Frame By Frame: Isolated rhythm and backing tracks

  • Yet another glimpse into the inner workings of Frame By Frame from the Discipline recording sessions in May 1981. By stripping away the principal guitars, DGM engineer, Alex "Stormy" Mundy reveals a fascinating alternative world lurking below the surface of Frame By Frame. Driven along by Stick and drums, we quickly encounter Adrian Belew’s sunny tape looped vocals, the yearning harmony provided by Tony’s backing vocal and, lines and chords from the Roland keyboard played by Fripp. The subtle interaction of all these elements when meshed with the main guitar motifs is easily overlooked. Here, however thanks to Stormy's ministrations the piece presented in this manner could almost be a completely different song. For hard core fans of this line-up it's wonderful to be able to hear the construction process of one of this incarnation's most notable tracks.

      As a musician, I must agree with@Wadsmitter on this one, as a real musician would never actually say "as a musician" at any point in life, its soooo lame... and why do you feel the need to qualify your opinion with "as a musician"? Just say it, no need for credentials, this isnt college registration, junior!
      You must strive to come up with better adjectives and angles from which to come from with your opinions... like "As a professional Bass Fisherman..." or "As a computer software engineer"..." or " As a leading expert on lying..." or "As a guy that over compensates for having a small penis by acting like a guy who claims he has musical talent..."
      Do we all understand?

    Wow, this actually makes me appreciate the original track even more. Those vocal harmonies and loops sound amazing and it's great hearing that red hot rhythm section in isolation. I don't think I'll ever listen to the song the same way again. What was great about this incarnation of KC was the interlocking of all those layers and how they made the complex simple and the simple sound complex.

    For me, the most genius thing about Frame By Frame is that without all of this (so just the guitars), it sounds like you're hearing two completely unrelated instances of music next to each other. The speed, feel, harmonies, rhythms, and time signatures are completely different; so they only match in key. It makes no sense to associate them with each other until Robert and Adrian go to the verse section in perfect unison, and you realise that the only way they could have done that was by preparing for it from the beginning.

    Funny. We were listening to this tape when we drove from Cincinnati to San Francisco in 1981 for the first and final time (we never went back), we were out in the big sky country (Wyoming, or Montana - they blend into one) and this song comes on and suddenly, off to our right, there is this freight train tearing ass, headed west. I was driving as fast as I could to keep up with it and this song provided the perfect soundtrack. Especially the opening guitar lines. I remember Adrian. He was from Covington, Ky. I grew up a few miles away. I used to go to Shipley's in Cincinnati to see him and his band, The Bears. All of his drum tracks were coming off a reel-to-reel tape deck. Adrian is a funny, nice guy. Next thing I knew, he was onstage with the Talking Heads in Toronto in 1980. (My jaw dropped - I only expected to see David, Tina, Chris and Jerry. I was lucky to work with Bernie Worrell back in 1990. Another very nice, very funny man. He had to have a constant joint, but that was no problem).

      Because they are sycophantic fan bois that can't be objective. As a drummer, I can tell you it's not terribly difficult to play, or learn to play. However, what Buford lacked in technical brilliance, he more than made up for in inventiveness. Most drummers wouldn't have thought of this rhythmic pattern, and does it ever work. This album is a masterpiece, IMO. Check out "sheltering sky" for another example of a fairly simple rhythm that's just genius in how perfectly it fits.

    • @hubbsllc
      @hubbsllc Před 11 měsíci

      I don’t really know what “technicality” means but I can speak to what’s going on here. For DISCIPLINE Bill has pretty much junked riding on hi-hat or cymbals. So instead what you hear start up at 0:38 is left hand on snare and right hand on gonbops (similar to Tama’s Octabans which would come later) in a mixed single-/double-stroke pattern, with accents in the snare on the three and the “ee” of the bar instead of the two and the four. As far as sheer technique goes, though - in the intro listen to how clean and even those rolls are being played on those tabletop-hard Simmons pads.

      Check out the surround mixes! If you drag the tracks into a daw like pro tools or even audacity, you can solo certain tracks on each song. Sometimes there are multiple instruments in certain tracks, but others, like Tony's bass, tend to live in their own track on the surround mix(:

    I wonder if Bill ever told Fripp to get that ****en smirk off of his face. Or more likely how many times he had to do that.

    1:10, it reminds me of the synth and organ pad that was used on National Health's first part of "The Bryden 2-Step (For Amphibians)"!

    Unfortunately the Simmons drums are missing here. All you can hear of them is the "clacking" noise in the overheads when Bill Bruford does the fills. Oops..!
