- The player's goal is simply to find the enchanted chalice and return it to the gold castle. The player character, represented by a square, explores a multi-screen landscape containing castles, mazes, and various rooms. Hidden throughout the world are a sword, keys to unlock each of the three castles (gold, black, and white), a magic bridge which allows the player to travel through a wall, and a magnet which will pull any of these objects toward it.
Roaming the world are three dragons:
Yorgle, the yellow dragon: He is afraid of the golden key and will run away from it. He guards the chalice when he can find it; otherwise he wanders around or helps the other dragons guard their possessions.
Grundle, the green dragon: He guards the magnet, the bridge, the black key, and the chalice.
Rhindle, the red dragon: He is the fastest of the three and the most aggressive. He guards the white key and chalice.
Here the player (top right) is carrying the Sword, and Rhindle (middle) is guarding the chalice (left).
A dragon can be "killed" by touching it with the sword. If the console's right difficulty switch is in the "A" position, the dragons will run away when they see the sword.
When a dragon touches the player, it will "strike" (remaining motionless for a moment with its mouth open, waiting for a shorter time if the console's left difficulty switch is in the "A" position) and then "swallow" the player, who becomes trapped in the dragon's belly. While the dragon's mouth is opened, it cannot be killed.
A black bat flies around randomly, occasionally picking up or dropping objects (including live or dead dragons). The bat can steal the player's sword and give him a live dragon in return, or vice-versa. The player can catch the bat and carry it around. The bat continues to fly even after the player has been killed, and occasionally the bat will pick up the dragon whose stomach contains the player, giving the player a whirlwind tour of the Adventure universe. The player can trap the bat inside a castle; this works best with the gold castle, since it has only one room and (provided the player has emptied it beforehand) the bat will, if it is flying upwards (straight up or diagonally up-right or up-left), fly around endlessly in the room and will not leave the castle. If the player enters with another item, the bat will change direction to grab the new item and usually end up leaving the castle. The bat's name was intended to be Knubberrub, but that name never made it into the manual.[7]
There are three different games available via the Game Select switch:
Game 1 is a simplified version of the game and does not have the red dragon, the bat, the catacombs, the white castle, or the maze inside the black castle.
Game 2 is the full version, having all the features described. The location of the objects at the start of a new game is always the same and because of this known initial state, this is the easiest game to use to find the Easter egg.
Game 3 is just like Game 2; however, the initial locations of the objects are pseudo-randomized, providing a different game each time. Because of this, the game could be easier or harder to solve (occasionally impossible, due to a bug in the item-placement routine that sometimes locks the gold key inside the gold castle). Due to the unpredictable placement of the items, it is more difficult to secure the bat and locate the items needed to find the Easter egg (though the location of the dot is consistent).
When a player is eaten by a dragon, he does not necessarily have to start over. Hitting the "Game Reset" switch resurrects the player back at the gold castle and resurrects any killed dragons; however, the objects all remain where they were at the time of the player's death. This could be thought of as one of the earliest usages of the "continue game" feature, which is now prevalent in most video games. Hitting "Game Select" after death returns the game to the game select screen and an entirely new game can be played. - Hry

Actually after a playthrough or two, you kind of figure out these things on your own. It's not as complicated as you might think.
I remember playing this on a TV plug-in Atari emulator as a kid. It pains me to look back on it and realize that I never even beat the first level. For some reason, this game scared the shit out of childhood me.

I played this when I was 3 yo. Everytime I saw that duck, I would drop the controller and run in the other room. I cant believe I found this after 28 years and people had the same experience.

You can see that the frame rate drops a bit when the high res dragons are on the screen. I played this to death when I was a kid.
Ah..there were only so many sprites this system could display on the screen at one time...the developers solution? Flash them alternately rapidly so even though that one or the other is only on the screen at one instant in time, flashing them really fast gave the illusion they were both on the screen at the same time. Late 70s programming fix.

Brilliant game for its time, actually did create an atmosphere and had a smooth, fluid feel. Bat was annoying and amusing, the dragons were great, nice game!

I'm sure an average modern day gamer would say that this game looks like absolute crap, but I think we should all appreciate what this game had for us when it was released. Also, from what I recall this is the first video game EVER to include an easter egg!
Even as a little kid I loved this game, the fact that you had to kill or evade Dragons was my favorite part and in some ways it helped develop a love for RPGs. And it was funny when a Dragon ate you, the stress of running away from the black Dragon was real lol

I was born in '95 but all we had to play until 2002 was Atari 2600. This was my favorite game out of the bunch.

The simplicity of this game is so weirdly satisfying!... the sounds jump- scared me and the over-all level seemed entertaining... might've had a blast if I had tried this 10 years ago lol

In 1977 in 4th grade I saw Star Wars and also got an Atari. I believe adventure came out a year later. I know how to enter the secret room with the easter egg developers signature!

If I remember correctly this might have been the first game I ever played and I was born in 2001. I definitely remember playing this and pong with my mom. It's strange and even scary to think about how fast technology advanced and is continuing to advance. It's on an exponential scale

Yep, Level One is a breeze. No catacombs, no bat, and no Rhindle. Slay the other two, open the Black Castle, grab the chalice, and your quest is done.

I loved this game
so, i just played this on IGN for the first time just now....ive never played an atari game and i didnt read the instructions (because i figured 'i can figure this out'). i found the black key, then the maze, then the black castle....then went back to get the key because i had left it haha ....then i found the chalice and returned it. i didnt know if i won or died. 0_o i had to come here and find out.

Just looking at level 1 makes me want to play it myself. And I don’t even have an Atari.
This one is pretty simple. I would like to see the player playing the third level, where there was another dragon, painted red and the bat, flying with anything. I remember at the beginning of level 2, if you were not fast, he took the yellow key of the castle and fly away, and you had to have something else (a dragon, a sword or even the bridge) to exchange with him. The problem was when I was the dragon took the cup away and left the dragon to eat you.
Adventure was my favorite game as a child. Seems silly to look at now but it was the gameplay. Something no software company even takes into account now. As humans we move on all the time. Gameplay has not reflected this. Someone somewhere must have an idea to innovate and wow us with something special. Where are you ??? !

The bat wasn't in this level. Yeah, the bat could be a problem, but that was part of the game.
