Minneapolis duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis recalled their formative years, working with Prince and Janet Jackson and revealed some of the secrets behind making hit records and staying relevant.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are one of the greatest songwriting and producing duo in music history. Meeting on the same ’70s Minneapolis music scene that produced Prince, the pair formed the band Flyte Time, an outfit that would morph into the original line up of one of the most storied funk groups of the era, the Time.
By 1983 the duo had begun more actively pursuing songwriting and producing, commencing a series of essential R&B singles for the likes of the S.O.S Band, Cherrelle, Cheryl Lynn, Alexander O’Neal and others. In 1986 they began their now legendary association with Janet Jackson, producing the Grammy Award winning LP _Control_, the first of many career defining efforts over the next three decades. In addition, they have crafted classics for the likes of Force M.D.’s, Sounds of Blackness, New Edition, Human League, George Michael, Usher, and Mary J. Blige.

We both grew up HUGE Prince/The Time/Parliament fans back in 1980 when I was 15yrs old. And in St. Louis (University City) MO, where I'm originally from,
NO BAND was FUNKIER than The Time...NOBODY!!
Also one of my childhood friends is playing with Morris Day or at least he was last time I checked. His name is JMac.
I live in Sacramento now and my brotha aka my version of Jimmy Jam, is best friends with Bobby G. I'm sure you probably know Bobby.

I remember seeing jimmy at the MOA when i was a kid and my babysitter being star struck and now i finally understand the magnitude these guys brought, I honestly cant get enough of jimmy and terrys original sounds.

Living in Minneapolis in the 80s, Jam and Lewis were always part of my life. I met Jimmy once at a record store, and recommended the Anita Baker album to him. I also saw Herb Alpert when he was in town recording with Jam & Lewis. Thank you two for the music of my life.
Among the greatest producers to date. The way they change the sound of an artist like SOS Band, Janet Jackson, New Edition, George Micheal, Force MD's and just take them in another direction is amazing to me. Love these dudes...can't believe Prince fired them.
I remember hearing the control album by Janet Jackson in 86...I was 12...the sounds , beats, and overall production on that album to me were so far ahead of where music was at that time. I remember the mood that would change when those songs came on at parties or on school picnics. it got the girls and guys buzzing around eachother. I like Janet and she is talented, but if you removed her from the album I'd still love it because the music and production was that strong. when rhythm nation came out I felt the same way a few years later. just amazing sounds...one day I saw these two play tender love which they wrote for the force mds...as talented as the mds were, the song still sounded great with just jam and Lewis playing it themselves. I am a rock guy and it is my favorite music, but jam and Lewis are my favorite producers because I love pop music also. my father is a big Phil spector fan..he was a famous producer from the 60s and 70s .he created a style that changed music back then and is called the wall of sound. I always try to show him jam and Lewis stuff because they were like the 80s/90s version of spector.

@@thandoreviews8886 my father has played bass in a band since the 60s..huge music fan. turned me on to the greats....from the beatles and stones to smokey and the jive five....he always had me looking at the classics from a production standpoint...so I always use jam and Lewis to illustrate to him the huge jump music took into the modern age in the 80s...their work is still just as great and fresh as it was almost 40 years ago. it is impossible to overstate how great they are and how lucky the artists who they worked with were.....sorry for rambling, but I try to give these guys the respect and props they deserve anytime I can. such cool guys also

I have lived in Berlin since 1990. I came here to be an English and art teacher at the John F. Kennedy School, with my ten-year-old son from Minneapolis. The night before we left, we went to a sneak preview that was Sister Act. A man and woman came to our row and wanted to sit far inside, in the only two seats there were. When they sat down, I realized Jimmy Jam was sitting next to me. I introduced myself. I said, "In l971-72 I was Terry Lewis's ninth grade teacher at Lincoln Junior High." He said, "Would he remember you?" I said, "Oh I'm sure he would remember me." I am also related to one of Prince's CEO's. Minneapolis is an incredibly small place sometimes... Hello, Terry! You were a wonderful student in my class. I'm so happy you found your calling! I've followed your amazing career since the 80's. This story about how you two came together is what I was always missing. Your stars crossed and you produced the Milky Way!
It's a miracle for me, every musician from Minneapolis still looks so young, whether it's Morris Day, Jimmy and Terry or Prince or... Is it a special food or the cold weather in Mnpls or it is just producing great music...?

and her sound was that of the Minneapolis sound. For instance, "What Have You Done For Me Lately" was an updated, later version of "Controversy" her sound was not original back then. And big props to Jam & Terry. These gentlemen are geniuses in their own right. But Janet's earlier sound was that of the Minneapolis sound.

Around 1:33: I love that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis emphasize having integrity when sampling the music of other artists. In other words, if they knowingly sample someone else's music they try to ensure that artist/songwriter receives the proper compensation and co-writing credit for it. #respect

Not only do I admire these guys, I actually bought some of their equipment, when they dissolved Flyte Time studio! (I think it's cool that some some 'country hick' horseback rider in Virginia owns the Simmons Drums used on a Janet Jackson album!) It's coo. They showed up on the soundtrack for a movie I did for Showtime! Love these guys!

I really can't thank you Red Bull enough for this in depth interview. I was inspired by Quincy Jones and Prince respectively. But it was Jam and Lewis that sparked me into production and at a very influential age. I credit them as what production is. It has and is still opening doors even to this day. Because even though its not as reflected on radio as much. There is still a great need for really good and moving songs. I learned to record outside the box and to play my instrument and to learn the inside of the box as well. At the end of the day it's about the song and respecting the listener. These guys are the truth and hopefully one day I can simply shake their hands. They are the reason I run my studio, appreciate my clients, love my work and see the artist take it and run.

Great to hear Jam and Lewis praise O’neal , as in the 80s they were a dynamite team together. Hearsay might have been their best production work ever, yet all most people talk about with them is the Janet Jackson albums.
mitch3996 II all their work should be talked about but the reason people talk about those Janet because they are some of the biggest selling albums in history with hit after hit after hit on them. Rhythm Nation itself had 7 Billboard Hot 100 Top 5 hits. The most of any album.

Both of these men are legends and so humble considering what they have accomplished in their career. They are so articulate and fun to listen to their stories. The SOS Band songs are some of my favorite. The sound they created was pure genius. Great interview with these two amazing producers and musicians.
These gentlemen are the epitome of true music makers! Blessed and gifted and if you're a true fan of any music they've made and still make you'll see why they're still so revolant today.

Being the big Prince fan I was back in the day I still absolutely loved these guys. They went were Prince didn't go and did what Prince didn't do. Listen to their sound, even nowadays. They always sounded so unique and they still do. Certainly Prince did too but man, Jam & Lewis gave me more vibes.
Prince from a certain point after 80's mostly in 90's was not so in making more hits or albums to sell commercial than his rights but i think he went there as well in all muisc genres...innovation was the key to everything..check 2002 live alladin with funk on everlasting now....he was evolving till his last shows with piano alone in atlanta ... death from pain killers took him...sad . He made mistakes being hard could make things different and by less complex ways and rest but he did not work that way... sad again but he pionered...Jim and Terry show respect ...In the end Prince loved what he didi and set them free. Beautiful story

In my early life, I had the pleasure to record in their Flyte Tyme Studio in Bloomington. Also recorded at Loring Park Studio where early Prince recordings were done. Minneapolis had such a creative and diverse music scene. I count it as a great blessing.

I’m a rock musician, so pop and dance music wasn’t my thing. But I used to listen to Janet Jackson’s rhythm nation album all the time and loved it. The production on that album was so amazing and it was what drew me to it. I mean, it wasn’t Janet’s voice lol. It was the production and songwriting that made that album so amazing. These guys really know what they are doing.
Jeff M Janet actually has a great voice. It is not easy to sing songs like If, That’s The way love goes, Control, Love Will never Do. And on the album you are talking about it’s not easy to sing Lonely, Miss You Much, Alright, Black Cat, Living in a world they didn’t make, Someday is Tonight. Like it’s honestly hoot EVERYTHING IS ABOUT THAT ALBUM. Every singer isn’t a powerhouse singer like Houston but if every voice sounded the same music wouldn’t be as diverse as it is. Like JJ and Terry Lewis said in this video Janet is a great singer same as Diana Ross

Jam & Lewis Flyte time Productions🎶🎶...they have always been my biggest inspirational producers. They made me pay attention to how music production was really composed & arranged. I loved the way their style and collaboration with their artist turned out. Their 80's sound was so on point and consistent from different solo artist to producing different bands acts, but I listen to their beats and cord progressions of how it stood out. For instance ' Cherelle & Alexander O'Neal "Saturday Love" the beat & the double claps during the intro their brand of sound. Janet Jackson "Control" it was the bass lines and the stops with the drum programming beats with the hand claps their sound signature. New Edition " If it isn't love" followed up production after Janet Jackson production work after her Rhythm Nation album. "If it isn't love" had the same drum programming beats with the stops, along with the tangerines & percussions was their signature sound back in the 80's. then they followed up with Johnny Gill album "Rub you the right way" was their raw funky bass lines & drum beat with that tangerines, once again that was their music sound signature, which once again stood out as a hit song. they were my inspiration to doing music my way, inwhich made me feel good.

I still have so many of these CDs of the music discussed. SOS Band, Cherelle, Jessie Johnson Review, The Time and of course Prince. I was 14 in 1985 but all of this music was everything to me. I have always said I was black in another lifetime because the music moved me to my soul! Tender love has always been a favorite of mine and surprisingly I never knew jimmy and terry were involved in it.

Jimmy "jam" Harris and Terry Lewis, my favorite producers of all time, as well as Prince. I've been a fan ever since their early production work w/ the female band Klymaxx, as well as Change w/Luther Vandross. Two of the best to ever do it.

I remember this year I heard someone commenting on the song “Saturday Love” and they mentioned never knowing all this time ( the song came out in 1985)the first and second verse were the same. This is what is amazing about a singer and as Jimmy Jam says “their approach” Alexander O’Neal for me has a voice that is just great. Drugs over the years have challenged some of that vocal ability, but the man could just sing! These two men have created so many hits and their production style is amazing! Whatever they touch turns to Gold, Platinum, and beyond!!!

Their formula for music was so remarkably timeless. Those inventive and pulsing baselines that could literally carry the track, only further ameliorated with the lush cords, and the mesmerising vocals. The great gift with this duo is that their tracks could exist solely as instrumentals, and **still** have that lasting irresistibility; that hypnotising resonance; that inimitable addictiveness.
Teddy Riley was inventive, and unquestionably brilliant, but his work seemed to lack that polish, and the maturity, and that duality.
LaFace was a force, but I think the production all-too-often was a scintillating compensation technique for lyrical depth; poetry.
This team really embodied the bothness. That phenomenal duality. My favourites!

This is a real treat!!!!! Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis went from being Prince's back up band for Vanity, and artist up under Prince's wing, to creating a more sensual, soulful sound for Minneapolis. Not to mention, the blue print for the bay area/mob sound. Over Teddy Riley, and Babyface, Jimmy and Terry were my favorite producers............ Right up under Roger Troutman, and of course, Prince, in my most humble opinion

@@HotMessMemories1 You don't listen to E-40, C-bo, or Mac Dre? If not, then that's what they call their beats, Monstrous Overriding Bass, or MOB STYLE MUSIC, or simply put, MOB SHIT. It's a bay area sound that was VERY much influenced by people like Jimmy Jam n Terry Lewis, One Way, or Zapp even. In other words, the music that I call "Jheri curl era", or early to mid eighties funk music with a deep bass line added to it, making it what they call it in the Bay MOB SHIT.
This was amazing. Jam and Lewis are true masters of music production, from the artistic to the technical. Thanks for sharing!

Robertine Daccord “You Are In My System” came out in 1982 and sounded like nothing else that was out at the time. Robert Palmer released a cover version in 1983. The System were really influential back then, as mentioned by Jimmy and Terry. Jam and Lewis' music sounds nothing like Italo Disco. What's the point of all musicians sounding the same? Why would they copy Quincy instead of creating their own sound? Also Quincy himself was very into synthesizers and new technology, Thriller is 80℅ synths and drum machines.
