So we have 3 new steam engines in build right now. Utterly brilliant and well done to every project.
Actually more than 3 if you count those which may not see the mainline, like Patriot, G5 etc.

The Holden F5 is coming along steadily, the GCR Class 2 continues to make progress. 3mt 82045 issues bulletins you could set your clock to. 32424 "Beachy Head" is on the home straight. It's not all about stonking great express locos ..... and that's not counting Swindon Lego set conversions, or the seriously involved 'unrebuilding' of 35011.
This just proves that the steam era never ended.
I am a Yorkshire man, and i used to do train spotting at Skipton1950 ,i am still steam enthusiastic i live in Aussie now, I think you volunteers are magical and the business owners are Wizards, good on you.

How impressive to be making it from the ground up. A huge task and congrats to all involved.
I do like the idea of a brand new steam.
This could be a great opportunity for apprenticeship type volunteers. The skill and discipline required to make this engine will translate into many other engineering type skills.
It's vital to keep ALL of the old tech going; vintage cars, steam, biplanes etc., because that stuff is the bedrock of engineering - Newtonian dynamics, pressure-vessels, tin-bashing etc. It doesn't matter how many quantum computers you can build, if you lose these skills then your country is basically a banana republic without the bananas.
This was the main reason this steel business got involved in building these locos - to train young people in serious heavy engineering that would also benefit their business.
@@creamwobbly Not quite. The load was within an area marked off by yellow steel fencing. And because you are in an engineering shop doesn't men you need a hard hat. CTL is a process plant design and manufacture specialist serving petrochemical, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, agro-chemical, fine chemical, utilities and nuclear industries. I think they know all about PPE legislation.
Love that the skills and the drive to recreate a bit of kit that made the UK are still around and going!. Nice one! Nuff said.
Steam engines are real engineering, tough but beautiful stuff! I love this project, wished this would be possible in the Netherlands...
A point of detail; the SL/prefix on the drawing number was for STANDARD loco, not steam loco. The same prefix was used for diesel and electric locos
Good to see the Asquith Universal drilling machine at 2:11. At Bo'ness we have acquired one a kind of temporary permanent loan. a very useful piece of kit. We could not have drilled the foundation rivet holes in No.7 Austerity without it. We are all pensioners at Bo'ness coming to the end of a ten year heavy overall of the Std 4 Tank 80105. We work Tuesdays and Saturdays. Hats off to you doing this one day a week.

It will be fascinating to see these replicas run, particularly as many current locomotives will soon be permanently retired.
"Hengist" is the germanic word for "stallion", a most fitting name for a locomotive. PS: just got the 1000th like. 😃😃😃
Brilliant. This country has disregarded engineering for too long and hopefully this and similar projects will help to inspire some bright youngsters to go into the profession and reach chartered status irrespective of what engineering discipline.

Absolutely love that new steam locos are being built here in the UK. Promoting home-grown engineering skills and production are essential to combat the vagaries and hazards of relying on global trade lines. Hengist is a great name, it was also the name of the first Sealink Ferry I went on in the 1970s from Folkestone to Calais on a long school trip to Arles.
I remember seeing Clan Stewart going through Bingley when I was a lad, quite an event for me.

So how many new steam locos are being built in the UK right now? Seems like there might be quite a few. It's amazing.
It is coming along quite nicely, although why you would build a Clan (and not name it after a Clan!) is a bit baffling.
Great project and I don’t under estimate the scale of the job that had been taken on.
When the "end of the world" happens, the UK will be the only country still able to operate railways, albeit on the token system as the signaling would be gone too. But basic emergency trains would still be able to run thanks to steam preservation. Nice to think that all those 'obsolete old technology' locos are a part of national security now. Nobody even considered that aspect to be considered back in the early preservation days. Of course, getting Welsh steam coal might pose a few problems initially...
I read somewhere after the bomb one of the first vehicles to run was a traction engine and the trams were soon running as well. Our steam locomotives will survive but will any drivers and firemen

@@jackx4311 When the "end of the world" happens I took as no animals surviving so no drivers or firemen and the way some talk these days we may not have much longer before it happens. We should all live and work together to save our tiny blue ball in a vast universe instead of trying to destroy it. Now we too have joined in causing vast amounts of damage to our atmosphere and I don't mean the tiny amount of coal smoke from our locomotives. I mean the pollution that does not count while murdering humans.
The 1952 6P5F group names were all "Clans". So what is the provenance of the name Hengist, which was the name of an Anglo Saxon king? I would have thought a more Scottish name and perhaps an actual Clan might be preferable.
Absolutely. If they named it after a clan it would get (and retain) 1000% more publicity and public interest. What's the point of building a 'Clan' loco that's not a Clan? Why the only Clan that's not named after a clan?
Ah dang. I'm out in the colonies, so can't exactly zip on over to lend a hand. From one oldtimer to another, it's bloody great to see this kind of work being undertaken.

When I first came across this video of Hengist that’s when I first noticed the change in having a BR1F Tender. Is it true that’s what’s she’s getting now? If so I think it could help a lot since the bigger the capacity the longer runs she’ll be able to do

The training given to apprentices on these new-loco builds IS investing in something that has a future - *THEIR future.*
oh, that clan class, i thought the replica was of the highland railway clan class, not the Br standard class 6.
What will become of this new locomotive when it is completed. I assume it would not go into regular service, but, end up in a museum or a stretch of trackage for historic rail rolling stock.
Like Tornado before it, the intent would be some mainline running not just on heritage railways. Though mainline running needs a lot of additional cost for modern black boxes and things that are required.
The only factory capable of building your boiler is in Germany. The Meiningen factory, Tornado's and other boilers were built there, please acknowledge this fact with a plaque of gratitude somewhere on display when it is in public service.
I was wondering about that, given that Tornado and it’s mates had them built by Dampflok Meiningen. One of many updates to the original design, with them being all steel ones. One of the useful side effects of the history that Deutsche Reichsbahn carried on using steam traction in East Germany for quite a lot longer than the West.
But there ARE plenty of other boiler manufacturers in England - such as Israel Newton at Cromford, Derbyshire - and those at Boston Lodge on the Ffestiniog Railway, and at Bridgnorth on the Severn Valley Railway.
You could look into Japan. There are some capable people there.

is the engine the same as the original? or has it been up dated, and the technology moved on, is there any way it could be made to run cleaner, great to see such interest.
Any steam engine will run cleaner on coke, but coke is more expensive than coal, could in future be harder to come by, and I assume that the firebox would need to be optimised for coke burning. PS I'm not talking about an American fizzy drink.
It has been modified to be more efficient, cleaner and better, using modern technology. It might be as good as a Class 7 even but we have to wait and see about that.
Will it have square wheels? You have to know Carry on Cleo to get that one.🤣🤣

I was told many years ago when I was starting my engineering career: "Engineering is essentially a gentleman's profession". Still just as true now.
Wrong; not just on these new builds. Every preserved steam railway I'v visited which has a fair sized engine shed has been taking on apprentices for decades - not only giving them a lot of responsibility and hands on experience of solving problems like "How do we work out what's wrong with this? And how do we fix or replicate or even improve on it using the tools and facilities we've got here?"
The railways concerned invariably insist on their apprentices going to tech colleges on day release, to obtain technical qualifications, too.

I'm sure the reason was given somewhere, but why are they building a new steam locomotive? I thought Europe was trying to eliminate carbon producing vehicles (ex: electric cars).
None of the original engines of this class were preserved when retired in the 1960s and a group of people wanted to recreate one. It's an enthusiasts passion project not a commercial venture though they would do revenue generating trips behind it to recoup some of the costs.

Due to a shortage of oil, Mr Hitler had a lot of coal fired steam locomotives made during WW2. We might see a government plan yet, when reserves become scarce?
Oil firing may be the way forward for steam powered machines. There seems to be no shortage of oil in the world ……….no cinders and ash to worry about……just a thought ……… cheers DaveH
Oil firing works well with Southern Pacific and Santa Fe engines. The Union Pacific Big Boy was converted to oil and is running just fine. It would be kind of sad, in a way, but it may become inevitable.

The uk can now make smoke-free coal. Use this and get these trains back in use.
Steam trains ARE in use, all over the country, on preserved lines, AND on main-line excursions.
Make it run on recycled oli eçt. Green and clean. They can be retrofitted to do so. Nice and nostalgic but dirty and polluting. They addedto the air pollution in the Industrial Revolution.

I have worked with steam locomotives in the U.S. for many years and this is not a smart aleck question. What is the purpose of a new steam locomotive? These are obscenely expensive to build and maintain. At least in the U.S., railfans do not contribute anything close to the amount of funds needed to run them; and the owners of the rail lines with few exceptions are hostile to hosting excursions. Does this group have a business plan to support the construction and ongoing maintainence and use of a new steam locomotive?

@@charlesburgoyne-probyn6044as you say it probably is more about the hobby aspect though there are people in the world like myself who believe that the chances of a major coronal mass ejection like the 1859 Carington event is becoming more likely to happen again. Even worse, the earths magnetic field which protects us is weakening due to a magnetic pole flip which has started and is predicted to happen in the 2040s. If this does happen again then all of our electrical infra structure will be wiped out and we will find our selves back in a pre industrial era overnight. If this is true then it would be wise to build up stock on low tech steam engines and coal.
The British steam preservation scene is different from anything I have seen in the US (where I now live). The US steam locomotives seem to mostly be static with limited effort to slow the rust and decay. There are many preservation railways in the UK, with an interest to keep many locomotives in running order. .... Which is why most films (movies) requiring a steam train are filmed in the UK.
Well the first difference between the USA and the UK is that all UK Main Line tracks are owned by the State not private freight companies and they are operated by 'Network Rail'. Access is only restricted by getting a path on which ever line you wish to run. There is also a large number of what we call 'preserved railways' that are expanding and doing well.
Steam trains are very popular and command a premium ticket price with the majority combining high class dining with the joys of steam travel. The business cases are pretty substantial which is why businesses are building new as well as operating restored engines.
The first new steam engine was 60163 'Tornado', a 4 -6-2 A1 Pacific, which first steamed in 2008. It is now in its first major refit and has been a resounding success. It hit over 100 MPH in 2017. The group that built that is now building 2007 'Prince of Wales', a 2-8-2 P2 Pacific.
So in summary yes there is a very good case to be made to build a new steam loco in the UK even without the added benefits of training young apprentices in heavy engineering skills they will carry for the rest of their lives.

My guess would be because, as said in the video, there is not one left in existence. Presumably also as they have enough of the original plans to use.
The Clans, as *originally* built, were poor performers - the faults could have been eradicated quite easily, but steam locos were being rapidly replaced at the time, so BR couldn't see the point. Those faults *have* been corrected in the new build. (and if your bothered to read up on it, you'd know that yourself)

Sorry, I don't think so. Hengist is being built to a 1950's design which has been, and is being, updated as much as we are able, see the project website for more info. I love steam engines They are clean and green... well accept for the coal bit... So how are they going to heat the kettle? The world's biggest Hornby with wind power through the rails? It's a great project but the UK has gone evangelistic mad on fossil fuel and screwing postal workers...

Im not sure that modern attitudes to coal fired things is going to allow any of the new build steam a long enough life in order to recoip costs. Not only that, no homegrown coal is available anymore, further increasing running costs.
Imported coal is _cheaper_ than British deep-mined coal, that is why we don't mine coal in the UK anymore.

As a steam lover, I hate to put a damper on these brilliant projects, but I fear that within the next few years the British Government will very likely ban the use of all fossil fuelled machines.
There will be exemptions, imho.
Totally unworkable policy. People just imagine cars, lorries etc. but never consider the huge numbers of generators, cut off saws, concrete saw cutting machines, construction and agriculture, to name two industries cannot replace these with battery power.

I am all for banning the use of all cars that use fossil fuels. However even so a few examples kept for historical interest and in working order is not an unreasonable exemption. Rather like we are glad of castles still standing and not been pulled down for a nice new block of flats. It is not like they will be running every day. There is even a castle in France being built, also a good thing reproduction just now and again. Hopefully all the making will be well documented and add to the recorded historical knowledge base.

"The first five of the planned second batch of 15 locomotives were intended for use on BR's Southern Region; these were allocated names Hengist, Horsa, Canute, Wildfire and Firebrand, which had all been previously used on locomotives in southern England." Hengist did originally start construction in 1952 before being abandoned. The new build keeps the old 1950s name.
China is opening coal fired power stations at an unbelievable rate. A little bit of smog coming out of the UK is totally irrelevant.

The ORIGINALS were poor locos - but all the faults in the originals have been corrected in the new builds.
At a time of a terrifying climate catastrophe , when we are encouraging people to give up their polluting petrol and diesel cars , I literally burst into tears when I saw this unbelievable development , I will be writing to my MP to have this plan to produce massive unnecessary pollution generators stopped immediately , all right thinking people will stand against this utter madness , Mother Earth cries out for justice ..
