@@itskendallrose you’re welcome! I’m actually going to Japan this month, if you’d ever like to meet! If not I understand!!

Enjoyable as always, much better than many of the others out there that continue to flog Tokyo and Osaka. Nice to see something different and by the way my sister who like me is an aussie, she's smarter and speaks Italian, German and Japanese told me your Japanese pronunciation is better than most.

Hello Kendal! I’ll be a student at Nanzan this summer and will be living with a host family for the first time. I’m so excited!! Do you have any advice for new students and first time host family students?

Oooh I’m so excited for you! My biggest tip is don’t be afraid to talk to your host family! If you’re currently learning Japanese, they won’t expect you to be perfect and will hopefully be willing to slow down or explain things as needed. And also be prepared to commute if you live far from the school. I spend about 2.5 hours per day commuting, and it’s pretty tough. But I’ve never regretted living with my host family! I wish you the best of luck!

@@itskendallrose thank you Kendal! This is very helpful. Do you have any gift ideas for a Japanese host family with small children? I would love to give them a gift upon arrival but am unsure what suits Japanese tastes! Also, do you have any favorite classes that you have taken at Nanzan so far?

@@amphibiany Your host family has small children? How exciting! 🥺 My host family doesn’t have young children, but when giving a gift in Japan, a nice food item (chocolates, fancy nuts, etc) is always a good bet! Or something related to your country/region is also great! I gave my host family a nice platter of dried fruit on a board that folded into a cute fruit bowl when they were done eating the fruit. If the kids are super young, a small toy could also be nice!!
I think one cool thing about Nanzan is the Japanese arts classes- odori, ikebana (flower arrangement), tea ceremony, manga drawing, shodou (calligraphy). I took shodou and it was really cool! Harder than it looks, but fun and relaxing!
