    Lifesaver. I had EVERYTHING enabled but kept getting that "contact admin" message. I searched everywhere online but all I got was "you need to enable Publish to Web" and i did that. But your pointer to change the setting to "allow existing and new codes" saved me. Worked just as showed. Really helpful that you showed you got the same "contact admin" message before but then changed that one setting and it worked. Good job.

    Would this work as a workaround distributing reports to users in an organisation e.g. if it was embedded on company Sharepoint users with access to the SharePoint can view and interact with the report but it would not be viewable to anyone outside the organisation? I have a Pro license and can only share with other Pro users, so thinking this might save on having to upgrade to Premium. Thanks :)

    Brandon, thank you very much for this. I'm a former actuary, mid-fifties, never was part of the tech wave so I didn't learn sufficient web skills to build my own websites so I lack confidence in that area. Several years ago I devised an idea for a new form of Democracy and it's been plaguing me ever since. I simply have to show it to the world. I could easily create an Excel spreadsheet to explain the concept, but how could I get it online so other people can grasp the concept? This video is a huge help.

    Hi Brandon.
    Thanks for sharing this amazing knowledge.
    Why do we need a domain to publish power bi to web, while we can register a MS365 enterprise trial account. In your tutorial to setup a MS365 enterprise trial account, i noticed that when MS365 enterprise trial account expires, we can still using power bi service. We can still login into MS365 admin using .onmicrosoft account instead of our own domain account, isnt it?
    So basically i dont understand why we need to setup our own domain, will it affect our service when trial expired?
    Look forward to hear from you.

    • @BrandonMichals
      @BrandonMichals  Před 9 měsíci

      Yes, you're correct--you don't need a domain to publish to the web. I don't know if the Microsoft 365 enterprise trial was available when I made this video, but if it was, I wasn't aware of it. I found out about it later and made this video that explains how to set up the MS365 E3 trial: czcams.com/video/Eyz7Pod_MgI/video.htmlsi=wxU4iSnBgh5keQmn .

      Thank you, glad you liked the video! When you use the Power BI free account publish to web option, the report is publicly available, which means Google can even index it. Also, please read the Microsoft disclaimer carefully--it says that Microsoft has the right to display your report on a public website or public gallery.
      If you want to embed a report containing company data and you want users without a Power BI subscription to view the report, you should look into the Power BI Embedded capacity.

      As a free user, you can only open reports created by another person if: 1) the person shared the report using the "publish to web" option, or 2) the person has a premium license (premium capacity or premium per user). The method I showed in this video is method #1 because that's the only truly free option on both sides (i.e., creator and viewer).

Do you know any other way to share a report with someone who doesn't have q license?

    • @BrandonMichals
      @BrandonMichals  Před rokem

      You're correct, if you choose "Publish to web (public)", Google can index the report, and if you read the terms of use, Microsoft even reserves the right to publish it in their gallery if they want to.
      The two official ways to share a report with someone who doesn't have a license are to purchase 1) a Premium capacity subscription (this is different than a Premium-per-user license) or 2) an Embedded capacity subscription.
      There's also at least one third-party service that allows you to share your report with users who don't have Power BI licenses. It's not free, but it's cheaper than the above two options. I haven't used it myself, so I don't want to recommend or mention it here, but if you do some searching, you should be able to find it.
      Please let me know if that helps.

      However, in an old Power BI Community post, community.powerbi.com/t5/Power-Query/Scheduled-daily-refresh-for-free-users/m-p/142112 , the Microsoft moderator says it's possible to do a scheduled refresh with a free account.

    • @BrandonMichals

      It's possible that Microsoft has slightly different options available based on geographic location. Where are you located?
      Also, when you click the gear icon in the upper-right of the Power BI Service (i.e., powerbi.com), do you have an option named "Admin portal"? If so, when you go to the Admin portal, what are the first few tabs you see? It should be "Tenant settings", "Usage metrics", "Users" etc.

      To share with a free user, you need to use the "Publish To Web" option. That does *not* require viewers to have a Power BI Pro account. All of the steps to do that are contained in the video.

      When you're on powerbi.com (i.e., the "Power BI Service"), if you click the gear icon in the upper right, you should see an option for "Admin Portal". Once you click on that, near the top of the Admin Portal page, you should see "Tenant Settings". If you don't see either the "Admin Portal" or "Tenant Settings", then you are not logged in as an administrator. You would need to use an account with administrator privileges.

      "Microsoft changed the signup process after I created the video. However, you can still get a free business email and use the Power BI Service. Choose the Office 365 E3 Trial, go through the signup, but stop once you get to the payment info page--don't enter any payment info. At that point, you will have already set up your @onmicrosoft.com address, so just go to app.powerbi.com/. There, you will be able to log in and use the Power BI Service."

    • @BrandonMichals
      @BrandonMichals  Před rokem

      If you have a Power BI free account, on the Power BI service (powerbi.com), you can go to File->Embed report->Publish to web (public), and that will give you a URL for your report that you can send in an email or publish to a website. (I show that in this video.)
      If you don't see that option, you need to go to the Admin Portal (gear icon in the upper right), then choose Tenant settings->Export and sharing settings->Publish to web, and make sure 1) the toggle is set to "Enabled" and 2) the "Allow existing and new codes" radio button is selected. (Also shown in this video).
      If you don't have access to the Admin portal or don't see the "Tenant settings" tab in the Admin portal, you are not the admin for your tenant. You would need to ask the admin for your tenant to change the setting for you.
      As an alternative, you can create a separate free account by following the steps in this video: czcams.com/video/Eyz7Pod_MgI/video.html . (See my responses to the comments in that video for important changes to Microsoft's signup process.)
