Dean Lister, also known as “The Boogeyman”, is a professional grappler who is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Jeffrey Higgs who gained notoriety within the BJJ world after he won the 2003 ADCC (the world’s most prestigious submission wrestling/Nogi event) in the open weight division. Dean Lister also has a background in wrestling and experience in Sambo and ventured through MMA competing in important organizations such as Pride FC and UFC. The Boogeyman started in his early MMA days fighting for KOTC (King of the Cage organization). As one of his opponents injured himself before the fight, Lister was left with no opponent, and due him being a big name in the grappling circuit it was extremely hard to find a replacement, people did not want to fight him. Because of these, he started being called the Boogeyman.
Jean Jacques Machado is a legendary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competitor and instructor. Regarded as one of Carlos Gracie Junior‘s top students in the 1980’s, a status cemented with his wins over several important grapplers of his generation, including grappling and mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Wallid Ismail at the Copa Atlantica tournament in Brazil. Jean Jacques Machado continued his good form after he moved to the United States to open his own academy, winning years later the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC).

How did they define who won?
Jean Jacques Machado is an absolute legend and a treasure to the world, as is his whole family.
This is a easy 30 lb weight advantage for lister who competed comfortablely at 220 vs jean at 169 In his prime lister was a recking machine on the mat. The true beauty here is watching Jean who escapes the boogyman from back control an defends himself masterfully from bottom. Its all the little things that take place here that many folks miss which makes this great. Don't need to be flying around doing cartwheels to be awesome 💯
I was wondering so it’s that much? I thought so
Machados game is so tight.
His jujitsu never failed him in an encounter with a larger master.
JJM is fighting with one hand, one grip, thats incredible.
The first ADCC champion - despite the biological disadvantage
@@perfectsplit5515 Also first to sub all 4 opponents straight up.
Jean-Jacques looks so healthy and youthful here, wow! Two absolute BJJ kings, right here. Grew up idolizing both of these refined legends.
Think about this: if they were competing in the Olympics, these two guys would not only be in different weight divisions but Machado would actually be in the Paraolympics. Amazing
I don't think Machado would have wanted to be in the paralympics when he was perfectly capable of beating and hanging with the top guys.
@@andrewsidelinger3475 exactly my point.
Why Paralympics ?
Jj had broken ribs for this match.
@@EazyboyZ2012 because he's missing fingers on one of his hands. I hadn't noticed before this video.
J Machado legend
Born no fingers no problem
Smaller guy no problem
Amazing
Exactly Legend 💯
I heard of Machado because of Eddie Bravo and I also heard of Dean Lister, but I had no idea Machado didn't have fingers, and so just staying in that long without getting submitted is a victory, also his reputation and just hearing his name makes me want to search more of his bouts
@@theFormidable1 he’s one of five brothers (himself, Carlos, Rigan, John, and Roger) and is widely regarded as the most technical. He was born with only a finger and thumb on that hand which had a big influence on his game. Well worth looking him up for technique alone.
JJ Machado truly a legend. He taught Chuck Norris Jui Jitsu that's how long he's been doing it
What a battle. I didn't know Jean Jacques only had thumb and pinky on left hand. Holy fuck, dude is amazing.
I believe he has a thumb and the other four fingers fused together in a stub. A lobster claw hand. And still managed to become the first ADCC champ.
While not the most entertaining match from a spectator point of view, it is a brilliant one to watch/study from a technical point of view. To see Dean's pressure top game( not something he is known for but still possesses) against one of the best butterfly guards in history is a real clinic in how to pass and work against that style of guard. Also, watching Jean Jacques ridiculously good butterfly guard/overhook game is a real treat as well. This match is a masterclass of in both aspects of guard passing and guard retention.
Overhook control on someone that size and power is God -like honestly 👀
@@thomasavona1 no doubt. Dean was likely close to or over 200lbs here. He usually competed between 185-210 lbs give or take.
It also looks like jj was natural, no steroids. He really gave 100% and showed composure against a really outstanding athlete and champion.
@@thomasavona1 Machado definitely doesn't have a roided type body.
Yeah, you can hear Rampage getting bored in the background cracking jokes. Good match of legends though.
Lister in his glory days. Glad to see him after a rough stretch in life back to doing Jits. He's a true ambassador of the sport and a living legend.
Wha happen to him?
@@alonzokincaid1362 “You’re stuck in a prison cell in your own mind,” Lister said. “You don’t feel like doing anything. I was never like that before. I have no doubt about [having brain injuries or CTE symptoms]. Because even right now I have to focus so I can make words. I’ll forget random things. I’ll forget a friend’s name sometimes. Like a friend, like what’s his name again? Someone I know.”
The man should’ve never done MMA. If there had been BJJFanatics back then he would have just been able to sell a bunch of instructionals and live off the royalties.
It’s a shame to see such a likable and influential guy deal with the issues he has.
@@burtbun3689I'd be really surprised if he has cte, he never took very many beatings or head shots.
@@nintendogamer5472most damage is done in training / sparring not the televised events
JJM is one of the the greatest of all time! Dean is The Godfather of leg locks. Both legends in their own right!
Absolute legends
Good ol Jocko Watching in the back lol
Man, what an awesome display from these two!
There comes a point in a fight where skill is so close that what takes over is the physical aspect, and Dean Lister had that slight advantage
He definitely did
Slightly advantage? His physical strength is far greater.
dean had 2 massive advantages and still didn't even come close to winning which is always the case with him. he's a joke
Lister has about 30 lbs of weight advantage.
@@reenamola2162Imagine having a 30-lb weight advantage over a guy who doesn’t have fingers in one of his hands.
Jean is simply amazing to have survived that with just one hand functioning.
Absolutely
Both hands most definitely function! Ok he has three fingers missing but saying he only has one hand functioning is not true
There are a few gods of the sport. For them to meet in open combat is amazing, a gift to us mortals, all we can can do is applaud and marvel.
amazing. you know i watched Machados videos for so long until i actually read somewhere about his hand, i had to READ it. i just never knew. he does what he does in the sport with one f'en hand. amazing.
Brabo Riccardo! Mais um vídeo top pra comunidade!! Oss
What a chess match! Two of the all time greatest.
So much respect to Jean Jacques 💪🔥
hes the man!
JJM is a legend and created over half the grips for modern No Gi
Rampage Jackson up in the stands getting bored and cracking jokes making everyone laugh. He was sitting behind me trying to blend in, but couldn't stay quiet anymore. Good times though.
ha ha ha yeah classic rampage
Two of the best competitors. I respect both of these men.
And the sportsmanship and respect for each other. Looked like friends grappling. Love it.
Dean was a "BEAST" on the mats...which made this match a testament of just how "AWESOME" J.J.M. was.
absolutely
@@RiccardoAmmendoliaBJJ 👍
Not exactly Lister didn’t really go for it that’s why John Jock wasn’t too happy with him after the match but then he’s a good guy got over it Mr. didn’t go for the win did he would’ve truly won or truly lost John Jacques more about that no playing some models shoot some Patty cake
Nothing against Lister great guy he obviously wanted to win he didn’t really want to challenge himself
Not quite enough heart in this moment
JEAN-JACQUES é um dos maiores de todos os tempos!
100%
Jean Jacques should be in adcc hall of fame
Good point
Almost first 10 minutes with Dean squashing the butterfly guard sweep, not trying to pass, just holding on. And the ref does not call him for stalling. This is why this particular sport will never gain in popularity beyond a few hard core fans and participants. Even after doing BJJ for over a decade myself, I love to do it but hate to watch it. At least matches like this.
Times have changed
How did he get in that position? Maybe machado should've worked on takedowns instead of starting all the rolling sessions already on the mat, or the famous jump to guard and then bitch that the guy just lays on you! Hell you put him there!😂😂😂
True
Very inspiring technical work from both sides, respect to JJM.
Yes indeed!
We were at this match and I remember it well. Someone in the audience was yelling “pass his guard dean!!”
Of all the old masters, if I had to choose just one to learn from, it would be JJ or Renzo-- despite being a huge fan of all the old Gracies back in the day.
Incredible match.
So stoked right now let's get it on!!!
Random but I love your retro intros
Thanks for the upload.

No waaaaay!!
He marches by Lister’s corner right in the beginning, too. Must be standing by to get some.
JJM is such a stud 🙏🏽🔥
This is awesome, so did the timer just go off or did someone tap? How did they do the points?
Time expired
Dean Lister was smashing Jean Jacques most of the time, But I admire Jean Jacques ability to stay calm and control his breathing under pressure. We can learn alot from this match.. great warriors!
Dean respected Jean Jacques' Jiu-Jitsu so much he pretty much just laid on him for 15 minutes before starting to work and then laid on him some more.
Whose fault was that when jean got taken down so often?
@@hubster4477 He didn't get taken down often, if even at all. He pulled butterfly and/or half guard.
@@anoshsheytan thats the same thing, why pull guard against a guy whose bigger and stronger and you cant get off you??
@@hubster4477 The intention in your bjj game should be to have the opponent fall into your game and plan..

For real. You can see the lineage to EB and rubber guard play from this too.
Do you have any David Terrell matches?
I got a couple yeah stay tuned
@@RiccardoAmmendoliaBJJ you’re the man! 💯 🥋 😎 🙏🏼
I was there in person and got pictures of Dean Lister standing next to Gene LeBell and Gokor.
You can hear Jocko Willink in the background and see him @ 22:03. Never realized how involved he was in BJJ.
Thought that looked like him. He's also there at 17:49.
i never knew both of these legends fought each other
Jean Jacques is the MAN
absolutely
Ground fighting, for me, has a place and time. But I know I'm not a pure ground guy because even though I can appreciate great skill. Boring comes to mind. BJJ helped me win many Cage fights but to solely focus on one range and exclude the others is not a rounded system. It has it purpose, and it is but a fourth of the ranges of combat. Kicking, Punching, Trapping and Grappling. To focus on one and exclude the others, no matter how effective you are in one range opens you up in 3/4ths of the fight possibilities.
Yeah this is a jiu jitsu match
I don’t disagree but if you can’t grapple you can’t really fight. I mean that in the most respectful way possible because I have great respect for many styles of martial arts. But if you’re a strike based fighter you’re in for a world of hurt if someone gets ahold of you and you don’t know how to at least escape or get back up. Conversely you don’t need to be a black belt jj guy or a high level wrestler to get ahold of someone and that’s enough to throw off a very good striker. The fact is that fighting is by its nature chaotic and the ability to grapple well gives you a way to control the chaos.
I trained from the time I was 9 and started with wrestling in school and then after highschool started BJJ and Muay Thai. My brother is a Kyokushin Black Belt and one year on new year’s we got kinda drunk and decided to put on an exhibition in the front yard for our friends. He discovered a rather helpless feeling when he got clinched and on the bottom of my mount. Of course he’s my brother so I didn’t beat him, but he went on and earned a purple belt in BJJ after that.
I’ve had 20 fights, along with some street encounters and the guys who couldn’t grapple were completely fucked. Their only chance was to try to knock me out before I could get a clinch. Once I get a clinch it’s my choice on how I want to proceed. I can be vicious and lay a beating or I can be nice and finish with a choke.
Only one guy ever gave me real trouble and he was a high level wrestler. I couldn’t keep him on the ground and he’d stand back up to throw bombs.
@@darylkenny4562 I agree grappling is one of four ranges, every one should have some xp in all ranges of combat.
Who was challenger and who was reigning champ
I wonder was he afraid to open up with Jean Jacques Machado he seemed like he was content to just lay there with his head down and not attempted to pass guard etc
definitely not the most entertaining match but stil cool for the nostalgia
Stalling much?
you dont "open up" to a master like machado...these guys are like pythons with einstein brains!
Remember Jean is fighting with one hand and also hes fighting much heavier fighter and DID NOT GET SUBMITTED. JJM ABSOLUTE FUCKING MENTAL.
RESPECT 🙏
It was supposed to be Lister versus Ricardo Arona, who beat Kerr in the superfight in 2003 and held the superfight title. But Arona was fading by then. JJ was magic in his ADCC showings, except for that Renzo fart, so he was on a short list. That was the year the superfight pattern of having the absolute winner face the superfight champ was broken.
Yup I remember. Was a glorious time
Renzo fart ???? Dude please post your matchs let’s see how good are you .
@@mafia3941 I was actually one of the judges for the fights, so I can assure you that the finals with renzo and jj was not both men going 100 percent. ergo a fart.
