this is a pretty good hack for practicing backgrounds and haley did a great job, but here's some extra tips bc I love drawing backgrounds and I have a fair amount of experience:
- adding more variety in plants and textures (and maybe drawing small animals like birds or mice if you're already adding tons of detail) can tie the background better with characters (don't go too overboard though or the characters wont pop--if you make the background details more similar in color-not tone though lol-then your characters can shine)
-don't be afraid to shade your backgrounds with really dramatic lighting. I really like art with a lot of contrast, i.e. really dark shadows. It's fun to do too, especially with digital art
-if you need to fill a large area (like the cliff in haley's drawings) quick then just slapping on some subtle texture can really add something
-a personal preference! I like adding in man made objects to backgrounds (like buildings, cell towers, wells, roads/tracks, etc.)
of course this is just random stuff I do in my art and you can do whatever you want in your art and still make it look good.
Also I'm an architecture major, so I like drawing buildings and cities better than landscapes so i guess take my advice with a grain of salt?

I'm happy to see other folks use Minecraft as help for figuring out backgrounds and perspectives. I did it once in college to try it out and my teacher thought it was smart considered it a tool like a ruler and pencil, but my classmates got mad and called it cheating.

When you do this again, I recommend using shaders!! Itll make everything SO much prettier and easier

Today i learned to love Minecraft even more, because it's not only an awesome game, a place to interact with internet friends and a big part of my childhood, but it's also awesome inspiration for art. Thank you, Lavender! 💕
Just a small story I invented for the characters:
The two girls with the mask come from a kingdom that's full of mountains, in that kingdom they have a lot of mines, and their economy is entirely based off of exportation of precious gems and minerals to the other kingdoms, thought the high mountains that surround the kingdom make the tradings pretty difficult, and the resources of that kingdom are starting to end. The two girls were sent on exploration to find a "new home" and (since the population of the mountain kingdom isn't really nice) possibly one that's already populated so that they won't have to re-build their houses.
The elf girl comes from the perfect kingdom, in that kingdom they are really wealthy, have a lot of food, water and resources, basically the kingdom the two girls were searching for. The elf girl usually really loves to go for long walk, even really far away from her kingdom, one day while she was on one of that walks, she gets found by the two girls who basically kidnap her and make her lead them to her kingdom.
Of course the elf girl will try to mislead them (like by taking wrong turn or wrong streets) and eventually the three of them become friends, and try to find a way to help the two girls kingdom without attacking any other kingdom.
