I'm waiting for an NBL streaming app similar to the NBA app that I can pay a one off fee each season and watch any game whenever I like on any of my devices, without having to sign up to an external company streaming service...

It's about economics in the sport, also. The NBL invests in big names like Pippen and Melo to bring more eyeballs to the games and investors in the teams, which attracts more advertisers. It's all about the $$
It's a professional sport,this is what all pro sport's have always been about...Money. No different to any other pro league regardless of sporting code around the world.
