How to quilt an overall swirl using Full Line Stencil and the Pounce Pad

  • When you start free motion quilting, you are told to just do an all over meander, keep everything curvy and don't overlap your lines. It sounds easy to someone who has been quilting for a while. But to a true beginner, that can be very intimidating.
    In today's tutorial I show you how to use stencils as a guide to learn and master the overall swirl. Once you have got the muscle memory down and have practiced moving throughout the quilt creating an even quilting texture, you can ditch the stencil and start getting creative.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I've been quilting for about a year since my retirement. I have tried FMQ a few times with no luck, what a mess. My long-arm quilter said I was doing a great job with my quilts, but she said FMQ is a lot harder than most of the videos show. I came across this video and I'm sooo happy I did! You explain everything in detail and take your to show the steps. I'll be getting my Pounce and stencils from you.

    I'm so glad I found this! I have four quilts ready for this stage and have been completely stumped as to how to create a design I might actually be able to sew! I'm heading over to your shop to check out the stencils, so I can practice and maybe finish a few quilts before Christmas! Thank you so much for sharing this!

    Thank you so much for this detailed tutorial. I am new to quilting and want to do my own quilting after piecing so I can say to myself an entire quilt is my own work. I am definitely going to order the supplies from you to be able to go beyond straight line quilting. I have tried free motion and it was a disaster on my practice sandwiches! Thank you for showing how to use the stencils!!

      Try something bigger like a baby quilt. It is easier than small size. Baste with big stitches and get rid of pins. Check it is good on back and then go for it.

    Is a quilting mat useful or needed, I didn't see you using one so was curious as to whether they were or if it was a personal preference. Your tutorials are really helpful, I just finished a quilt for my daughter and I would really like to quilt it myself so have been avidly watching your FMQ tutorials and they have really inspired me.

    • @QuiltAddictsAnonymous
      @QuiltAddictsAnonymous  Před 3 lety

      That sounds amazing! I would definitely practice on some scraps first to get the hang of the stitch before you do it on the real deal. I know some quilters swear by mats to help everything slide, but I've never used one.

    Great tutorial! I would like to know what you do when the stencil pattern runs off the side?

    • @QuiltAddictsAnonymous
      @QuiltAddictsAnonymous  Před 5 lety +1

      Just quilt to the edge and pick of the line again. You won’t see you jogging around because that happens off of the quilt.

    • @leslieharrington2287
      @leslieharrington2287 Před 5 lety

      Quilt Addicts Anonymous I have only FMQed 4 quilts and wasn’t sure if there were “rules” about keeping the quilting inside the binding area.

    • @QuiltAddictsAnonymous
      @QuiltAddictsAnonymous  Před 5 lety +2

      Leslie Harrington not at all! That is why you have extra space around the top. That way you can easily quilt right off the side and then come back on again when doing an all over design like this one.

    • @QuiltAddictsAnonymous
      @QuiltAddictsAnonymous  Před 2 lety

      What color chalk are you using? The best option would be to change the chalk color to either pink or blue. Both can be found here: shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.com/product-category/notions/free-motion-quilting/?orderby=popularity

    Is there anyway to use one of the stencils that you have without pounce powder?

    • @QuiltAddictsAnonymous
      @QuiltAddictsAnonymous  Před 4 lety

      No, they can be used with other stencils, but you need to pounce pad to mark this kind of stencil.

  • @KarenRothstein

    I'm so grateful I found your channel. When you are using stencils on a regular sized quilt, do you still start in the middle?

  • @judyyoung5952
    @judyyoung5952 Před 5 lety +1

    Please pin, baste or otherwise secure your sandwich layers. It will reduce the bunching you are having to constantly fight. Otherwise, good demo. Your instructions have inspired me to use these tools.

    • @QuiltAddictsAnonymous
      @QuiltAddictsAnonymous  Před 5 lety

      For big projects I baste, but for the little ones I usually skip it. I am glad you want to give the stencils a try.

    I assume that you are using spray baste. Do any of you have a favorite brand? Have any of you made a homemade version that you like?

    What is the name of that blue paper?

    • @QuiltAddictsAnonymous
      @QuiltAddictsAnonymous  Před 3 lety

      It is from Full Line Stencil. It is similar to what is used for screen printing.

  • @stoptheinsanity
    @stoptheinsanity Před 2 lety

    Why do you start at the edge as opposed to the middle?

    • @QuiltAddictsAnonymous
      @QuiltAddictsAnonymous  Před 2 lety

      This is just a sample piece, but since this in an all over design, you would quilt it edge to edge down the center of the quilt and work your way out if you are on a home sewing machine.
