My best friend is ethnic Mongolian, my family works in a Mongolian high school (where the Mongolian language is taught), and my current roommate in Germany is from a pastoral area. I am deep in the ethnic culture, but I am still being told by people online that I am brainwashed, which is ridiculous ...... Most of them have not even been to Inner Mongolia. Barrett, if you have time to visit Yunnan province, you would be able to find out more of Chinese minorities. Yunnan is known for its ethnic diversity. Home to 26 different Chinese minorities, it is rich in culture and a good place to learn about non-Han China. Grown up in Yunnan province as a Han, I never remember any of minority schoolmates were treated differently or discriminated. I used to envy them could enjoy more marks added to university entrance exam because they were minorities (as the competition is fierce and the government wants to provide the minority students more chance to enter the universities). I still remember when I was very little, one of my classmates in kindergarten is Hui minority (i.e. Muslin), she had different meals specially made for her. Her culture was respected even she was the only Muslin kid in the whole class. This is how we respect each other.

It can only broaden the conversation and that's always needed in today's world...but I have to take everything with a grain of salt as with all things on the "internet". Everyone has to make their own mind up about things as you know. You guys are awful privileged to experience for yourselves. Keep up the work you are doing.

Guangxi is 壮 minority autonomous region, which means the chairperson of local government has to be a 壮 minority. And local government has to maintain at least 50% of the employee are 壮 minority. In Guangxi 壮 autonomous regions, it is the 壮 government to decide what language they use in that regions. Regional autonomy for ethnic minorities is part of China's constitutional law from the beginning of PRC.

They get ethnic festivals official holidays on top of normal holidays.

Destroying or oppressing a minority leads to a social contradiction between the government and the people. Contradictions like that weaken a society and can contribute to its decline. The aim of China's political philosophy and practice is based around keeping its contradictions as few and as small as possible, and even to eliminate them when the opportunity presents itself. Only if you understand this can you find reason behind China's domestic political moves.

To be a minority, it means you get added a lot points when taking college entrance examination. But honestly, nearly all of the 55 minorities are living under developed areas or rural areas.
