I have been painting warhammer for years, but never before I have actually painted an ARMY. Well, at least started one. Today, I'm starting my first army-sisters of battle. Lets talk about why I chose to start with this new kill team, go over painting using army painter speed paints, and how i will change painting my next army in the future.

The most important phrase that came out of your mouth was, I don't like the colour scheme so I adapted my own, or something similar. It is the most important part of painting minis, there is no iron bound rule that says you must follow the box art. It was good to see your natural creativity kick in. The other thing is, you made it sound like there were rules to painting an army. There aren't. People apply techniques to painting an army because if you have 70 miniatures, you will burn out spending 15 hours blending on each model. Finally the fact that you were not frightened to critique you work and do it again is stellar.

Not liking my paint schemes and also getting distracted when trying to match an older scheme happens a lot to me. I find taking color scheme notes helps when trying to match your older paint schemes. I have a notepad full of scheme details/info that I wrote down from every army paint session I've completed (and liked, most important part). That way I can go back to my notes and use some of the same colors or techniques so things match more cohesively. It's not always necessary, but can be helpful. Sometimes I'll just tell myself that this is a sub-faction of my army and that's why they don't need to match 1:1. However that is more an excuse then a reason ;) Love the vid, happy you joined the bandwagon, I love hearing about new perspectives/opinions in this hobby, keep them coming.

Absolutely been there when coming up with a scheme.
Now I take one model from the box, and basically make it parade ready.
If I don’t like it I strip it and will go do something else while I workshop the design.
If I do like it, then it’s basically the reference for the rest of the army!

What you describe at the end is many a painters experience with their first army. Painting indivudal models is cool, but making it so you can a) visually differentiate squads and b) still have the whole army look unified is always a challenge the first time out. Especially if you are not going with a canonical paint scheme.

Novitiates were my first Kill Team and are still my favorite to play. When trying to decide which team to start with I took my daughter with me to the game store and had her help me pick out which team I should play. As soon as she saw that the Novitiates were an all-girl squad that was the team she insisted I get. I went with Order of the Sacred Rose for my color/chapter scheme as my daughter's name is Arabella and they are dedicated to Saint Arabella.
Edit: If/when you do decide to play Kill Team make sure you look at your chosen team's rules before you assemble your team. Since each individual's loadout is so crucial you'll want to make sure you have the specialists you need, otherwise your team will be severely underpowered and you won't get to do all of the cool things your team is good at. Unlike 40k proper each individual model in Kill Team is special and you really need to build to your team's strengths!
Also, thanks for the great video! It's always nice to see both great tips and to see that you weren't happy with your (very good) end result. Too many hobby YT'ers don't show the reality that we all face in this hobby when we put work in to something and, even if it might look good, it isn't what we were really hoping for.

Minis that are painted well, you have minis that are painted well. They may not match your original vision, but nailed the execution. I think if you put them in a scene, particularly something dark, lit by candles or fire, you might see this paint job a little differently. There is a moody feel to the colors on the armor and leather, as if they are walking through a dimly lit church. Built in OSL without even trying!

Altering a units' colors for identification is tricky buisness and there is a definite experimentation process to get it right to your own satisfaction. It is a Victory by all stretches of being satisfied with an army (or individual mini) that represents your taste/style/esthetic.

    @lucidity1 Před 8 dny

oh yeah, my army has a set of not-so-great fire warriors, pathfinders, and stealth suits. I took the 9th edition combat patrol as my opportunity to redo these. Instead of forcing a Viorla-esque paint scheme across all of my army, stealth units would now be black with a dark blue dry brush and blue edge highlighting. you should see how the Ghostkeel and Shadowsun came out after redoing the stealth suits.
for the Firewarriors I decided on white speed paints from Army Painter for a grey wash color instead of Agrax earth shade, I liked it so much that I bought the Pathfinder Kill Team and redid those the same way.
sometimes you just have to try a few things until you find what you like most and what works best, for an entire army...

It sucks, but its important to draw the right conclusions and learning and i'm very happy you feel confident enough to share your personal hobby journey. Lots of others would have pushed ahead, just to finish a video and throw these minis into a corner never to be seen again.
I still have a few of these minis painted, some only need an adjustment of their highlights (which i thankfully can do in only like 10 mins working time per model, the rest is okay), but another group will be stripped completely and restarted because i want that blank slate.

Noob's 2 cents here: From someone who paints armies, but way back when, came from role-playing games.
I believe you will find, despite that you are painting an army, that you are still creating a story. You are right in pursuing a color scheme that inspires you over box art, though it was a very noble attempt. If you consider, maybe, that 5 figures deep, 10 figures deep, on and on, if you are going to go out and learn a thing to play with so much there, you need your story, and your journey to enjoy along the way. The result will come. OH, and as another CZcamsr and X-GW painter said (Peachy), a test model goes a long way, although you sort of seem to have these, already. And great video, as always!!!

Its always finding the balance right? Where to draw the line... We're always our own worst critics.
I often let the my quality drift a bit in order to get more done - they aren't going to be contest pieces, and they're gonna face a rough time on the wartable. Out there in gameland - it's great to see anything even painted with more than just 2 colors or even some kind of basing. You are very skilled so people will be floored by your work. I feel yah though, similar color themes are cathartic, but a few corrections, or even subtle additions (an armband here, belt there, with those army colors) will help bring anything back into the fold. I think its good to have a bit of variation though - it helps tell units apart among many similar ones.
I play da' orkie boyz. Red blue black yellow lol throw it all in. s'all good with lots o dakka anyhow. Find your balance - in your mind, are these game piece quality, or contest? What's your in-between? Go in with the goal, and you'll hit it, maybe exceed it, but if you end up wanting to move onto the next unit, you can just call it good at the goalpost.

I remember painting my Sisters with white armor, gold details, and purple cloth. Which was… a mistake, needless to say. I’m not skilled enough to handle a primarily white color scheme, so I struggled making it look more detailed and not flat. Eventually I just stripped it all and am doing a night blue scheme. It happens with armies! You gotta learn what you actually like seeing dozens of.
And then you have Orks where it’s appropriate to have each one be a mishmash of colors and painting techniques.

You are a much better painter than me, but skill doesn't help when you break the very first rules of army painting: Do a test model, where you aren't just testing the scheme, but the mechanics of its application. You ended up spending a whole lot of time, with a hard to execute set of steps, all to end up with a scheme you didn't like!
Sacrifice just one sister to getting all the extra makeovers, and then, once you are actually happy, just paint the unit with well tested, easy to execute recipes. This works just as well when painting something with just 1 or two recipes, like some Ultramarines, or something that needs a bunch of different elements, like Death Guard and its tentacles, faces in pauldrons, flies, smoke, pus, plague weapons... The sisters are somewhere in between.

I have a similar experience. When I first thought of collecting tyranids I wanted to include red in the scheme. So I did some test models and instead settled for the classic white and purple, because on an individual model it looked good. So I painted a whole box of Termagaunts in that scheme just to find out that if there is a whole squad I find the scheme boring 🤷‍♂ Now I am back at a red scheme.

Hi! This is the video I was waiting for. I have an still unpainted Blood Bowl Nun Team that I bought years ago. I didn’t paint them for I didn’t know how to do the black clothes. And here is your solution. Don’t paint them black. I like the idea… For the Star Players only. So, can you do a video with a mini with black clothing so I can watch and learn? And … thumbs up for the cat!

you will to get used to slightly relaxing your standards with non-officer minis, sure the battle lines at full detail glory look amazing, but in a sea of 50 or worse yet 100 at arms length, nobody will see it and the carpal tunnel is permanent. and the lesson of examining the first mini under a new scheme as a "test" to be closely examined when done can help a lot with later efforts, i.e. did this but can barely see it when done so it might not be worth it. keep at it and enjoy the bliss that is the hobby.....most days

Black armor is so hard to get right im doing sisters and im super duper stoked with the robes(OML) and have been but the black armor is always so damn hard to get looking right. Ive tried a couple of recipes from online with a brush hated the look, tried basing black airbrush highlighting with
white ink and then doing a gravelords grey contrast followed by a wash (nuln oil)then high lighting with a grey(works well on the sisters but the paragon warsuits steeple looks terrible and sometimes it just reads as grey armor for the sisters. Im still bummed with how it looks. I just want a cool black armor that is black and you can still read all the features without going super cartoony with bold edge highlights.

When I paint something and at the end I don't like it or with time my taste changed, I prefer to trade 1 for 1 with a person that I play with (often they don't want to pay) so I get new characters and they get something painted that they like. Win win

I think the first scheme does look good and reminds me of fighting in a desert/arid environment. However, I totally get you not liking how they'll look with the rest of the collection

Even if it's just an army, it's good to bring it to a standard you're happy with. You're the one who has to stare at them 99% of the time. It's not worth having an ugly annoyance on the shelf.

Lyla would you ever be willing to paint some Battletech mecha?😅
You made a video that showed how to panel line using water tension to draw the ink into the creases....ive looked and looked but i cant find that video.....
    Anyone got the link?

  • @heathandkentyvapevarietysh1402

Ah but the Novitiates aren't really kill team/40k interchangeable.
In 40k there's 2 loadouts you can use for the novitiates and superior.
If you set that up, then you can't really use the kill team load outs.
But if you use the kill team loadouts as makeshift characters, you may have a tiny bit more versatility.
