    Elderberries have been one of my favorite plants to grow in my backyard food forest. They are so easy to propagate I end up giving so many cuttings away! Thanks for sharing your method!

    Wow, I grew up on Catalina island CA, I always made elderberry wine, and I've noticed that the elderberrys I harvest wild are always covered in a white whaterphobic powder, very dense clusters. I've never seen any white elderberries farther east, has anyone else? I'm moving to Texas and am considering bringing elderberrys from my home island with me, they make the greatest wine, when I drink it it tastes of home, brings tears to the eye.

      It is probably the native Mexican elderberry, ssp. caerulea.

      I have an elderberry plant that sprouted up wild on it's own next to an avocado tree. San Diego, California. Probably the same kind on Catalina Island. It has blue berries. I have been tasting them and they do not taste good raw. Making them into wine gives me hope that these berries are good for something!

    can you mix elderberries varieties will they cross pollinate or no. I have American elderberry and want to plant black lace? will they cross pollinate for more berries?

    • @chrisstedman4039
      @chrisstedman4039 Před měsícem

      Black Lace is an European variety. American and European varieties can cross pollinate if flowering at the same time but generally they don't flower at the same time.

      @@chrisstedman4039 Thanks I ended buy two Canadian or American elderberries. I wanted to keep that area skewed towards native shrubs and it works better for pollination so the birds get an abundance of berries

    can I cross pollinate american elderberry with another variety? or does it need to be another American elderberry. I am simply planting another elderberry for more berries. What would you suggest for a second elderberry variety?

      Newer cultivars are Lemony Lace and Black Lace, also a dwarf Laced Up with pink flowers. The northeastern specie has chartreuse leaves (perhaps yours?). I have two Lemony Lace I bought in 2020 from family-owned Bluestone Perennials in Ohio - their plants are guaranteed, small but very healthy and take off the third year. In my perennial part-shade garden, Lemony Lace will look like Japanese Maples. A full grown Black Lace is a glory - I plant to purchase one for a sunnier spot. If they get too bushy in a flower bed, they can be pruned back strongly. Hope this is helpful.

    • @Hannah-ds6fx
      @Hannah-ds6fx Před 3 lety +1

      They can grow in the wild. You never eat raw elderberry. They are poisonous if eaten raw(they have some cyanide in them), but if you process them, then you can use it in syrups and whatever else. I’m still researching how to properly process the berries because I wouldn’t mind growing my own.

    • @Appophust
      @Appophust Před rokem

      You don't really understand what "genetically modified" means, do you? Literally any form of selective breeding is genetic modification. Ergo, if your parents planned you, YOU are genetically modified.
