How Toronto Became One of The World's Best Basketball Cities
Vložit

- Canada is a hockey country, but Toronto is quickly becoming a basketball town. The success of the Raptors, an immigrant population and one of the best prep teams in the world has made the 6ix into a basketball factory. In this episode of THE WAY WE BALL, we trace the journey of a few local products, including Jamal Murray’s path from Kitchener to the NBA and the young career of the best middle school basketball player in the world.

No more Lebronto too, kind of! Even better time for Toronto.
Jamal and Jokic are a menace, and Jamal with Lowry too would be good stuff.
He just missed a free throw..15secs left Game 2 vs lakers

Might have mentioned that the creator of Basketball was originally a Canadian and that the First NBA Game was played in Toronto. Awesome story for Toronto and Canada, Good to see Nav included. Sad for Vancouver's loss of the Grizzlies.
He was Canadian yes and although I see a lot of Americans claiming he was American when he invented basketball he wasn't. He had just graduated in Montreal and gone down to the States fora job opportunity (which is where he created the game as a way to keep the kids happy indoors during winter.) He based it on a game he learned as a kid in Canada (they've since found his notes about it.) And he did not become an American till many years AFTER creating the game. Unfortunately, most Americans have wrong info.
@Never mind you’re right We've always claimed it but Americans never heard us. As a kid we had government funded commercials about Canadian Heritage and one of them was of James Naismith creating the sport of basketball
Robert Dru to bro I remember those videos!
@Never mind you’re right You're actually ignorant as fuck. Stop embarrassing yourself and do some research, if your brain even has the capacity. The only thing that changed is that *more* people and *newer* basketball fans across Canada became *aware* of the fact that Canada invented basketball. You just started hearing it more. But the truth remains the truth.
@@silkeotd7194 They are just poorly educated & feel the need to take credit for everything... sad really lol
It's too bad Vancouver lost their team. Canada needs more representation in basketball.
Vancouver needs to have a team back. Montreal should have a team, too. Maybe Calgary as well, eh.
Really bad management cost Vancouver their NBA team !
@@desinaidoo7373 were they hockey owners prior to owning the Grizzlies in Vancouver?
@Tristan Clarke Montreal is a big enough city to have one. You guys had 3 major sports teams: the Alouettes football team, the Expos and the Canadiens. Of course you don't have the Expos anymore. Besides, Montreal is the closest city to Toronto in producing top Canadian players and basketball is quite popular there. You guys have a great elite youth league, the MBL.
@Tristan Clarke well, that's the closest to a major football league you have in your country. Of course, not quite the NFL, but still a great league. I was a child of the 80's (hint at my age😂) and the first time that I watched Warren Moon play was for the Eskimos. I remember Conridge Holloway who quarterbacked for the Aqueducts. He was the first African-American scholarship football player in the SEC conference (Tennessee) and the NFL snubbed him when New England Patriots drafted him in the 7th round to play Wide Receiver, not quarterback. They were not ready for a black quarterback at that time. But the CFL is a very good league. I watch the games on TV since they start before the NFL season.
This is so very timely right now. Congrats new World Champions, Toronto Raptors! 💯💟

They probably said the same about Wiggins trash ass lol
Rj Barret = Left handed Wiggins
RJ has the poise and the killer mentality that Wiggins lacks.
Wiggins is all about money, he's getting paid bare $$$, that's all he wants. No wonder Jimmy wants to leave Minny.
Two years later, Jamal put on a pretty incredible show in the NBA post season with his vast array of circus shots and clutch shooting. Didn't know much about him, but he's appears to be a superstar in the making... really well made and entertaining video...nice work Vice
2 years after that he won a ring and almost won finals mvp
Just remember Steve Nash was the trend setter for Canadian basketball
Before Steve Nash was a trend setter for Canadian Basketball there was Rick Fox the only 3 time canadian NBA Champion ;)
Didn't the Raps try and get him to play for them once?
Before all of them there was another great Canadian named James Naismith, without him the game would have never existed!
Yea, right? Bizarre that Vice just whitewashed him.
@@bloomintokyoseoul Nash was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, to a Welsh mother, Jean, and English father, John, on 7 February 1974.[1][2][3][4] His family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan, when he was 18 months old, before settling in Victoria, British Columbia.[4] He, therefore, holds British as well as Canadian citizenship. Before the family settled in Canada, his father played professional soccer in various parts of the world.[4] Nash often played soccer and ice hockey with his younger brother Martin and did not start playing basketball until he was 12 or 13 years old.[5] In grade eight, however, he told his mother that one day he would play in the NBA and would become a star.[4] He was a neighbour to future NHL stars Russ and Geoff Courtnall, who used to babysit him and played soccer coached by Nash's father.[6]
Probably more so because he wasn't from Toronto or even born in Canada for that matter lol I didn't even know that always assumed he was. He also started late which would have actually been a good thing to point out in this video but whatever...

Feels like VICE has been sitting on this story for half a decade. There was supposed to be some documentary about Wiggins and Canadian bball talent they never released.
Red is Not a Flavor Wiggins hasn’t panned out as well
@@gbrl433 True, but back when VICE was going to release that Documentary Anthony Bennett was picked 1st then Wiggins came soon after. There was a tremendous amount of hype. VICE just never released the documentary.
I think cuz Wiggins never played for team Canada once he hit the state's and Murray always reps...so better to make a documentary with Jamal.
@@damiendolce1081 Wiggins played in the fiba America's Olympic qualifiers in 2015. Canada dominated everyone like the USA but then lost in the semi finals to Venezuela by 1 point. They needed to just make the finals to qualify for the Olympics. And the coach Jay triano benched Wiggins in the 4th. Rumor is triano is the reason Wiggins hasn't returned to Canada basketball since
Toronto is not raising the best b-ball talent. It’s between LA and D.C

Ah bro salute dude. NYC beautiful city too everyone is dope as fuck I've met there can't wait to go back.!

@Ben Mangat Toronto is it's own animal and there's nothing in the world like it. Not even close. But I think he means by Toronto being the second biggest city in North America.

Two, Toronto is still being seen as inferior compared to NY, Chicago and LA. But you guys have done an outstanding job growing your players. I see your city gaining more respect from the American sports media today than 20 years ago. Especially the fact that your Raptors are playing in the Finals. Though I am pulling for Golden State, I'm certainly proud and happy for your team's success. You deserve it.

SUCH A GREAT VID LOVE IT SO GOOD
amazing video! very motivational, and this is just the beginning. WE THE NORTH!!!
While it's fair to point out that the current Canadian players like Wiggins and Thompson aren't playing their best, people need to recognize that Canada's population is 3 million people less than the state of California. This means our talent pool is wayyy smaller than the US, plus hockey is still quite dominant in Canadian culture. They aren't the greatest players in the league, but they've definitely gained recognition in the NBA as well as other Canadians like Nash, Olynyk, Murray and (hopefully) RJ Barrett. We have sometime before we'll have a great team Canada, but we're definitely on the right track to gold.
@Andrew Lee oh ya the yugoslav countries are killing it. They've got a great system for finding and growing young players for euroleague or NBA. My point is that Canada's system is getting better at finding and developing talent - hopefully it will be on par with the yugoslav countries too
@Andrew Lee another factor is we're 3 times bigger but our basketball program can't necessarily accomodate that
36 million but yes less than that of California
I get your point but canada itself is a whole country compared to california, plus you got a lot more diversity and things going in in canada than in just one state. Still out of all the spots available in the nba and Canada being 10% of the population of the states I would say there is some talent but barely any. Naming a few players isnt that impressive and most the players developed outside of toronto anyways so you cant even give credit for canada making actual nba players. Canada just had some insanely talented people that's it.
Growing up I found too much emphasis on that outdated sport hockey that absolutely nobody in the world cares about (any major European hockey nation cares much more about winning at futbol/soccer first) and not being good enough at other sports.
Glad to see basketball getting shine and blowing up.
Jamal Murray going to be an all star soon. Kid has all the talent in the world.
