Caged has singlehandedly helped me more than anything in the last year!
My Dad , Lou Pallo, was a very established jazz musician and he always said, play within the chords.

i'd been playing guitar for going on 50 yrs or so when one day my son announced , You're playing the CAGED system , , i had never heard of that , , ha ! he was right and i guess i had just fell into it by my own devices , , it works for me : )

The "realbook"? Haha..they used to call it the "fakebook". I had one once a long time ago, but had no idea what to do with it haha, before I learned the chord symbols.
Yves Klein did very well with 1-color paintings :-)
The real book came about because before the internet, their were fake books for guitarists to fake their way through songs. It was still the Wild West back in the 70âs and early 80s. The old Mel Bay guitar books were about all that was around. We still figured out how to play our favorite songs, it was just harder back then.
I was lucky to have stumbled upon "The Guitar Handbook", the most complete guitar reference ever created before the internet. You should check it out, it's fascinating how much info is in one book.

Personally I like Tom Quayle's interval based system much better than CAGED but to each their own.
They are both different things though, but very compatible!

CAGED is great if you want to sound like a million other clones out there.

Kind of though, because I was able to improvise using the chord shapes instead of bringing it all to a common scale.
