With Halo Infinite coming out, I thought it'd be worth going back into the series history and pulling one of its most iconic vehicles into the real world: the Ghost. Turns out, building an all-metal, jet powered hovercraft (with no straight lines anywhere on it) is hard. Still, it ended up working great! (Mostly)
I based the looks of this off the Ghost in Halo 3 and Halo 2 Anniversary, mostly. It has some influences from Halo Reach too. Halo Infinite has red Ghosts! But that's just too much.
Huge thanks to Dan, Justin and Julian for helping to make this project a reality!

only thing worst to steer is the warthog. no idea why they thought it'd be a good idea to add a timed section requiring precise maneuvers to get through with only a warthog to get you there. I had to retry that damn mission 7 times to beat it.
@@Sparrow_Bloodhunter I never had a problem with the warthog in any of the games on console ngl, PC was a bit trickier but you can get the hang of it (unless you're playing infinite). Rack up 25 kills in blood gulch slayer by doing donuts around the bases and spawnkilling a bunch of people back when I was an honorless brat.
@@Sparrow_Bloodhunter The Warthog actually has some of my favorite handling in any vehicle of any game. Apparently the ghost was notoriously difficult to drive in-lore too, so you've got even more accuracy!
yeah, playing CE i see no reason to complain about its steering
What you say isn’t really correct. As long as the ground suits the vehicle it’s very maneuverable. “Despite its apparent simplicity and grace, the Ghost requires a skilled driver to handle it properly. Uneven or broken terrain makes the Ghost extremely difficult to pilot.” -Halopedia
@@PackHunter117 how does this go against what I said? "the ghost requires a skilled driver to handle it properly"
@@casualbird7671 idk some people like to act like they’re adding something to the conversation when they’re not, it’s really annoying.
@@casualbird7671 Because it mostly depends on the environment if it’s difficult to drive or not. If it’s a big flat open area then the Ghost will handle really well. It can even glide over shallow water ofcourse.

A lawnmower with some jets tapped to it
You make designing and building a hovercraft powered by jet engines sound easy! Seriously though, I wouldn’t mind longer more in depth videos at all, or even a multi part series. Also, do you have a patreon or something similar? How can I throw dollars of appreciation at you?!
It's always a toss up between including more details for the more serious audience, vs just keeping it high level for the majority. One day I hope to start uploading companion videos for each project that go into the more technical content.
No Patreon currently, but I've been considering it... I just don't know if I want to take money from viewers while the sponsorships are already covering me well enough.
Thanks though!
@@Built_IRL Honestly, the finnicky nature of handling it just makes it seem even more like a ghost, what with how they tend to take a second or two to come to a complete stop. If the Halo games supported vehicles rotating outside of the players' control, I have no doubt ghosts would have been given a similar tendency towards spinning out.
@@Built_IRL I mean, it's their choice whether to give you money or not and it's not like you're forcing people to give money. So, having a Patreon account is worth it I believe.

@@AmanStudios Looks good! You did the visuals well.
Adding longer travel on the spring could help, but there'll always be a limit there. And unfortunately, grappling hooks are just really hard. There's a reason it's taken me as much development time as it has to get what I consider acceptable performance - if it was as simple as 3d printing something, everyone would have done it already. Good luck with it though!
@@Built_IRL Thanks for actually responding man! I was just wondering if there would be a way to make your self latching grappling hook shown in the hacksmith's webshooter video, but on a much smaller scale, as with a spring system it cannot launch such a heavy projectile. Good luck on your webshooter also!

Even though the sound isn't the same, it still sounds cool and didn't sound like a lawnmower at all imo
where did you go?
It's people like this that truly change the world.
I think that thrust vectoring on the jet engines might be a good way to get faster steering response. Or you could use electric drone motors or EDFs, which would be quieter too.
I miss imagined what you said and ended up with multiple drones tied to the left and right side attempting to steer the vehicle by pulling left or right.
@@Xyzair gmod be like
But for thrust vectoring, you need the engines further back from the CG. I think in this case, if you wanted to keep the jets positioned as they are, you could wire both jets on the same throttle, but have some clamshell doors partially cover the exhaust on one side to turn. The mechanical blockage would be more responsive, without the spool down/spool up delay of the jet.
"Thrust vectoring"
My south african man out here casually recreating Sukhoi 4.5th generation thrust nozzles.
@@stevemc6010 tbf it is a land vehicle and not a fighter jet, so they dont have to be perfect. also they'd only have to work in two directions, as opposed to sukhois omni-directional nozzles

No hablo ingles pero te escribo para decirte la mucha suerte que tuviste que fuera una herida menor confio te recuperes y no te excedas trabajando eres un genio al recrear esto
Great build!
For mk II you may want to consider separate throttle and steering. Have mechanical steering that utilizes thrust vectoring and let the throttle be more or less constant. With the right thrust vectoring configuration you could even have a thrust reverser for braking.
That was actually in the original plan, before I decided to simplify it haha. I may have to bring it back now though!

@@prateekpanwar646 HALO 2 BAYBEEEE (the UNSC frigate)😉
Yooo this came out great!! Rarely see fictional vehicles get made IRL (and actually function), especially ones as unique as the Ghost. Though now I'm curious - obviously we're far off from inventing an "anti-gravity drive" but how close could a hovercraft of this size get to the speed and handling of what's seen in game?
The speed, we could definitely get - even this one should be able to go pretty fast.
The handling, though, that's a lot harder. Hovercrafts just aren't very easy to manoeuvre, no matter what you try. Still, I won't say it's impossible!
You should continue to develop this and make it even better and more accurate!
Hearing how many hours you spent on this deserved a like. I love the build. Keep up the great work.
I really love how unlike most "lets make cool stuff" youtube channels, you really make something functional, and not just something that looks good for a thumbnail
Love how if you had a 8-10ft Chief or Sangheili riding it the scale would look about right on top of the functionality!
all of this and it's still under 1 million views? that's a crime.
Integrating the sponsorship with instructions on building a hovercraft was a stroke of genius - makes it so much more palatable.
Glad it worked for you, thanks for the feedback!
I think instead of toggling the jet engines, maybe add some way to vector the thrust
That’s actually so cool

I need more version of this (and better if is possible!). This is amazing job.
Hope everything's ok bro, haven't seen any vids on your channel for a while, stay safe 🙂❤️
That looks like a super fun project! Maybe some rudder-type parts behind the jets would make the turning more manageable, instead of just using differential thrust? Thank you so much for the great video, i really enjoyed watching it! 💜🧡
Cheers! I mean first prize would be to add a whole tail and vertical stabiliser at the back , but that wouldn't look very authentic haha
@@Built_IRL If you paint it clear like you did with the skirt, nobody will see it!
@@Built_IRL cut down a small sail and wear it on your back like the flags brutes would sometimes wear and you have your rudder without breaking the immersion haha
@@Built_IRL put a hole in the back center with a fin, duct some air from the main fan down a center tunnel. Or use a second motor to generate movement thrust rather than the small jet engines and ducting to direct the thrust where its needed.

This is honestly very cool! Probably worth a revisit in the future! A minor feedback on the vid, though: the hairblower hovercraft tutorial spliced into the Kiwi Co. ad is something of a mental gymnastics to comprehend.
Thanks for the feedback. I actually agree, but I thought it was worth experimenting with. I'll do it a bit differently next time!
@@Built_IRL Thanks for replying! It probably comes down to the format Kiwi Co. gave you to represent their product, otherwise the tutorial can be used as a good segue to the company!
RE: how the ghost handles
It seems like you might want a “fly by wire” solution to be able to translate user input into more acceptable handling. I’m assuming there wasn’t any code written by the creator… Which is an assumption! If I am right, my follow up questions would be “have you ever programmed an arduino before,” “what’s the mix and max (acceptable) output of each jet,” and then it would be a matter of finding a good graph/math equation.
Honestly, if I had access to this build to measure stuff I think it would be fun to tweak code in unity to get the best ‘fly by wire’ system for this particular build.
Represent South Africa!! Welldone, amazing video. Good quality both in the build itself and the production of the video. Keep it up
