  • Lawmakers in Gambia referred an attempted repeal of the 2015 ban on female genital cutting for further committee discussions on Monday, March 18. Gambian activists fear a repeal would overturn years of work to better protect girls and women. The legislation was referred to a national committee for further debate and could return to a vote in the weeks ahead. As Gambia lawmakers consider a repeal of the ban, under heavy pressure from powerful religious leaders, FRANCE 24's Nadia Massih is joined by renowned Gambian activist Jaha Dukureh, Regional UN Women Ambassador for Africa and CEO/Founder of the NGO “Safe Hands for Girls” providing support to African women and girls who are survivors of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Learn the difference between male and female circumcision. It's not the same.

Jaha dukureh I have went through Female circumcision and nothing absolutely happened to me. Mind you not only me but my family members, friends, and we all had our kids Alhamdullilah with zero complications. What these people are asking for is simple, they’re not saying everyone should do it By force, it’s only a choice to practice it or not to. By the way you have live in the west, no doubt you have seen transgender people changing their private parts from male to female that’s not an issue and we all know that is way far complicated than circumcision. You and your entourage should spare us with the double standards. You have been advocating the trauma you went through but that shouldn’t determine our choices in our lives. One last thing if you and sister were mutilated that doesn’t determine same thing was done to us, we were circumcised not mutilated!

Thats fine but genital mutilation for minors is now manditory. Meaning if your kid wants to you either support it or lose your child. The left is censoring any dissent. Where are men on that one? Hmmmm

We will repeal it none will imposed he or her ideology on us. Female circumcision is not only our culture but the teaching of our religion. My sister not fabricating lies against our religious belief.
