    If that were my foundation I'd have a stroke when you started whacking it with that axe. So many tv news reports of scammers that start a job like that and the 'contractor' realizes he's in over his head and walks away and leaves a mess and there's no Mike Haduck locally to save the day.

    The axe is brilliant. Most guys would haul out an angle grinder and spit dust all over the place which would annoy the homeowner, the neighbors, and be a PITA to clean up. Naturally, power tools make a lot of jobs easier, but I'm like you in that I'm fine with doing stuff by hand in a lot of cases. When you're doing projects for yourself and not on the clock for someone else, sometimes old school is more rewarding. Thanks again Mike, for sharing your experience and expertise.

    Mike, I've noticed that those fast-setting cement patching products like Sakrete and Quickrete, etc crumble and fall apart after a few winters whereas old fashioned plain portland cement or even ready-mix doesn't. They turn into sand and fall off the wall. Have you seen this? Do you know what's happening.

    I've got a porch project 8ftx6ft pad lots of water damage and freeze damage to the front porch of my 100yr old home so I removed most of the large pieces dug down about 2ft leveled it up with large slag and course sand then layed in a metal mesh added high strength concrete and put the pieces back, theyve been setting up for about 25 days so far haven't put anything else on it but it has rained here for 6 days.i will reinstall the 6x6 posts at the ends of the porch to hold up the porch roof it's not that heavy till it snows.i was going to reinforce the pad by drilling 1inch holes in sideways and installing re bar to connect the peices then do the same to the pad drill about 10 holes and add rebar.with more high strength concrete on top with a good binder agent in the mix or do you think I'm going overboard with this .....I live in ohio.....wish there was a way to send you a picture.

    I can't lift 100 lbs bags of cement so I am trying to get 59 lbs bags, but I can only find in one store and they only sell white. I don't want the white look and will probably add a little color such as a light sandstone or light gray colorant. If I try to hos that down with a light coloring, do you think it will run or get splotches in a very noticeable way? I'm really not that fussy, but then I don't want an unsightly mess, either. After spending a week or mor scraping the paint on one side of the house, and I'm still not done, I probably won't paint over it with Drylok when I'm done coating it with cement or whatever (unless you think I should), so the cement color will show.

    • @MikeHaduck
      @MikeHaduck  Před 11 měsíci

      Hi Exeter, cement fades and changes colors naturally, I almost never add colors unless I am trying to match a stucco or brick joint. I would do some experiments first, or start at a place no one sees. It takes a few days to really see how it will look, thanks Mike

    Really enjoy your stuff Mike keep it up. I'm a handyman and work with concrete three or four times a month. Wondering why you go to so much trouble to mix instead of using the rapid set. Seems like if you use the rapid set stucco repair or masonry mix you might bang it out faster and I found it to be incredibly strong but since I've only used it for a few years not sure how long it lasts but I have a feeling it's going to make it 50 or 100 years :-)

      @@MikeHaduck I learned of it last year, use it regular now, on 1 job, re-pointing some brick work I used Ty S and that only, smeared it all over the wall to fill the irregular depths nice and figured i would just come back a cpl days later and sponge the face of the glossy bricks and it would come right off, nope, after several abrasive pads with angle grinder I got most of it off, was an experience! needless to say I use a different mix and strategy for pointing now, mostly Ty S w/ some thinset, spreads in those joints like butter w. the thinset addition.

    Mike. Unrelated question. If you pour gravel and encounter God stone rocks, would you incorporate it into the gravel, cement, use it along the boarder or discard it?

      Hi Jay , I am not sure I understand the question, Mike

    I'm confused about stucco. I have a 150 yr old house and the stucco is breaking/buckling next to the driveway. I keep hearing about weep screeds to let moisture out but also heard those are relatively new (1980's) So should I put in a weep screed or just patch it up? Almost afraid to start in case I reveal a total mess underneath I can't do or afford. Was quoted 30,000 to redo the whole house. No one calls back unless it's to EIF the entire house. Frustrating.

      Hi Todd, yea, the old schoolers never heard of weep screen, 90% of the buildings I repair I just patch them up and paint them, thanks mike

    Hey Mike,
    With that horizontal crack, how are you sure the base of the stair foundation wasn't the part moving? I'm just curious, always heard those types of cracks are bad news.

      Hi Brian, unless the wall is caved in which is extremely rate a crack is a crack and every foundation I came across has them, rarely its a big deal, thanks Mike
