    Great guide. We (on a very last minute whim) left Salzburg early in the morning on Bus 150 to Bad Ischl. Then took the train - which like you say - puts you on the wrong side of the lake. HOWEVER - seeing Hallstatt from the ferry for the first time is MAGICAL. So magical that I would recommend the ferry over taking the bus. It also drops you in the center of town and there is a discount on a round trip ferry ticket. We dined at the restaurant shown at 6:52. Magical. Words cannot describe the beauty of this town. It must be seen in person. (Did I mention it was magical?) This is a very helpful guide and would have come in handy. But I will say that the trip is relatively intuitive. Also - take the time to stop and have a walk through Bad Ischl. It's a charming little town.

    Thanks for all the information. It is really very clear. I visited Hallstatt last year, but I was travelling using a rented car. It was a very disappointing trip, as I cannot find any parking space, as the town was really crowded, and I just had to continue my journey to Munich. I will use public transport for my next trip. Driving was really stressful, as I am from Malaysia, and drive on the opposite side of the road.

I know you said you don't recommend it but only way i can do it is a stop between salzburg and Vienna. I'm planning on taking the first bus out and probably leave by mid afernoon to continue to Vienna, I know it will be hurried and exhausting probably, but I know it's going to be totally worth it!

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Před 4 měsíci

      very good question. The main issue on doing Hallstatt as while traveing between Salzburg and Vienna is the time wasted in transit, which will also have your luggage in tow. here is my hypothetical recomendation if you are doing say three days in Salzburg and ended in Vienna by the end of day four.
      Current Plan:
      Day 1 - Salzburg
      Day 2 - Salzburg
      Day 3 - Salzburg
      Day 4 - Hallstatt on the way to Vienna (huge travel time with luggage)
      Suggested Plan:
      Day 1 - Salzburg
      Day 2 - Salzburg
      Day 3 - Hallstatt as a day trip (less travel time, no luggage)
      Day 4 - Salzburg (stash luggage at hotel while taking in last of Salzburg for the day, leave for Vienna in even on a two hour direct high-speed train)

    Hello dude!, I follow this video step by step and it is very help full, I just went to Hallstat about two weeks ago and the way is almost the same, just at the return in the Attnangt Putchheim the line I took was the 3 platform. And the ferry to the train station depart at the back of the Town Church. Thank you very much and I recommend this place as one of the most beautiful places un Austria.

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Před 4 lety +1

      glad you found your train with no issues, i've only had the platform be different once since they redid the station which was due to line construction. Your comment is a helpful reminder that visitors should always check both their ticket but also the departure boards at each station for any changes. Yep the ferry dock behind the lower Town Church (aka the Protestant Church) to the train station via the Stephanie Ferry is Hallstatt Markt which I show and mention in this video. It can be confusing as there is Hallstatt Markt (ferry dock) and the Marktplatz which is the main square.

      While the cable car does have quite a climb up, I would agree that the stroll to the Ice Cave is more of a nice 15-20 minute uphill walk than a climb, but we have seen some people that try to rush have to take breaks halfway up. Definitely the more time you spend in Austria the hike seems almost like a hill than a mountain.

      Hey Erin, yeah everything is still exactly the same bus wise. Always check www.obbe.at/en before and have "Hallstatt Lahn" as the destination.
      It is the far off season right now so some days Bus 542 from Bad Ischl to Hallstatt Gosaumühle, continues as Bus 543 to Hallstatt Lahn (Seelände) with no actual switch, but it'll be super obvious and isn't like that most of the year.
      Attraction wise it is worth noting that the ice cave and boat rentals won't be open for a few weeks but everything else is open as the salt mine just reopened for the season today.

      Is that the Madlhof by the Salzburg Airport? If so both bus 10 and bus 180 have stops close by and are 10 minutes to the heart of old town otherwise it is a 1 hour walk or 10 minute cab. Luckily Google maps in integrated well with the buses in Salzburg

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Před 11 měsíci

      If you take the bus from Salzburh you won't cross by the Puchheim station to drop your stuff as the bus connects in Bad Ischl. You'd want to do the train for both parts if you want to drop bags and then use the bag lockers at the salt mine visitors center as a backup if needed

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Před 11 měsíci

      You can train though puccheim to drop your bags and then get off the train in Bad Ischl to follow the end of the bus options into town especially if you are trying to the ice cave or 5figners and then do the ferry/train with no bus on the way to Vienna.
      The bus in Bad ischl doesn't leave until after the train option stops

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Před 11 měsíci +1

      You can definitely do the 5 fingers, especially if arriving by bus as you end up riding through town all the way to the Dachstein Visitors center where you take the cable car up two levels plus a 30 minute walk to the 5 fingers. Many people do this even if they aren't doing the ice cave tour and then ride the bus back down after to the hallstatt lahn bus stop on the south end of the village near the salt mine visitor center

      That can be tricky as there arent many options and it fills up fast. There are 3 great hotels (Gasthofs) on our free walking tour guide near market square that are wonderful and Grüner Baum is out favorite. www.bigboytravel.com/europe/austria/hallstatt/freewalkingtour/
      The Krippenstein Alpine Lodge up Dachstein Mountain near the hallstatt ice cave and 5 fingers is also amazing to stay at.

      thanks for watching! I assume you are planning on going this December 2024?
      While the Ice Cave will be closed, the Salt Mine and lift up to the Sky Walk will be open every day of December. The Salt Mine only closes for around a month from mid-Jan to mid-Feb each year but is otherwise open basically every day
      there is a slim chance that weather could alter the bus schedule, but heavy snow isn't common at the village level in December. We always recommend double checking the current schedule closer to your visit dates at www.oebb.at/en

    Visited Hallstatt yesterday (27th July 2019) and it was pretty damn easy to get there with bus. We bought all the tickets there on OBB's app and took the second earliest 150, the weather was nice when we got there and almost no people, visited the Beinhaus and got some sweet photos of the city. Stopped at a cafe and got something to drink. About 11am it started to get really crowded especially with Asian people flooding the city from Tourist busses, we decided to head back to Salzburg, simply looked at the plan on your website and waited for the bus to arrive, it started to really get overcast and windy so it was perfect timing. We bought the tickets from Hallstatt Lahn to Bad Ischl on OBB's app and bought the last ticket from Bad Ischl to Salzburg in the bus. Thank you sir for making it easy, we even helped a man with his kids get there because he was confused about how to get there. Highly recommend taking the earliest bus from Salzburg especially in the weekend

      We have always bought them from thr driver but you can definitely buy either from thr www.oebb.at/en website or the ticket machines ahead of time.
      If you buy ahead of time make sure to put in Hallstatt Lahn as the destination to force the bus option as the preferred. Since you'll probably want the earlier bus instead of just winging it it can make sense to buy ahead (especially with a group) but isn't required nornally

      for the most part yes the buses and trains both run on Xmas eve, but businesses will close a little early that day in our experience.
      While we have the general winter schedule posted on our How To Get To Hallstatt guide, you will want to double check the OEBB website in 10-12 days with the 24th entered in and a destination of Hallstatt Lahn for the bus. As of today it is only updated through December 14th tickets.oebb.at/en/ticket/travel

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Před 5 lety

      I assume you are going in the Spring/Summer as the Ice Cave and Salt Mine are closed for the winter.
      I plan on updating my suggested itineraries page over the next 24 hours to better answer your question www.bigboytravel.com/europe/topmedievalcities/
      Overall you can do all of them but have to get their on the first bus out so you can get right to the ice cave, depending on the time when your tour is done you can also pop up to the 5 Fingers otherwise you'll have to head right back down to town via the bus to hit up the salt mine tours. Afterward you will have 1-2 hours minimum to walk the town before returning. If you dont do the ice cave right away it isnt possible to do it all and you'll want to avoid weekends when it is busier.

    Excellent video. This is very helpful for the travelers who are travelling for the first time. I've checked your website as well. It also have very helpful information.
    I have just one question. I found the timetables of busses in your website. Could you please confirm if those are latest timetables? If not, where can I get the latest timetable of 150, 152 & 153 busses so that I can plan my activities accordingly.

    • @Bigboytravel
      @Bigboytravel  Před 4 měsíci +1

      the timetables come out every 6-12 months. I spot check them 2-3 times a year even in between my visits and they are still current. There can be temporarly changes which are usually posted in paper at the bus stop and the transportation website. The best rule of thumb is always to double check the most up-to-date schdule for the days of your visit at www.oebb.at/en
