  • Spy baits are a great bait for chasing and catching smallmouth bass. There is a lot to learn however in terms of knowing what rods, line and baits to use. In addition to knowing the retrieve speeds and cadences. But most of all, in today’s episode you’ll see how the bait looks in the water!

Great tips Mark. I bought a Berkley spy bait a while back but haven’t used it yet. I’ll be using your advice the next time out!!

Thanks for the underwater footage of the spybait Mark. I have picked some up over the years, but have not caught a fish on them yet. I may need to slow down after watching your video. Happy 4th of July.

Any experience using them in faster moving river current? Wonder how it would work letting the current spin the blades with hardly moving the lure. I fish inline spinners that way

I don’t have any experience in that situation but I can see it being effective. My first thought was fishing smallies around wing dams on the Mississippi.

I know this is off topic but I’m curious what your thoughts are. You made a video a few weeks ago discussing bluegill imitators and you mentioned some soft plastics like the Bellows gill and the Guilty Pleasure rig. Do you think hyper detailed baits like the Berkeley Gilly and hard swim baits are unnecessary in general? I love using them but I get the sense the fish respond mostly to movement and colors instead of a perfect imitation.

I can’t say I’ve used them a lot but when I do it’s usually only in ultra clear water.

I threw that over brush and rock piles this past winter on Tablerock and killed the Spots and Smallmouth. I have yet to pick it up this summer thinking that since the fish are more active in the hotter water they would want a faster moving bait. What's your thoughts on this Mark?

In my opinion, a spy bait is a year round bait. However, in the summer it becomes one of several options for smallies. It would be on the front deck along with a Ned Rig, Drop Shot, Tube, Hair Jig, and an Underspin.

Have you tried it on lake Geneva ? Seems like it would work there ??

My goal is to get better using live scope and Lake Geneva is the place I intend to practice close to home. A spy bait is one of the presentations I will be using.
