Something simpler from the book Soccer IQ. Great players ask three questions at any time during play that make them more aware during the flow of play...both defensively and offensively. 1) What if?..2) What do I do next?..3) What is happening behind me? Many times, if you can answer these three questions you will be that much more aware on the field and have an advantage over other players.

Scanning and observing the pitch is a key trait and one that can be easily forgotten, awareness is developed through playing the game simply, it's experience so playing and studying the game often is the best factor.
It can be enhanced by coaches helping paint pictures through drills as Frank and others will use or more small sided free flowing games with problem solving, neither right or wrong but both can only enhance awareness.

Eventually you don't even need to look for your teammates you'll know where they should be and it becomes instinct it's like playing blind in a way pure instinct and you'll feel like you have hours on the ball instead of freezing on the pitch looking stupid

The most common misunderstanding among young players is that they think only individual skills and performance matters nothing to do about awareness and team play isn't important always forgetting football is team sport
