and bad coaching. 👌
JJ said he watched a lot of film and knew that defenseman was prone to turning his head and he saw him turn in that tight throw near the end zone. So I guess he DID know because he studied it.

Incredible completion percentage with average recievers and 1mph off Milton's fastball both say otherwise. He also very fast and throws well on the run.

Okay this clip at 2:00 is really subjective. JJ claimed in a post game interview that he watched a lot of film of Hartford and noticed that when Hartford drops into coverage he always turns and runs with the receiver so he looked him off and then ripped it when he noticed he started running with the receiver so if you believe what JJ is saying there then that is an ELITE level of QB play and clearly you don’t which is fair so then it’s just a throw where he just risked it, it’s really up to whatever you want to believe. Great video btw, you’re clearly not a huge fan but I can respect how you broke it down and I don’t disagree with a lot your takes the only one I disagree with is I believe he has all the tools to be successful.

I've never seen a blogger present so much video showing completions over 20 yeards downfield as exhibits proving the QB is not very good, showing a 20-yd run dodging four defenders as proof "he isn't althletic or an above-average runner", and a 50 yd near TD completion as proof of his "weak arm". I would have thought his radar gun 61 mph toss, only one mph behind Joe Milton, who everybody thinks has a ridiculously strong arm, would have made you pull back from the oft-stated lie that J.J. "has a weak arm", and his triple cone drill time, 5th best among all players invited to the combine, might have convinced you he's just as athletic, if not more so, than Williams or Daniels. Methinks you are trying very, very hard to get J.J. to drop down to where your NFL fave team can snap him up on draft day.
McCarthy also played travel hockey and high level lacrosse. Only a dummy would try to question his athleticism.

Worse. He's taking plays that we're successful and trying to explain why they're actually bad. He totally loses the plot when he says McCarthy "definitely doesn't have the arm strength" while showing him throwing a 40+ yard completion under pressure. That false narrative comes completely apart when you go look at the combine results and see that he threw at 61 mph, which by the way is just 1 mph under the record set by Josh Allen. But ya, he's a noodle-arm.
Then you look at this guy's other videos and he's "completely out" on Penix. Is there a QB in this draft that he actually likes? In any draft??? Dude's just tearing down these kids for his own attention.

But then again, we live in polarizing online world.. gone are the days of expecting anyone to to accurately represent an issue.. and anything will be made into an issue... So the onus is on viewers to find each side of an issue and weigh the best arguments, and also to turn down the amplifier on "issues"

JJ McCarthy definitely needs to sit a year, but it is a fantastic sign that he is very good when blitzed. Hopefully, he goes to a team like the Steelers where he can sit behind a vet and understand the game better when he is a sophomore.
I disagree. JJ’s flaws require reps in the nfl not sitting. If his problems were mechanics/accuracy I’d agree but those look very solid he just needs to play quarterback more

4 minutes in you show tape of the tight window throw against Ohio State as his number one receiver flashes across the back side of a freshman safety and call it a bad read. He then makes the correct call to not choose to throw to his covered Tight End who was covered by the #1 safety out of high scool in 2022. Your scouting is making a lot of assumptions on what McCarthy did and did not see, and also completely ignoring the personel and match up differences on the two plays.
I'm a retired scout... It's obvious he hand picked plays to pick the kid apart... What he failed to do is show how the kid always makes big plays, in big moments when it counts. The kid won 3 big 10 championships and a natty with his best wr being a 3rd round pick and his best olineman will go in the 4th round. The rest will be lucky to go in the 7th... When grading a QB you have to base it on who he was playing with... This kid has the ability to make ridiculous throws off platform, while on the move..... He is very smart.... Every year I see the media hyped guys get in to the league and fail... You can't coach the way JJ drops those dimes in to tight windows while on the move and off platform. Not just dink and dunk stuff either. Deep balls as well... I'm just going to say it: JJ will prove to be the best QB in this class... My God he's only a Jr and is nowhere close to reaching his ceiling... Look where the best to ever do it were drafted and who was drafted ahead of them... I digress...The media controls the draft... Too many times, GM's don't listen to the scouts. They base it on media hype. Why? The primary objective is to put fans in the stands and sell merch... Flash sells tickets... The guy's evaluation is missing Key aspects of certain plays,..
JJ said that OSU’s safety would always turn his head in that coverage from his film study in an interview after the game. He got tricked the second time when they switched coverages but still made a play. Also, OSU has a better defense than any of the other QBs played and he has consistently played tougher defenses than any of the other QBs, and it’s not close.
Penn State (he might have been injured), Ohio State, Iowa, and BAMA all in a row. Penn State was a run game, so take that out and he still faced 3 top-15 defenses in a row. He makes winning plays. GMs think that’s a QB-trait as well. He’s a 1st round pick

@@dkoda840 Both QBs had ton of ints in their first years but thanks to having great coaching and structure they were able to develop into good QBs... There are lots of teams in todays NFL that would have limited their offense and basically neutered their positive traits before then deciding QBs who throw a ton of ints aren't worth it.
PS: IMO teams should always draft qbs for talent and traits never silly college stats or media opinions. Look at how often the best QB in the draft wasn't taken first because according to stats and the media "he's not worth a first round pick or the number 1 overall pick".

Zach Wilson is a BUST for one trait of every pro QB needs, the ability to have no fear when delivering throwing motions of knowing the hit is coming. Wilson has much FEAR in NFL of throwing the ball away to avoid getting hit in the most vulnerable position of the RELEASE of the throwing motion ( this hit is reason many young QBs fail in NFL ) as long as McCarthy have courage and enthusiasm of such moments that make or break a NFL QB, he will go far in NFL.
Wilson also didn't have the eyes to play dink and dunk when the defense was wiling to give up the underneath stuff. Only recent prospect that combined the audacity to grip it and rip it when he saw his receiver to win his rep and improve the ball placement was CJ Stroud. And his Texans film even to week 8 showed a lot of that all while his O-line was struggling to stay healthy.
JJ was a hockey player. He's not afraid of contact.
This is only a small part of the NFL Film Study. If you did the full film study - You would know that JJ McCarthy has more skills that could translate to the NFL Level than any other QB in this draft class. One example is his leadership skiil. (Which is by far 2nd to none) It gets results by motivating and bringing out the best in players. QBs like that can bring out the best in an offense.

I'm sorry, but it's pretty stupid to show ultra-accurate touchdown throws and improvised rollout-left throws for 1st downs into the red zone as examples of McCarthy doing the "wrong" thing. This is just empty hyperanalysis.
My biggest issue watching JJs film was the leverage misunderstanding. It felt like he misread body language of defenders more than anyone talked about at the top of the draft. But then I heard top 10 and top 5 and I was like?? This guy does NOT have those big time tools to overcome that. He may develop into a starting qb but this idea that he’s dripping with big time traits is such a myth
One counterpoint JJ defenders will have in their back pocket is his youth. He’s not a finished product. He’s still so damn young and theoretically can have these tough edges polished up. He has some things in his game that are difficult to teach - if he goes to the right spot, he could reach a pretty high ceiling

@@isaacs3822 Its more like the QB that bad teams want picking in the top 5~10 are not finished products, but have traits that help give them a high floor in NFL. Hell Mac Jones was picked 15th and seemed like a great high floor value QB. But his skillset required better talent around him to play his game and when shit hit the fan, he didn't have great mobility or other traits to fall back on. Dude peaked by his rookie year and in a league where top 10 QBs are great athletes with an arm and some high form of being able to read coverages, Mac proved he's just a journeyman or bridge QB to some team looking to find their franchise QB.

Interesting take, agree that all these bad habits did happen in those games, but out of all the games he’s played, you are showing 4 ? There’s a counter to those highlights in the other 20+ games he was in over 2 years. Analysis over such a small sample size is incomplete, but he’s got something. Joe Klatt is the only analysts who saw him live the most, he probably has the best take on JJM.

Would've loved to see JJ come back for one more year because he's so young and Michigan could've put a lot on his plate to prepare him even further for the NFL. But the offense is going to take a big dip this year, so leaving now is probably the right move. The thing that stands out to me about JJ is his ability to make the right plays to win games. Scrambles. Completions on 3rd and 4th down (check his completion stats on 3rd down, his completion stats under pressure). Yeah, he doesn't take that many downfield shots... I think that is more winning football (and coaching) than it is ability. And anyone who says he doesn't have elite arm strength is a fool.
Yea. An athletic 6’3” 220 lb qb with a rocket arm, excellent athleticism reads defenses to get his team into the best play because he doesn’t care who gets the credit. Those guys fail in the NFL. And did you really say the OSU throw to Wilson as a negative? McCarthy literally said he watched film and that player had a tendency to turn his back on the QB to cover the cross. Can’t push the ball downfield? Analysis is null and void after that.
Good Luck telling this to the Viking Fan Base. Kwesi is going to get the dammed if I do dammed if I don't treatment. Two of our top media guys recently said McCarthy is a better fit for the Vikings than Daniels. You can't make that stuff up. 🤣

That’s not accuracy. That’s completion. A receiver catches a go route behind him but that same receiver catches another one in Stride. That’s the problem, where is the ball landing because both those throws count as a completion but one is accurate and one isn’t. Cj stroud had a 67 percent completion percentage in college but would you consider JJ more accurate since he has a better completion percentage? No. How many times did he throw, what routes was he throwing to, how does he protect the receiver with his balls, all these have to factor in evaluation.

What I think is not being talked about enough with McCarthy is the positions he was often put in. Michigan is a ground based offense. While other QBs get short check downs and easy timing throws to build a rhythm, Michigan often runs it on first and second down and then relies on McCarthy to make big time plays on third and medium/long. Despite him not being able to build much of a rhythm throughout the game, he still is able to fit the ball in tight windows and make big time plays even in adverse down and distance scenarios. I also think he was coached to play conservatively due to how good the Wolverines defense was. Not saying he's a perfect prospect, but I think taking his offense into context is an important part of the evaluation.

Yikes 😅 Some mocks have him going top 10 in the Draft. I have seen JJ go to a team like Denver to be their savior, and then even trading up to get him. This sort of stuff gets people fired.

JJ was talking to the media early the week after the OSU game. And he was asked to talk about the TD verse robber. He said that they new from tape that 1) the robber can be moved by the QBs eyes, and 2) always turned his head like he did here. So, JJ briefly looked to the right to pull him out of the robber zone just enough to have a window and threw it knowing the safety wouldnt ever get eyes on the ball.
Since JJ was always very open with the media and would acknowledge when he made mistakes, got lucky or would like to have a decision back, i think that play is actually one of his better reps of his career.

Oh that was cathartic. I thought I was taking crazy pills with the film people were sharing that was supposed to be positive just being wildly unimpressive.
I get that he’s coming out in a year where there are 6+ teams that need a QB and next year looks like a barren wasteland at the position but this “He might go as early as 3” thing thats been floating around has been driving me insane.

He has a lot of upside. He played in a system that didn’t show case him. The rest of the qbs in the draft all played against soft defenses minus Daniels and in a spread offense where it is easy to throw the ball and get crazy numbers. Playing under center in a stacked box is a lot harder. I honestly think he might turn out to be one of the better qbs out of this class because he’ll get drafted to probably the best team since he isn’t gonna be top 5. If you put any of the other top qbs in the Michigan system they wouldn’t have looked any better, if not worse 🤷♂️

Add that onto the fact that a lot of his tape is underwhelming, how can you even begin to say that he has a lot of upside? Your comment at the end of your analysis about his TD to Wilson against OSU was hilarious. It was his film study that allowed him to make that throw because he knew the defender was going to do that 😂 he talked about it in his postgame interview. Also he doesn’t move that well? His 3 cone drill was super elite. He was 5th or 6th best among all players at the combine. It’s funny how you make a video about him, and you’re just objectively wrong about his abilities 😂 lack of arm strength? He threw 61 mph 😂 also elite

He has a 70% completion percentage in an offense where all the other recent qbs Joe Milton, Shea Patterson and Cade Mcnamera were at 50-60%. He was a 5 star out of HS, won 27 of 28 starts in college, had crazy good efficiency numbers, was 20 years old last season. And I mean a few of those bad processing examples weren’t clear winner plays, receivers didn’t come open or he has pressure coming quick.
I saw someone say that JJ is rising exactly because he’s not an obvious pick-every scout wants to pick him because if he works out then that is a career-defining scouting/drafting decision for them, whereas picking a more “obvious” quarterback is less impressive. And, if they don’t work out, you won’t be there to deal with the consequences anyway!
What really, do scouts get promotions or something when a prospect works out in the NFL???
@@mitchweber7868rarely, but it does happen from time to time. Veach is a notable one. He spent over a decade on Reid's staff in various front office roles. His last one before his promotion to GM was KC's scout in the Southeast. He badgered Reid and Dorsey to draft Mahomes, but he also worked numerous positions previously, had a great relationship with Reid, communicates with the players, etc. All things Dorsey was terrible at. Like any job, it's really all about how successful and ambitious you are.

@@mitchweber7868 scouts are the bottom of the totem pole in the organization. They cover different regions and work their way up if they're successful. The head of the scouting department looks at all the regions. The GM looks at every prospect, handles trades, contracts, has final say in the draft, etc.

Kirk cousins. That is what I see a way younger kirk cousins. Not that impressive, but not bad. Needs a team around him and be that field general that can read the defense and get the ball to his guy. Probably still needs a couple years to develop with a veteran qb to develop his accuracy and ability to read nfl defenses

It's funny but I've seen videos and heard reasons why teams should not draft any of the QBs, I've also heard "his arm isn't great" about them all too. The coaches willhave a good idea what they can and can't develop... Just have too have good coaches, who make good choices

As a QB who threw for 10,000 YDS & 76 TDs 111 TTDs in HS & unfortunately I didnt have my real growth spurt physically or mentallly until I was 20 & had quit football. But I did walk-on to a D1 team with a starting QB Ben Roethlisberger a QB I knew from my SO year as I played 1 of the best games of my life with 400 YDs & 5 TDs and still lost by 20 his SR year in the playoffs. My younger Uncle was ESPN 300 #1 FB. We shared a front cover w AJ Hawk & Marcus Freeman but went to rival HS. Me and him did attend a lot of summer camps together. I personally went to FL-Spurrier QB Camp, Joe Tiller Purdue Passing Camp, Boomer Esiason QB Camp & FB camps at Mich St-Saban, Tenn, Pitt, WV, Cincy, Bowling Green(Urban Meyer) being the only D1 school recruiting me but he left for Utah. I competed in 7 v 7 vs over a 100 ESPN 300 recruits from 02-04.My older Cousin startrd his final 2 years at Stanford at S thats my Dads side. My moms side was my 2nd cousin who was a AA LB at Wisconsin and played for the 49ers before retiring infamously for CTC reasons. All of us from Dayton, OH. Ive also gone on to play competitive 7 v 7 playing the best teams from all over Florida for 5 years in a row and have worked in the betting industry as a handicapper. This is 1 of the most bias misleading videos Ive seen in the last couple drafts. I will play you Josh Allens tape at Wyoming or Burrow at LSU in 2018 where he was already older than JJ is now. Go watch Lamar Jackson in the bowl game. Go watch Jayden Daniels or Caleb Williams in a college offense you can pick those guys apart in college schemes. JJ is special I promise you in a NFL offense hes literally better than Brock Purdy who ran a similiar offense at everything literally everything. There is a reason why JJ in a possible historic QB draft hes shooting up draft boards. Its not like 2013 where teams are reaching for bad QBs.

@@CentseiSamI'm somewhat partial since I'm very close to the players and the football program in general. You can find JJ from South quad almost every day. He exudes that alpha QB confidence that you can't teach. He's not cocky, just confident. He's very polite, the kind of young man you'd want your daughter to marry.
I feel JJ will do just fine in the NFL, but again I'm biased, a die hard wolverine since late 80s.

When you meet this young man, you'll understand why his value is skyrocketing. He possesses intangible qualities that can't be taught. You feel his alpha energy from 100 feet away. People just gravitate toward him and he doesn't even talk much. Never seen anything like that. I've been around Wolverines forever. He will be successful in football and in life.

I been saying this all. He isn’t a guy who will change the destiny of a team that needs him to be average or above average at 2 min drill,end of half, 3rd and 7 plus, situations where you need to “go get points” EI the other team scored back to back drives.
And I am a Michigan fan… been watching UM back when Bo was the coach with Tony Boles and Leroy Hord running the rock.
When pro McCarthy views are expressed it is all about 27-1 record and being a winner. His team was 27-1 and that team isn’t walking into your locker room for training camp. I could say that about Tommy Frazier and Tony Rice.
When the conversation shifts to a break down of skill sets and abilities this video break down is fairly close to what I see.
This imho is one of the most overrated QB prospects in a decade of drafting… I don’t believe he has the Nuanced instinct skill sets to be a high level or even average starter. And will likely get his coach and GM fired. Especially if the Vikings trade up to get him… imagine them trading Justin Jefferson for him.

Honestly not the first time a QB has been hot shotted as a top 15 prospect in the pre draft and then teams ultimately change their tune when draft day comes. Its less about JJs overall perceived value on the consensus board rather than which team has him very high in their draft board. Which is exactly how Kenny Pickett's story played out. Steelers thought they got a value pick for him who is a good 'fit' for the team offense (LOL with Matt Canada calling the offense). Before everyone knew it he was shipped to the Eagles for a day 3 pick. There is also Will Levis' story where he fell all the way down to a day 2 pick. But the Titans overhauled their staff and offense so Levis still has a shot to be the Titans starter with a 2nd contract ready for him.
He has also never been asked to carry his team like Williams , Daniels , Penix and even Drake Maye. I’m not saying he can’t do it but there is very little evidence that he can

He is a second round pick to me. Good arm talent, good athleticism, but so much of his evaluation is a gigantic projection of things he very very rarely proved he could do in college. Michigan did a great job putting him in advantageous game scripts, but someone who averaged less than 200 passing yards a game going top 5 is kind of insane any way you slice It. I think a lot of his reads over the middle of the field were pre-determined and he was inaccurate throwing outside the numbers a lot. I think he could be a solid NFL qb in some circumstances but I see a lot more bust potential than star potential.

Before watching the video to see if Alex is high or low on JJ, I'll just say that I'm higher on him than Bo Nix or Penix. Both of these dudes seem maxed out to me. There's very little left of the orange to be squeezed. What you see is what you get. JJ is my 4th qb in the draft.
Lowkey Spencer Rattler is a dark horse candidate of mine to be a good QB in the league.
Edit: Daniels is technically my third qb but he’s my boom or bust prospect. His Sack percentage scares me way too much but he has some special qualities to him. I can equally see him being good or also flaming out.

So u pick the very few passes where he was very slightly off to say he isn't accurate. But his school record 72.3% completion would say otherwise.
At 2:35 JJ said himself that the reason he threw that ball was because when he studied film, he knew that the safety has a tendency to not look backwards toward the ball when it’s released.

We also need to remember how he was coaches. The stuff you said coaches hate is what Harbaugh was instilling in him. Be safe, least thats what the vibe came off watching it unfold. So the things that would get a qb benched is what kept him as the starter for Harbaugh lol that and his ability. We will see how his nfl development goes

The reason he seems so raw sometimes is he didn't get the volume of throws that college quarterbacks are usually getting nowadays.
At 6:32 it looks like the corner covering the outside receiver bites on the throw. Man, if JJ pump fakes to receiver he threw to he’d have an open GO right down the sideline for an easy TD. So I think you are right that J.J. throws out when the receiver properly settles but the DBs screwed up too on this play. And in reality I think that corner really gambled by doubling the receiver who J.J. threw to becsuse that DB seemed to forget his responsibility.

Considering the clips that you showed to say why he wasn't good for literal highlight plays, I think JJ will be fine. He's only 21 and only going to get better especially if someone like KOC gets his hands on him. He may have his issues now but he's not going to the the same player he is now compared to when he's like 25
