- Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over. A very emotional last song from their farewell tour. So sad, Paul Hester is in tears. One of the best songs ever written. Thought I'd upload a decent quality version because the other videos on here don't do the song or the performance justice. Go and buy the DVD folks, you won't regret it! Recorded November 24th 1996

My dad, the most stable person in my life and my best friend, died yesterday in corona. He was by himself in the hospital. I could not say goodbye to him. Listening to this song and crying, how can I live without him...

I`m very sorry for your loss Melanie. I have been through it too, so I know the pain that you are in right now. I know that it may not help right now, but always remember.....I`m sure that your Dad knew how much he was loved when he left this earth. My blessings and prayers go out to you Melanie.
It's a crime to separate you like that. Don't let THEM win.
I am so sorry for your loss. My family lives in Corona and I will be traveling there for Thanksgiving dinner, regardless of those idiotic lockdowns. We always have a circle of prayer before our meal. I will say a prayer for y’all. Please be strong. Peace and Love.

The world got darker when we lost Paul Hester. Sparkly on the outside and battling demons within. RIP Paul
Truth. My heart aches for him every time I see this video. I am sad that these are demons that he could not overcome, but rejoice that he he could join us for the part of the journey of life that he could bear and share with us.
This performance was close to 30 years ago. My oh my, how time and life do fly so quickly by!
I’ve got friends who finished high school and flew to Sydney for this concert straight after graduation, they were such die hard fans that they were in the first few rows and you can see them in various songs in this concert as the camera pans to the audience, immortalised in video, and forever young. After 27 years sometimes you just go through life with questions, and memories…
Loved your comment!
This song takes my breath away. since I was 18 years old, when I heard it for the first time, it marked my life. Today, over 50 years old, I still suffer from it...
I have listened more this song in the last 3 months than I did since the song was written and I do not know why but it brings me to tears
It completely speaks to the human condition!
Good memories from a decade when life seemed much better than it is today, and the music was an integral part of what made those times as great as they were.

Paul cried through the whole song. It was the end. He never recovered. RIP sweet soul. This song was for you.
Why is he cryng?
Breaks my heart every time i watch it. He was already crying before the song starts. His eyes are noticeably swollen. He looks completely crushed. They all look sad, but Paul really looks crushed.
I've always wondered the extent of the impact this had on his depression and subsequent death years later.

No phones, just good people enjoying great music
john Sturges Yeah notice that? Phones are such a distraction now. Even parent seem to care about playing games or texting istead of enjoying life with their kids. Such a shame.
This song was popular when I was a teenage girl vacationing in Florida with my parents. I fell hardcore for a local boy. Surfer... Shoulder length sun bleached hair, deep sun tanned skin tinged with a hint of red, lips that tasted like Carmex and skin that had the most intoxicating scent of salt water and Coppertone sun tan oil. It was very much like every coming of age movie that had ever been filmed on the beach. It was also the hardest "goodbye" of my life at the time. We spent 10 fun filled, magical days just hanging out at the arcades playing pinball, swimming in the ocean, floating for what seemed like hours on his surf board and stealing kisses whenever we wanted. I can still close my eyes and smell the ocean, feel the heat of the afternoon sun on my skin, hear the intensely loud sounds of people laughing and carrying on without a care in the world. Then just like that, it ended as quickly as it had begun. I can picture that goodbye as if it happened just yesterday. I could feel the breeze on my face as I closed my eyes and he kissed my forehead, my cheeks, my lips. My parents, so understanding and patient, sat waiting in our car in the hotel parking lot. I only looked back once after I walked away from him. I left him standing with tears in his eyes on that beach. My own tears fell as I stopped at the top of the wooden staircase that gave access to the beach, turned that one last time and waved goodbye. As my parents drove us away from the beach over that beautiful bridge that leads to and from Daytona, I knew I would never see him again. For me, this song is a sweet reminder of how innocent and equally brutal teenage crushes can be. But it IS a wonderful memory of young love found and lost. I can only hope that if he ever reminisces about that summer, he smiles and thinks of me fondly.
omg I cried.
Wow...pretty powerful. Do you remember his name? I bet he could easily be found via social media. Take a chance, why not?
When u lovend someone u cant ever replaced that had been hallowed by someone..

Wow, that moved me
I've got chronic depression. I lived the best of life when this song was released, the year after I started to have episodes.
Melancholia and nostalgia in a deep sense. This is what this wonderful song brings. The time I was really alive. I believed my life would be full of achievements. I sense this in the song, the sounds.
Now I can function, work and earn a living. But things were never the same. Today I slept all day cause I had not to go working. I found no reason to stand and live my day as it happens every weekend. I am beat.
The dream is over after fighting decades. 💔
But the song refreshes my soul. It is something notably amazing. The way it touches within is pure magic. 🙂
Same. Hey.

In case anyone was wondering, this concert was on November 24th, 1996, called the "Farewell to the World". This was the last song they played, which is why the drummer, Paul Hester, was a little tearful at 2:53. In 2005, Paul committed suicide from depression - Crowded House went on to start the band back up in 2006. So this was Paul's last song he ever played with them.. RIP.
damn that made me bummed as fuck
+Top10Archive Oh, God!! I did not know that, I feel stunned!!
+Top10Archive That is so sad, especially how much I loved this band, and all their songs mean so much to me.
+Top10Archive Oh, how horrible!! So very, very sad to hear. Poor Paul; wish he'd have gotten some help (or maybe better help). How ironic, also, they're sing "Don't Dream It's Over" (one of my favorite songs) - a song of hope and encouragement. Depression is a HORRIBLE, painful disease, and is still greatly misunderstood and disrespected to this very day. :-(
So sad he committed suicide. Rip Paul.

RIP, Paul Hester. The sadness is noticeable even at the onset of this song ... you're hopefully at peace now, mate, and I'm glad your friends all hugged you at the end of the show. A great song from a talented band.
R. I. P. Paul Hester. And thank you for being a part of so many great memories.
Best song ever. They don't make them like this now.
You come here when you‘re feeling sad and you find a litte healing. I bless you all.
One of the best beautiful pop ballads of the all times
+edgardo gregorini I'd even say one of the best songs ever written. (But that's just my opinion)
+COSMOB3AR - Pop is precisely what their music was/is. Just because it wasn't in the Top 40 doesn't mean that it wasn't Pop. Nothing alternative rock about them whatsoever. Did you also think The Smiths/Morrissey were alternative rock?
Hello guy, regarding comments; I meant "a great pop song", because at the time this type of music was considered so. maybe pop a few years ago was of such quality that today it is not generally recognized in this way. "Alternative Rock" is rawer, style is associated with more powerful voice distorted guitars, and rather "noise" in some cases. However, there are several songs from the same group who go by that line, but do not think "don`t dream it`s over" is the example in this case. Regards!
Morrissey & The Smiths have alternative rock songs
+edgardo gregorini Today pretty much anything that is guitar based or has the traditional rock four piece but isn't rock in the classic sense is called Alternative or Indie. However, this is pop at it's best. I will always think of the Smiths as a pop band, because at the time they were light years ahead of contemporary "rock."
This song is such a bittersweet memory for me. The song is just beautiful. I danced in my momma's kitchen to this song in 1987 with my then girlfriend who later became my wife. Sadly we broke up and it was a bitter end. But I wouldn't trade that dance with her back when we were so in love for anything. Makes me cry every time I hear it.
The past is yesterday, the future is tomorrow, enjoy the “present” bc its a “gift”
Sorry about the divorce
Should be an anthem for all of humanity
Neil's voice is so effortlessly amazing. Everything about it, his tone, control and pitch, just so good.

It was 1996.... No cell phones with cameras so...
+Calen Sansom lol right
Cell phones from then were about the size of a brick...Motorola had probably just introduced one of the first flip phones.. but only the mouthpiece would fold out...and the phones had antennas the size of a drum stick..(not the chicken kind either)....

Seeing Hester looking so emotional and hearing the crowd sing 'don't dream it's over' is one of the most moving things ever.
Evil never wins. It only takes souls. Thats so sad. Never let Evil win because in the end it never does. Keep your Faith in God. 😔🙏💙❤️✝️
Without doubt, one of the best songs ever written, Truly wonderful.
A very emotional performance from the band and brilliant lead vocals from Neil as always. Each time Paul the drummer cries it gets me deep down, especially as he took his own life a few years later and he had two young daughters. I can't begin to imagine what losing a dad as a kid would feel like. Such a troubled soul, suffered with depression for many years but his fans loved him to pieces and his legacy lives on. We still love you Paul. RIP brother! ❤
Edit: wow didn't expect so many likes for this comment. Thanks guys. Hessie will always be in his fan's hearts and I know he's watching over his family everyday ❤ this live performance always moves me xx
If you pause the video at 4:30, you'll see Paul with his angelic smile....so beautiful!
No one makes good music like this anymore
I know what it's like to lose a father without saying goodbye. It's gutwrenching. You never want to say goodbye. Feel your pain
I keep coming back to this video again, over and over... there will be a gap and I'll remember and come back and it's the same set of emotions each and every time.
Put simply, this is one of the greatest songs ever written.
Lyrically. Musically. Emotionally.
While we are all mortal people, and we cannot last forever, some things are too beautiful to not. This song is one of those things...
Don't dream, it's over... don't dream it's over... two ways to hear the same words, meaning two entirely different things.
What I love in particular about this video is that when the song ends, they partially open it up, get the crowd singing it, and then end it again.
You can feel the energy pass from the band to the crowd...
It's as if Neil and Crowded House are "giving" this song to the world. It is an acknowledgment that they know they won't be here forever... but that the powerful, sublime song will live forever.
Who are you writing this to? Are you really this lonely?
Well... not to trolls, at least...
Great takeaway from the lyrics. Amazing how music can express the same feelings, in different languages, from people all around the world. Greetings from São Paulo
One of the most beautifully written songs. So simplistic and touching...
😎👍
There are lots and lots of beautifully written songs. Step out of your cave.
This song is truly beautiful. There are hardly any songs these days with worthwhile lyrics that MEAN something! Feel the walls between us; we know that they won't win! Love, Light, and Peace to all here! xx
Very symbolic of those who try to interfear with a loving relationship, sanity, lies about our nature, and anything to try to pull us apart.
This also gives hope to our Queens in our life that we should sacrifice every fiber of our being to make the safe, happy, and feel loved at every moment. And when the hard times come, let us be anchor`s in their lives until we build them up and make them feel loved and cherished again.
Put it on loop and never turn it off. Sad to know that one of these musicians is no longer with us.
And sadly usually the drummer
I've loved this song since it was first released. I'm also thrilled to hear them sing the original song that most of us love... and not change a verse, the beat of the drums.
I started playing guitar, way b4 this song came out...and I love it...but it took me 3 months to learn the opening chords..duh.. Freedom within and Freedom without....
1. Crowd shouts
2. The hand in the air clapping
3. Drummers shots
4. Bassist face
5. Keyboardist face
6. Guitar solo

when i heard this song for the first time...we had just move from canada to paraguay (south america) and we lived on a ranch in a very remote area: no phone, no radio or tv (1970's). We depended on tape recorders (for music in the 80´s). Many years later and having forgoten this song, i stumbled on this song again: it was so heat warming and nostalgic ... its such a great song. It brings back to many memories!

As a youngster just moved to NYC I saw Crowded House LIVE in early Spring 1987 with a group of friends at The Bottom Line in The Village in NYC. It was toward then end of Crowded House first live American tour. This tune was climbing the music charts in the USA at the time. When Crowded House performed this tune the place went wild. EVERYONE knew the lyrics and the sing-along was AMAZING!! Just like then, the spirit of this tune lives on STRONG today! Thank you Neil Finn for introducing the World to your musical brilliance!
Hard to believe how long ago this recording was made. And no surprise at all that this is the best version of this song and has withstood the test of time.
There is freedom within
There is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
Many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're travelling with me
… Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
… Now I'm towing my car
There's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion
But there's no proof
In the paper today
Tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the TV page
… Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
… Now I'm walking again
To the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
Barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release
… Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
You know they won't win
… Don't let them win (Hey now, hey now)
Hey now, hey now
Hey now, hey now
Don't let them win (They come, they come)
Don't let them win (Hey now, hey now), yeah
Hey now, hey now
..”Thanks!”
