Really looks like you could do with finding a local fabricator to knock up an adjustable frame on wheels with a cantilever arm or even hydraulic lift mechanism to get those heavy grates lifted and moved easily and safely! You only get one spine and once it’s damaged it’s damaged! I would offer my services but not much use as I am in the uk! Great video as always!
My thought for easier removal would be a couple of keys with handles and T-shaped ends that would fit through the grille, rotate 90 degrees to hook them under, then lift up (maybe with someone to help on one key) just high enough to kick a nice long, round piece of wood or a metal pipe under the edge. Then just drag the grate off the frame by riding on the roller.
I designed and built a similar tool for an old boy that did work in nam holes so it had a slotted bar in the frame to accommodate the various key and handle shapes, every so often he would turn up with a new set of keys or hooks and I’d weld a bar onto them that simple slotted into the slots on the frame of the device, it was so simple but revolutionised it for him!
Ollie, situations like at 26:30 just be carefull. Maybe get a gas detector or have someone act as a buddy. Have you considered building a custom drain grate lifter ? Basically it would have 4 wheels spaced a foot wider than the drain width that would ride say 1 foot off the ground. You would have 4 cables hanging (1 from each corner almost) which are connected to a winch (electric or manual). You attach the hooks on the end of the cable to each corner and start winching. Once it clears the drain hole (ie lift it 4 inches) you just wheel the device back. It might just save your back one day. It would work the same as an engine hoist but much smaller and lower profile. I remember clearing a rainwater drain once. Basically the house is on sloping land so they set the gutters to drain down a pipe, under the ground into the back yard and it would spit the water out a retaining wall . Of course due to leaves / sludge it eventually clogged up so now the gutters were overflowing. I went to the exit pipe with a small gardening spade and kept digging the dirt / leaves out. It got wetter and wetter until suddenly it shot out like a 4 inch / 10cm thick snake. All that back pressure shot it about 6 - 7 feet . The next job was to get back up to the gutters and clean all the remaining rotted leaves out and spray a heap of water down the pipes as well. Years later it still flows well. I remember seeing storm water drains so full that the manhole covers were coming out of the road (not a good thing). There had been some serious rain for days. Thankfully I didn't live anywhere near there.

I used to carry one of those cinch straps with 2 hooks for tying down cargo. Once the grate is broken free you use the straps and hooks to lift from a standing position, then kick a piece of pipe under it to roll it away. 1.5" PVC pipe (scrounged from job sites) is plenty strong enough as long as you don't use it as a pry bar.
