#1960s #christmas #oldies
Love it or Hate it. Christmas music is huge part of our nostalgia and the holidays between Thanksgiving and New Years. And nothing says Christmas music like Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Brenda Lee and Johnny Mathis. The classics if you will, next up I share some of my favorite Christmas songs and we hear directly from one of the greatest voices in popular music history Johnny Mathis about his magical Christmas recordings
Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock , always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time; Click the subscribe button below, to be in the know about our daily content .also check us out on patreon where we release exclusives every week.
Christmas music is a constant in a world of change. Every year we hear it whether we like it or not. Look I get it. I get tired of certain songs that will remain nameless. I actually have so many great memories from that song, So i’ve nothing bad to say about it. I have to admit that there’s a special place in hell for this song. And then there’s this one that if someone even mentions the song title, it’s stuck in my head for weeks. I’ve also gained a special loathing for this song that i’ve sung with my wife for a party many years ago and we’ve been asked many times to perform since and we hate.
I do have a place in my heart for certain Christmas music though. Nat King Cole’s the Christmas song is such a magical and nostalgic piece of music and it always resonates with my soul. I’m also partial to Bing Crosby’s White Christmas, and I love the Carpenters Christmas album. Karen Carpenter has a voice of pure gold. I’m very much a traditionalist when it comes to Christmas Music, Which is why very excited to share a part of an interview I did with one of my favorite voices ever. especially at Christmas time, Mr. Johnny Mathis. I’ve had the honor of interviewing Mr. Mathis several times.
He is simply one of the kindest, most elegant, humble individuals I’ve ever talked with. He’s like royalty. He’s one of the biggest selling artists of all time. He’s one of the last of the greats of the fifties that is still living, His platinum voice is just stunning. The sound of innocence and grandeur. He is one of those classic voices of Christmas past, Like Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby, His voice is a reminder of those magical moments we had as children, counting the days until Christmas morning. the excitement of Christmas lights, decorating the tree, making out our lists for Santa, watching the rankin/bass specials like Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer and Charlie Brown Christmas. We all have those special Christmas memories, - Zábava
Kindness proceeds the genius. Mr. Mathis is an example of true humility and a kind gentlemen - so missing in the current entertainment climate. I was fortunate to travel with him on a flight from Las Vegas to L.A. He was kind, reserve and gracious. A true product of his family and healthy childhood environment. We are blessed to have him in our presence with his timeless and incomparable voice.
Such a golden voice. I'm a stone cold rock and roller but Chances Are is one of my all time favorite songs.
It’s one of the very few songs from my grandparents’ high school years that I really love.
Mine too! I almost fainted dead away the first time I heard it. Me and my friend would fight for space on the speaker to put our ears on it😁💕
This is stuff you wouldn’t talk about with your band mates of the day, that you were a secret Johnny Mathis fan!! ( Or a Sinatra Fan)!!
I now am not ashamed about that! A literal Superstar!!
Pussy! (Just kidding)!! I love him too!
Wonderful to feature Johnny Matthis today. He’s definitely in a class by himself. Barbra Streisand said it best: “There are a number of good singers, a smaller handful of truly great singers, and then there's Johnny Mathis.” Merry Christmas to you and yours, Adam!
What a great quote!
Best to you-
Babs hit it right on the spot! Merry Christmas, Robster! 🎄
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 And to you as well!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Hello again loved one. Merry Christmas and happy new year from your good friend Danny in Trenton Missouri.
PS, don't think too much of Babs. Gimme Karen Carpenter.
How could ANYONE NOT love Mr. Johnny Mathis?!?! He has a special special place in my heart❤
The man is a national treasure. 87 and still kicking. His voice still sounds great and you can tell he genuinely loves what he does. Great interview. Thanks, Professor!
87! Geez he looks like he's in his 60s!
He’s alive and kicking at 87. How awesome is that?
So glad Adam is able to get these interviews on tape. Johnny is a voice of the ages, but getting things like Sondheim being irritated and someone tapping him on the back so is regular folks can sing it to is just an amazing snapshot of the past.
His genuine sweetness just comes through, and his stories are wonderful. Thank you Professor I am going to show this to my mum and neighbour who are great fans of him.
International treasure. :)
The Johnny Mathis "Merry Christmas" album is always in heavy rotation in our house at Christmas time. It doesn't feel like Christmas without Johnny.
That's actually next up on my turntable!!
My Grandfather bought it for my Grandmother in the 60s
He’s the man who always makes Christmas magic.
I grew up with it as a Christmas staple.
Hallelujah!
I saw him in concert last night (the first time was in Vegas about 15 years ago). He is almost 87 years old. My mother grew up with his music and as a child, I watched his Christmas specials and though I loved his voice, I was into "cool" music of the 60s and 70s. Now I appreciate his greatness. His voice is magical, even at 87, and his sweet energy and light, understated personality draw the audience close to him. He was comical when he forgot some lyrics and the whole theater laughed along with him. At 67 I was probably the youngest person in the audience. I'll tell you what, though -- I woke up at 6 this morning with "Wonderful, Wonderful" looping in my head. He is absolutely the greatest performer I've ever seen (and I've seen Tony Bennet in his old age as well) His voice exemplifies the word "dreamy"." It's a feel good, elevated vibration . He and Marvin Gaye -- the greatest one-man shows on earth. I feel blessed to have been in that space.
Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Engelbert Humperdinck, Frank Sinatra, Ray Conniff, Percy Faith, Mel Torme. These were LPs that scattered my parents and grandparents record collections. It was always music that was in the other room or played in the car - background music that subconsciously laid a foundation in my music vocabulary. Great artists. As I grew older I realized they were essential. I find myself turning back to them and discovering them with a renewed appreciation. Keep it alive!
Johnny Mathis is a beautiful voice and a great man.
How about Bing Crosby and Burl Ives?
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Yes! So many great ones. And I forgot about Tony Bennett and Vic Damone. I had an uncle who performed with Vic Damone during the war and remained friends with him for years afterward.
@@hbofbyu1 Vic Damone was a truly underrated singer.
I'm a fan of all the classic rock acts, but I will stop dead in my tracks to sing along with with a Johnny Mathis song. Every. Single. Time. What a special interview!! Thank you and Merry Christmas!!
Same here! Merry Christmas! 🎄
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE HIM!! He's got a voice like BUTTA!
I grew up in the Richmond District in San Francisco in the 50’s and 60’s. My best friend and her sister would bake Christmas cookies and take them to the Mathis house every year. Mr and Mrs Mathis were the kindest and sweetest people. So, it warms my heart to watch your wonderful episode with John speaking so lovingly about his parents! Merry Christmas! 🎄
Merry Christmas Alison! 🎄
What wonderful memories!!
Gostei do seu resumo, você escreve detalhando muito bem.👏👏
Parabéns Alison 👏👏
You must have lived near my father. He sang in the choir, and was also on the track team with Johnny.
From 1950-1956 he lived (with parents and brother) at 215 El Camino Del Mar, up near the entrance to the Presidio.
Johnny Mathis's voice is unique and immediately recognizable, and so beautiful. Thanks for a wonderful interview.
So true :)
What a wonderful treat this was! To hear Johnny Mathis speak with such love and gratitude about his parents and the people he worked with is a breath of fresh air. What a class act he is, a perfect fit for his classy voice. Thank you Professor! Your interviews are treasures. 🎶💖
What a lovely guy. He's sensational.
You are a lucky guy to have that opportunity. Johnny is a treasure.
Just googled and found out Johnny is 87 years old! Guessing this was done recently and can only hope to look as good at 87 as Johnny Mathis. Also, adding more of his music to my library.
My grandparents look just as good as Johnny.
I still am thanking my lucky stars that my mom took me to a Mathis concert in 1964 at the Tulsa Civic Center when I was 10 years old. Pure class on stage with the most beautiful bow after every song. It was a great learning experience. But most of all the Voice. Oh that voice!
An example of talent rising above all else….America, despite its faults, can be a magical place for anyone.
Mr. Mathis……..gorgeous, marvelous voice ever. ❤👌
What a fantastic interview. Johnny Mathis transcends all genres. His music is timeless, and yet, he sits there and is so humble.
Much of my early childhood was set to music like this, on the radio. This takes me back to a time when Christmas was a joy, not so much any more.
During that time there were certain vocalists that did not sound anyone else. Nat Cole, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, and so many others, who's names I fail to recall right now.
It was such a pleasure to see this video of a man who I only knew about through the radio or TV. Thanks so much.
Merry Christmas. ;-)
Not nearly as stressful as it is nowadays.
A truly humble legend..all he talks about is the people who helped him .
Mr Mathis is such an absolute LEGEND. His voice can make angels cry from the sheer beauty and smoothness of it. His voice reminds me of being caressed by the warmest chenille blanket. There is no one that can match his intonation, his vocal phrasing or the magic he creates when he lets loose with the pipes. Thank you for such a wonderful and magical interview. It is simply not Christmas without Mr Mathis on perpetual repeat in the background.
That voice is so smooth and warm!
One of my most favorite moments is in "Misty," when he comes in after the bridge.
🎵Onnnnnnnnn my own...
His comes in and no instrument could hit that note cleaner!
OMG!! What an amazing gentleman and soul Mr. Mathis is! I am 67 years young and was always more of a Rock'n'Roll fan in my youth but had listened to some of Johnny Mathis' songs along the way and loved his voice. Your interview with him is OUTSTANDING!! I will now look for and listen to his recordings! Thank You! Thank You! Happy Holidays! This interview is one of the best Christmas presents I could have!!! PEACE OUT ✌ ☮ 🕊 ✌
Isn’t he so sweet, Denise? 🎄
Not nearly as stressful as it is nowadays.
My ex-husband introduced me to Johnny Mathis when I was 17; I have loved him ever since, and I'm now 81. He is timeless, as is his voice, which is always incredibly recognizable. unforgettable, amazing voice.
How wonderful to have the opportunity to interview this wonderful soul.
Awesome interview. Johnny's the absolute best. Love him.
How lovely to hear from this iconic performer!
What a great humble man, with a tremendous voice. I'm so glad his parents were around to see his great success. He truly loves them, and is reunion with them will be great in time.
Such a kind and humble guy who cherishes his parents. So glad he made it big! Thanks for sharing!
My favorite American person !!!
He is indeed a national treasure for the US.
John love from Mexico.
Johnny Mathis and Burl Ives; two voices with a fantastic tone. Wonderful.
Two masters of Christmastime.
Don’t forget John Denver. Coventry Carol.
My mother was a huge fan of his.....I grew up hearing music like this. Bravo, Johnny. Thanks for the memory Professor Rock! Tee
I find it great that he still recalls every detail, working with all these people, never forgetting to give others credit where it is due even though he was the face and the voice. And still to this day it was all about making his parents happy and proud, still grateful for all they did for him. All that success and such little ego. Johnny Mathis is truly one of a kind.
I just love him. What a cool guy.
Yes, he is remarkable in so many ways. A real treasure. What a blessing to us he has been!
I've always loved Johnny's voice. His music is something that will go on for generations, and you can tell that it delights him. He seems like a genuinely nice, humble guy. Great interview!
I wish I met him. That alone would make it a White Christmas for me!
Happy Christmas, Adam, thank you for blessing us with an interview with the legendary Johnny Mathis this Yuletide! 🎄🎁🎅
Merry Christmas Trina! 🎄
I've been a fan of Johnny Matthis since I was a kid, particularly his Christmas music. I was always surprised over the years that he was still touring, and finally, yesterday March 25th 2023 I saw his live and while I was probably at least 30 years younger than most there, it was truly a wonderful night. This didn't feel like the small show I thought it would be. It was grand with a full orchestra and I'm so happy I was able to see him. Still kicking and going at 87 years young.
He has such a comforting voice. How lucky we are to have him and his music 💜
Grew up with a next door neighbor in NJ that loved Mathis. Played his records all the time & lived for his appearance at a local amphitheater every summer ❤️
Cool!
What a gentleman, pure class. He didn't take his career success for granted even at this point (which is probably why he was so successful for so long), he listened, he learned and he made some of the supreme classics of the '50's and '60's. What humility, what greatness, what a vocalist. Thank God for Johnny Mathis.....and thank God for Thomas Edison, too.
My favorite song of his is the #1 hit, "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" with Deniece Williams. "Chances Are" and "Misty" are classics as well!
He and Deniece also sang the theme to Family Ties, one of the biggest shows of all time! It ran from the fall of 1982 to the spring of 1989 and starred none other than Michael J. Fox.
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 to all of your families!!! Thanks
Same to you and yours! ❤
Oh that was great! That voice! Like a hot knife through butta. Smooth. I love it. Great interview. Merry Christmas Everyone!! 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

I've adored Johnny Mathis my entire life. Chances Are, my fave all time song, still moves me. Just a wonderful singer and artist.
His voice is like velvet. So soothing to listen to his music.
His songs are magical.
What a lovely man with such a wonderful voice!
His diction is impeccable, he projects effortlessly, and he always seems to be having the time of his life whenever he sings. hearing him sing makes me so happy. I didn't know he was the third best-selling male singer, but even if he wasn't he would deserve to be. Heck, I think he's the best
He looks great! One of the best voices of any style, ever.
So cute too. ❤
Ohhh Johnny Mathis! I’ve forgotten how enchanting his voice is and how much I loved his songs. Downloading to my playlist list now.
...while you're at it, snatch "Misty Roses" (NOT "Misty"), from his "Up Up & Away" Album...SUBLIME.....
Please do! Highly encouraged!

One of the best and most distinctive warm voices ever in history !!
Thank you for this lovely interview with Mr Mathis. His humanity and humility shine with the same brightness as his talent and there is great wisdom in his words. Kudos, too, for advancing PoR production values - the 3 camera shoot, music bumpers, inserted stills, nicely paced editing - we notice when we look, but it doesn't get in the way of the story telling at all. Thanks for this great Christmas gift!
One of my earliest musical memories was my older sister getting this album of Johnny Mathis, and playing it over and over. Along with Frank Sinatra and other greats of that time. She also brought folk rock and then classic rock to me. But it all started with Johnny Mathis. Thank you, Adam, our favorite professor of rock, for bringing Johnny Mathis live to us. He is delightful and unassuming and charming. Merry Christmas to both of you and your loved ones.
Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁
Hope she had some Gordon Lightfoot in there!
What an enormous pleasure I had in being able to watch this great singer up close, I was already his fan when I left the theater I became his fan, when I left the theater I was a woman completely in love with your wonderful voice.
I’ve always loved Johnny Mathis. His music reminds me of my childhood when my mom, Mary VanderMeiden (who toured with Bob Hope, performing USO concerts for servicemen/woman) would play Christmas music around the house which always included Mathis. His humble kindness makes me love him even more. Thank you both for this Christmas gift!
So cool that she toured with Bob Hope!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Thank you! ❤️ She also played violin with Van Cliburn. I saw her on TV at least once as a kid. She spent the rest of her working years as a music teacher teaching the passion and joy of music to kids at various public schools across the country. I’m very fortunate to be spending Christmas with her and my siblings as we speak!

The most magical night I ever had was a December concert at the Star Theater in Merriville Indiana. Johnny Mathis opened the show in white slacks and a beautiful Christmas sweater and sang his Christmas songs and after intermission he was in a tuxedo and sang his wonderful classics!!! It was something I will never forget! I grew up on 60’s and 70’s music but was also the youngest of six kids so I listened to my older siblings music from the 50’s and 60’s. I still have a hits cd in my car and Johnny Mathis is the Christmas music I listen to.
Wow, Johnny hasn’t aged. A golden voice. Thanks!
Merry Christmas, Adam. I grew up listening to not just rock and roll, but also Big Band swing and orchestra music. Great music, IS great music. No matter what the genre is. Johnny is one of the best. His singing voice will live on for hundreds of years.
The 50s were elegant. Merry Christmas Lane! 🎄
It doesn't surprise me that he is so kind! I love Johnny Mathis and have since I was a little girl. He is a class act! Great voice!❤
This was THE Christmas album my white, middle-class family listened to every Christmas, and we still do with my kids and Grandkids 60 years later!
I recall loving his music as a kid in the 50s. It REALLY stood out for me, our family having a radio and little more except happiness.
My grandma and her brother listened to Johnny Mathis on their radio back then too.
Johnny Mathis is one of those singers that will forever remind me of my youth and the holidays. My mother (RIP) loved his music. She would play it on the holidays, especially when she was cooking all the treats, she would than give as gifts to so many people (all looked forward to her treats every year). It would not be Christmas without his music.
Reminds me of my family, who would cook a myriad of desserts as Christmas music filled the air.
I loved this episode! Johnny Mathis seems like such a wonderful human being as well as a legendary singer.
The Man should be considered a National Treasure!
JOHNNY MATHIS LIVES!!! 😱😱😱❤️❤️❤️

What a class act. One of the most beautiful voices in music
Johnny Mathis is not only delightful, he's such a good sport. He sings all of his standards at every concert, each time with all of his heart and soul. It's because he loves his audience as much as we love him.
To me...THE voice of the holiday season. And there is no question he is a voice of a generation. "Chances Are" is a legit classic and stands with any and all songs from The Great American Songbook. Great interview, professor.
A golden voice and a class act.
Mr and Mrs Mathis had a wonderful son how very proud of him they must have been but us fans our so lucky to listen to this lovely talented man. I have been to his concerts amazing.
Something about Johnny Mathis (not just his voice) just makes you feel love and goodness, almost as though you're in the presence of a great, kind, holy man.
A golden voice, and a lovely man. I had no idea that he'd sold so many records! I'm not surprised. A great interview.
What a nice job talking to the one and only Johnny Mathis. I still love his stuff. No one ever compared to him.
Johnny mathis was my mother's favorite of all time. I remember hearing Johnnys music in the house and sometimes my parents would dance to it. Merry Christmas Adam. Hope you're having a great one and the happiest of Christmases to everyone who reads this. May all your dreams come true.
I usually think of Nat King Cole or Roy Orbison when I think of my favorite voices but I forget to add Johnny Mathis into that conversation.
What a lovely genuine man and still has a beautiful voice!❤️
Professor, this is possibly the best interview you've done. Johnny Mathis is an amazing singer and an amazing person.
Yes, my mom got a few of his Christmas records, and Willie Nelson’s “Pretty Paper” (another great Christmas album.)
That was our tradition to just put them on the old stereo two cassettes (and later 4-5 CDs) at a time on auto play.
Pretty neat.
There are some songs that only sound right when Johnny sings them. He is one of the great crooners, along with singers like Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams and Nat King Cole.
Agreed. Nothing like the Christmas legends.
What a voice Wow, it's on the level of Roy Orbison.
I worked in a small grocery store in 1973, when I was 13 years old. I had a pocket transistor radio that I played while working. A song was playing and an older gentleman said "I'll give you $200 if you can tell me who is singing that song". I quickly replied "Johnny Mathis". He coughed and said "uh, well...Johnny can really sing". He never gave me the $200. The look on his face was priceless. Little did he know in my house we only had four albums while growing up, 1. The Platters, 2. Ray Charles, 3. The Ink Spots and 4, Johnny Mathis. Thanks for a great interview!

This is such a wonderful interview. I am on a campaign to have Johnny Mathis honored by the Kennedy Center. He is more influential in the musical art than LL Cool J or Queen Latifah. If he is the third best-selling male singer in history, why hasn't he been honored? He is not going to be around forever!! If you can expedite his nomination, that would be great!
