  • Hey guys in this video Ill Show you how I Fixed the door and Wood trim around the door that the dog gad scratched. We used Durhams water putty to repair all the scratches on the trim and door hope this helps anyone with the same problem!

    Thank you so much! I’m going to try to do this. How did you match the paint without having to paint the entire door?

      You would have to take a chip of the old paint into a paint store and they can match it usually it needs to be at least 1 inch by 1 inch for them to be able to match.

      @@BryanBuilt i was thinking of trying to form it with the Elmer’s wood putty first and using this method to top it off , any thoughts on that ?

      @@killforcausetwitchtv622 im not sure but personally wouldnt mix the products just because you never know the reaction of the two products mixed after a long time. But the wood filler would work too i just prefer the durhams because i feel it dries harder

    Great video! Would this work on a wood door that isn't painted white? What would you use on unpainted wood?

      Thanks! I havent tried this stuff on stained wood it says you can stain it but have not tried it myself. I would use stainable wood filler

    What would you reccomend if the door is like natural cherry wood with varnish? because in this case, I can't paint it :(

      I would try a Stainable wood you filler. Minwax has a few options . I would try on a scrap piece of wood try a similar stain until you find the closest match to you wood. Great question !

    How about for a stronger thicker door, like for the backyard?
    Can I still use Durham’s?

      Yeah this should work fine for a thicker door. Ive used this on entry doors and even window sills and painted over them and havent had any issues. The only thing i havent tried on is metal door i dnt think its recimmended fir thise. Also thanks for the heads up on the link!

    Nasty trifling brother in law and his nasty woman were living at my mother in laws and stopped paying bills. I invested money to update her kitchen and installed an island. Because they had to leave due to not paying rent, they destroyed the house, the plumbing and carved up with wood on the side of the island with a knife. It is his mom’s house! They poured grease down every sink and toilet and backed up the system. I will have to repair the side of the island and repaint the entire thing. Just nasty and hateful. I appreciate this tutorial.

      Yes it will work. I would recommend mixing the putty a little thick so it doesnt sag and youll probably have to do a few coats

      Yes it can be used outside as long as its painted. Have used it on exterior door trim that was painted and it held up great

    Just curious, did you not use hot mud because you didn’t want to buy a huge bag of it and the water puddy was more convenient or for some reason that is a better product for the problem?

      I don't like using mud on doors because I've seen it start to crumble and fall off over time. The Water putty dries really hard

    At what point is it better to replace the piece of wood for the trim? I just had Dogs totally trashed one of the doors and trim. I think I can fix the door but the trim looks pretty bad.

      Usually the trim your better off replacing if its something easy to find.

      I would try a stainable wood filler im not sure 100% but i think the durhams is also stainable. I would sand and try to match the stain . Havent done a stained door but thanks for the question i may have to try a stained door !

      For stained wood you would probably need to use wood filler and try to match the stain color

      @@BryanBuilt so I found my color in garage. I decided since I got hair dye on cabinets to sand then stain. Is that the correct way?
      The woodfloor is the scariest thing being ive never done before. Any advice on the hardwood floor or cabinets?

      Yes usually. I would have to see to get a better idea of what it needs. But yeah normally you can sand with a lower grit to remove the old stuff and work your way up higher i usually go 80,120, then 220 on the sandpaper grit. Stain and then gloss if it has gloss.

      I don't think it can be stained. I have never tried. I do see on their website that you can tint it when you mix it
      "Durham’s can be colored by adding a water-based coloring agent to the putty when mixed. Use black to create gray colors. Use a dry powder pigment that you might find at an art supply store"

    This looks like it came out much better, but that job screamed to be block sanded.
    The door wasn't damaged as badly as the trim, and from what I saw the trim area still looked very irregular when you painted it. Why not use an orbital sander on any flat surfaces, and then on the trim, recoat with skim of water putty and final sand? The corner profile 90 was still left low, and it would have hidden all of those pock marks.
