Here's a breakdown of how you should charge clients in the filmmaking world! Hope this helps!
It helps! Thank you.
Hey Jakob. Thanks for this super informative video. Quick question, if a client wants you to shoot, direct & edit a project. How do you differentiate between this and whether or not they also expect you to produce the video, (hire the makeup artist, location, catering, etc)? I ask this because I worked directly with a musician recently on a music video, and she paid me a rate to direct, DP, and edit the project, while she handled all of the producing and finances on the project. I personally preferred this because I didn't have to spend time either producing myself, (which isn't my speciality), or trying to find and pay a producer to fulfil the role. If a client gives you all of their budget to create a music video, do you produce it yourself or do you instead hire someone to take on all of the production-related tasks? Do you prefer this way of working on a project, (effectively being seen as 'the production company') vs only being hired for certain specific roles? Thanks.🙂
Thanks Very helpfull
What is the name of font you used?
Hi! Just so that I understand. On the part you said $1000 flat day rate for the freelance work, is that ONLY shooting the video? Is editing included in that rate or no?
Great advice here!
Bro you everywhere 😂
Right?! @YCImaging your videos have been very helpful as well. Keep creating,..
You are a legend and if a legend agrees, then this video is legendary
You are a legend and if a legend agrees, then this video is legendary
YC what up brother !
It’s a new year! It’s great advice! Let’s crush it!!!
Thanks for being transparent and sharing Jakob, good stuff. I think some things like 12hr days and an all inclusive day rate as standard varies by geography and industry. I’ve been DP’ing for over 10 years in San Diego and have always charged my day rate based on a 10hr day (OT after 10) and always charge a labor only day rate and then offer my gear as separate line item rentals. In my experience producers expect to deal with labor and equipment as separate line items in their budget, but when working direct to client is when it’s best to add it all up and give them one simple number.
Je
Bro, this was absolutely perfect. Just what I’m needing right now, as I begin the transition from artist/operator to more of a creative agency.
Thanks for all the great content man. Loving how grounded you are, and how concise and genuine your content is.
Subbed 👍🙌🤘
So helpful! As someone who is just starting to charge clients this is super helpful! Especially asking for a budget first - Thanks!!!
Happy new year and THANK YOU for the advice.
Industry Standard Day Rates at 12 hours are true on Film, Music Videos, and TV. However, it is not Industry Standard for Broadcast, Corporate, etc... When I do work for ABC, Disney, CBS, FOX, NBC, etc...it all pays on 10 hour days, with OT after 10.
WOW! You work for Disney, CBS, FOX...? How did you do that?
Which industry you like better? The indie creative one or the corporate news goverment one ?
Thanks a million for this video! You cleared up sooo many issues I was grappling with for months in 10 minutes...
Thank you very much for the video, all the information is very interesting. My best wishes to you in 2021. Regards from Moscow.
you're becoming the best in the industry Ive been watching every video (production and tutorial) for weeks. Some of the best info out here. Thanks for you work, time and information
Perfect timing on this upload!
This is super helpful. Thanks so much for this Jakob!
Perfect video to start off the year!
I really appreciate this breakdown Jakob. Best Advice!
Thank you for these advices 🙏🏾
Happy New Year.
best video to start off the new year
Love learning from Jakob
Knowing your value is 🔑 Thanks for the great advice. Happy New Year!!
Really solid advice here Jakob. I use to freelance, and did a lot of work for PUMA, and now I am a staff video editor for them. When I freelanced for them, I would present flat-rate invoices no matter what, and eventually you get to the point where they like you and what you do, that even if the budgets get bigger, they don't care because they know you make it easy for them, so they would rather give you the money because you make it quick and easy for them, then deal with someone else who will charge less, but makes it a pain by itemizing everything, or just over-complicating stuff. I would say number 1 tip - remember that at the end of the day, all the gate keepers to the work you want to do, they wan't to have a life, and it you make their life easier (even if the result may make your life a little harder at times, especially in the beginning by doing free or low-budget work), they are going to really like you and you will get more work. For sure.
100%
How will clients who you do free work or low budget work really like you and pay you higher. Believe me, you'll always be known as the FREE GUY or LOW BUDGET guy in their mind, they will work with you more, but they'd expect to work only on the level you charged them earlier, free or low budget. Trust me, at least in my country, clients dont have a heart and ethics etc.
Rmbr for NIKE the girl who created their swish logo after the company became famous they rewarded her much more and made her a millionaire for free, even though it was not like she directly catapulted their success, but more in a subtle intangible way. In India, 90% are bottom feeders and ive never heard of a company ever ever doing something like that, they count every penny and are misers. They would have been happy that they paid only $15 for that logo and forgotten about her the moment after she finished her job.
Thank you for the infos! Always very informative, been following you since my beginning in career and it's always very helpful.
This is a great and simple breakdown. Love it.
This info is super accurate, I've been making music videos in 2020 and I've seen how everything you've said here is pretty much how the industry works
This is some solid information. Thank you for putting this together.
Great information bro! Definitely took notes, and I appreciate your transparency. God Bless!

You're my lifesaver!
Thank you jake. I definitely appreciate your hard work put in these videos helpin new film makers. 🙏
Forsure!!
This is the hardest aspect of being a videographer..getting the clients and pricing your work. Cuz the clients im connected too are not huge companies that will spend that much
Very well said sir. Probably one of the most asked questions from those starting out.
thanks!
Thanks Jakob! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Cool! Thanks for putting this together. I've done things very similarly. Although, recently someone asked for an interview package rate sheet which I threw together for simplicity purposes for them. That included a single camera interview and then two camera interview. But for years I've just given my flat day rate and half day rate for various gigs. And, always asking what the client budget is first is always important.
Great tips man! Already using your templates and this will really help as I am starting to freelance full time this year.
Thanks for videos, info, and inspiration.
Thank you! As a beginner in the freelance side this was helpful!

These are the videos that you make that really provide value to not only CZcams but your brand. Thank you man. Thanks for being so willing to give away extremely valuable information. You're a wise man 👍🏻
Thank you, You made it very clear. Much appreciated.
Solid Info!
Crazy been watching a lot of videos about this , this week
This is great advice here, much of which I wish I had when I started. Often times clients don't know what goes into the editing/ post production process, and I've learned the hard way that the flat fee is the way to go
Thanks a lot dude this was very helpful 🙏🏻
Thanks for this info! And thanks for all the content you create! Decided to make a youtube channel because of inspiration from creators like you! Appreciate it! 🙏🏽

All I can say is just THANKS!
Very informative 👍
Aaaah thank you for this, I will actually apply this to my music production 🔥🔥I appreciate you dawg for this 🔥🔥🔥
no problem
The 75% up front is very good! I've been taking only 50% up front and before that 0% up front which totally sucked because people would bail and I'd have to go out of pocket to rent gear or hire someone, which I usually had no money anyway so I had to make do with what I had available. Sure, it gave me some experience but all in all wasn't good. This info is super solid, thanks!
Hows the 50/50 going though?
@@TheFunnyCamGuyGreat, I'd never considered more than 50% because I wasn't aware that there was a standard but I love that. My clients (currently) don't typically have big budgets although I'd like that to change. No one has had an issue with it and it makes me feel way better about the job, I don't mind all the back and forth conversation about the project prior to shooting or whatever but it does suck when you put all this mental energy into it and the cancel on you. This way you at least got something for your time. My deposits are non-refundable as I'd imagine most are. So, it's security. 75% sounds fucking way better though.
@@cookingwithmicah5k Thanks! I just started to do 50% up front and i like it but might switch the the 75% eventually. It really does suck when they cancel or try to go about things differently. I only did refunds on the deposit if i was the one who had to cancel or if the client really had a good reason to cancel/reschedule.
@@TheFunnyCamGuy Yeah exactly and to be honest I think it legitimizes us more as well
Appreciate the great info!!
Great info! Thank you
Thanks Jacob, Highly Insightful, Please do more. 🙌🏽
will do
Greta info, the pricing part of freelancing can be confusing and scary sometimes, but keeping it simple always works 👌
Great info thanks !
Really helpful comments, this is a topic that always is hard to understand and find out when we are starting, thanks a lot. all the best
:)
Great video! Thank you!!
Hey guys it worked for me. Big time!!! I just Shot my first Mega Star with a clothing brand. This brother changed my life
Great advice. Thanks. Sometimes it’s so difficult to simplify and still get what your worth.
true
Thank You, Very Helpful!
Nice advice ❣️🎬
Man this is great info! I gave a client a break down of everything in an invoice and they emailed back and said please just send us a solid number
I'm really glad you touched on the hourly vs flat rate. I have seen tons of videos explaining that charging hourly for editing is super common practice and a good way to go. But I have always felt exactly how you described- how does the client know you spent x hours, included hours you didn't even work, or know if you're a fast/slow editor? They don't. Seems like and agreed-upon flat-rate would just be easier overall and be more ideal for both parties.
Thanks for the advice!
Great advice man! 👍🏻👍🏻
The BuffNerds gonna hit a million subs this year
I hope
Thank you, this helped alot!
Great advice, started a media company last year and was ready to invest etc then covid happen so its been put on hold. So 2021 is back on, the plan i had was work that I approached clients with was free as I'm building up a client base, getting my reel sorted etc, any of those clients that recommend me and they get in contact with me then that would be charged.
Like I said it was working ha until, well covid so been spending the down time crafting my skill.
Will def be putting these tips to good use once we get out of this trying time.
Happy new year to you!
Rates just went up
Bro I feel that way every time I watch a video like this
I did.. and it worked for me.
Thanks for this brotha
