If ever the was a 'grunt' capital ship, the Salamis was it. It's actually lowkey one of my favorite ship designs in Gundam. It's just so...realistic.
If the salamis is the gm, the general revil is the rx 0
"Good things will come to you if you live long enough."
- Akihiro Altland, Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans
A good refit will come if you get destroyed enough, salamis class.
I miss space guts..thanks for reminding me..
One of the best last words of a chad side character gundam pilot
Feds: good thing we updated all out ships
Zeon: *brings out MS*
Feds: O come on!
Yeah it's the anime version of the start of the second world war, Britain literally thought their battle ships could fend of fighters and bombers no issue. The Japanese showed them that just planes alone could kill a fully functional battleship on their own. The same way that Zeon showed the feddies that MS alone could kill a battleship thus changing how war was fought. Art imitating real life, makes it more real I think. :P
@@taliawtf6944 Oh
@@taliawtf6944 That is absolutely deliberate, since Tomino lived through World War 2.
@@taliawtf6944 The British actually didn't think that.
They were quite cautious indeed.
@@SudrianTales actually, it went further than that. The problem was that the British Asian Squadron/Fleet was constantly on the back foot after numerous ships were reassigned to the Atlantic. Due to various problems, the escorts that were supposed to be assigned to Force Z weren't available, and they didn't have aircraft with the necessary range...
For the longest time, I actually thought the ships were named after a lunch meat. Wasn’t sure why I thought that but Japan did had a knack for naming things after food and it did sorta made sense at the time when these ships were practically dead meat whenever a Zaku comes flying by.
Watched DBZ? Thats likely why considering most of their characters are named after food.
I love the ships in Gundam. I mean Mobile Suits are the main thing of course but I always thought the ships were just as cool to me at least.
Yea I like them too
Agreed. I have always loved Zeon's entire line of ships; the perfect balance between futuristic and practicality.
@@seprithlicastia463 How is it practical to have main guns that take a few minutes to be ready to fire?
Agreed. I also just love how detailed they're look in 0083 or origin
Baikal to Volga ships are imo best designs.
I actually did not know the Federation had only recently upgraded thier entire fleet just before the One Year War. That actually does explain why they were so far behind Zeon in adopting new strategies for using their ships and mobile suits. The Papua-class, for example, has no real Federation comparison besides White Base during the war.
Columbus-Class was the feddie counterpart to the Papua-Class
Well to be fair the Papau-class is mainly a resupply ship, thus it is easy to convert those to be MS carrier, as it has the internal volume to do so.
I’m pretty sure the clop-class was actually inferior to the salamis Kai. Far less firepower and exposed hangar.
Plus the simple fact the feds were lax and arrogant.
@@JeanLucCaptain It might be cheaper and more maneuverable. With better particle cannons and beam cannons, armor cannot keep up which is why making it more compact might be preferable for its mainline ships. In joint operation, you can have really big carriers to carry the MS and have the smaller mainline ships to conduct skirmish and defense. It kinda reflect real world too which is why you don't see battleship-size ship guarding carriers, even though making it bigger will make it able to carry more weapons.
GMs and Balls : we're persecuted by the plot !
Salamis : Hold my beer.
0083 Salamis : explodes before it can say anything
Put an important hero in a Salamis and see that Salamis kill mobile suit left, right, front and center.
@@jframe9715 It sure worked for Bright Noah. That's why HE got all the COOL ships. :p

Which ones?
@@kakarot197 if only they have english translation...
@@nabkill0134 they have a fan translation of axis v it's not perfect but playable I'm playing it right now
That reminds me of why I feel Bianca Carlyle is such an underrated character. She survived balls, GM's and salamises throughout the war until promotion to the guncannon aqua. just....how?
THE most powerful weapon in the entire multiverse of course. Plot armor.
@@orionparish9858she had massive balls to pull through
I bet nobody saw this coming.
Edit on the length of the Salamis:
One big inconsistent thing is the length of the various Salamis versions (and even that of the same version), so take these with a grain of salt. Not even the Gundam universe itself can decide on the length of these things.
Unexpected? Yes
But very much appreciated. Thanks for the new upload and I hope you’re having an awesome day!!
Hey Kakarot, would you'll do Magellan and Columbus next? Or some Zeon ships like Musai, Chivvay or Gwazine?
A very welcome surprise! If you are opening up more to things besides mobile suits, I am now very, very excited! Keep up the work. Love these videos!
I did. I look forward to more Gundam Ship videos.
I think I asked you to do this in one of the comments, the ships and vehicles of gundam which i find just as cool as the mobile suits. So thank you so much!!!
Now this is something I find particularly interesting. The actual fleet ships of the Gundam series are something that I feel don't get enough love from the community.
You gotta give kudos to the salamis cruisers. They might be weak, but they’ve got *balls*
Kakarot, I think there is a fourth explanation for MS coming out of Salamis-class ships--Basically, the war demanded increased production, so they pushed ships into service where the hull had already been laid down but the interior not finished. This worked well because they could simply leave the space for a "hangar" and at the same time save money on finishing a ship.
The Salamis, such a humble workhorse ship. I never expected to be used that long in the universal century. These things were made before GMs and yet, they still kept fighting for a long time
"if you don't give up, you will get there eventually."
If only the poor Leo had gotten the same love as the Salamis class.
the Leo MS was somewhat decent spec wise, problem comes with Gundam treatment of "grunt class" MS, targets for ace custom super prototypes and limited production series MS....
take WW2 tank aces as example, they used the SAME generic tank models other, less fortunate tank crews had (Tiger I, Panther, Sherman, T34, IS/JS heavy tanks....), yet they had the skills and cunning to MAKE them work miracles or just bully the enemy AFVs.
that's one good reason i take preference of Aldnoah Zero depiction of Mech combat than Gundam
Could be fun to see a line centered on Mobile Armors, battleships, and so on, with Mobile Suits around the size of a Lego Minifigure or such.
We should get more post UC 100 lore. It's a part for the UC timeline that feels underrated
I think for most we just kind of gloss over a lot of post 100uc, sometimes I hope they just retcon it and continue from unicorn on a different path.
Unfortunately Sunrise semms to think that means acknowledging G-Saviour as is, which isn't bad when you have context of the production, instead of, I don't know rewrite it and make it an animated movie so we can keep the good stuff the movie had.
We may being getting post UC 100 content. The tagline for the 40th anniversary was the next 100 which means we may get stuff set in the late uc, this also means we might finally get a crossbone anime. They might be thinking the whole zeon route might be getting played out so they might be seeking to try something different.
And we are getting a Hathaway's Flash movie so that may lead to further post-UC100 stuff in the future.
@@MasterArchfiend the thing is, it's essentially the most UC movie. Remember, Victory has the Federation basically a house of cards that would have been blown over in the interim rather readily. With the likely scenario that the Federation's response, in the end, is screw Newtypes more (because their _first_ option whenever they can't control something is, essentially screw it over and if they can't do that _destroy_ it), it is likely that the Newtypes, in general, modified a colony into a generational ship, grabbed as many newtypes and their families as they could, and just _leave_ the solar system.
Rip to all the poor souls lost in the one year war and 0083 aboard these ships

Damn the Salamis had a pretty shit track record in the beginning, but later on it became a damn good ship. These history videos are very very well done especially since I'm starting to get back into gundam thanks to Cross Rays on my switch. It's really interesting to see the evolution of a ship that couldn't really do much in the beginning but then later on with a couple of revisions it starts becoming one of the best ships of the federation. Great job on the video Kararot!
If Zeon had not developed their fleet around the ability to carry and deploy mobile suits, not to mention the mobility and the ability for mobile suits to essentially carry around 12inch caliber weapons (360mm Rateken Bazookas anyone?) then in a straight fight the Salamis probably would of fared much better, and the industrial capabilities would of mattered far sooner. Instead the Federation had to spend about 6 years playing catch up and only really having generally mediocre mobile suits by September of 0079 (unless you count the R.G.M.-79[G] which appeared earlier but was never designed for Space Combat as the Federation had to focus on retaking territory initially captured by Zeon)
Any image of the Federation fleet taking off from Jaburo to go to space is awesome to me.
Always been more of a fan of the Magellan, but I have a heavy respect for the Salamis and honestly any Federation ship!
U've given me a new found respect for the Salamis Class.
aged like wine, brother
Was watching Victory and I was completely shocked to see a Salamis being used as a boat. Not only that, but it was also able to lift off and boost the Reinforce enough for it to get into orbit. Was the refit and upgrades tested on the Ra Cailum by Unicorn applied to the rest of the Salamis fleet? If so, the real question is, when?
That is what many assume. That the aging Salamis Class Fleet of the Federation Space Forces recieved an upgrade that included a Minovsky Flight System just like the Ra Calium in Unicorn. Kind of makes sense the only reason why they didn't have it earlier was that it as a bit expensive but over time it would become less so has new tech is introduced.
Hmmmm... I had forgotten. While two Salamis Kai's helped get the Reinforce off Earth. Both of these ships were either destroyed or heavily damaged leaving the lead ship a Clop Class to make it to orbit alongside the Reinforce.
It also get beam shield upgrade
I didn't know that the Earth Federation had their Salamis-class retrofitted to include MS hangars. I always thought they had the Dogosse Giar-class or similar ships to do it.
Thanks for the vid! I learned something new again
It's the Ko-Salamis hangar, though
The tallgeese should be a good

Thank you for covering the ships of the Gundam verse. They are too often overlooked but have some pretty cool designs.
I was reading the wiki page of it and the magellan-class. Seeing a documentary about the Bismark sparked some curiosity about warship classes
I've always loved the design of the Salamis, looks nice and functional.
4:20 should not confused with Cosmic Era Nelson class which was Battleship instead of Cruiser

Now I really feel like watching Stardust Memory. And was that Zeta Gundam Galbaldy Beta?
Yes from the Zeta Gundam movie compilation
@@stangdrifter I'll have to look that up

Always loved the new animation in the zeta a new translation movie trilogy. Definitely worth a check out
Is it awkward that if I see a ballute pack in a mobile suit, it’s sure is in Zeta Gundam era?
Unexpected one but a pleasant one.
Never understand the point of using the Salamis in a broadside, consider the its cannon placement meant that its better off facing the enemy head on.
A broadside is more threatening, as the enemy knows you will shoot at them with everything you got, which can scare them.
Cause u can shoot all cannons at them
@@Bobert2020 But it physically can't "shot at them with everything you got". Only the guns at the bow and the stern can traverse to shoot broadside. Unless the guns on the port and starboard side can elevate 90 degrees, you are basically trading actual firepower for a weak excuse of a scare tactic.
@@Bobert2020 but the salamis had all its guns in the front so your point is invalid
There really isn’t any.
Considering it’s weapon placement the only plausible reason I can think of is to supposedly protect one of the backup bridges from damage but that’s questionable because it presents a massive silhouette and effectively halves your firepower, which are two things that you don’t want to do in a naval engagement.
I wish there were more simulation type games in the Gundam Universe. There's so much to them.
Ship development? Yes please! I always love to watch your development history videos! They really give a good rundown on the lore, whether known or obscure!
Not going to lie, when I saw that thumbnail I thought,
“Why is he talking about Space Battleship Yamato?”
Salamis: I keep trying, but I suck.
Salamis Kai (0083): Watch how it's done
*blows up*
Salamis Kai wearing sunglasses and having mobile suit bodyguards: Amateurs
4:07 4th: the ships where forgoing potentially need supply in their cargo bays in order to store MSs
This is a nice surprise Kakarot, more ship dev videos please!
I love how insanely massive the battles between fleets are in Gundam. It really highlights how much humanity has grown. And perhaps also the scale of the space around Earth. They look like they could build 40k scale ships if they wanted and probably more than most battlefleets (seriously, Imperial fleets for a sector are stupidly tiny). But, they wouldn’t be able to patrol and defend their territory. Space is huge when you have no way to shorten the distance.
Dude. What an awesome video, im am so hyped for more!!!
Looking forward to (hopefully) other non MS entry lists like fighters ships and so on. Think that’d be cool to go over space fighters, destroyers, or other non MS combat vehicles
Brilliant, I am looking forward to more videos on similar topics from the UC timeline.
Love your development history, please make more :)
Excellent work on this as always kakarot 197
The Salamis is just like the Arleigh Burke of the Gundam Universe, both are decade years old designs that remain active service for a very long time
awesome video!! waiting for the magellan class now
This was cool and I would definitely love to see you do more on ships and other military vehicles.
I do enjoy your channel keep up the awesome uploads. I like how you dig for info.
Its interesting to speculate how quickly the Federation would've won had the Minovsky Particles not been discovered by Zeon.
Heck, if the Federation had caught on early enough they could've switched gears
No, the Federation has always been corrupt, and doing just that would mean someone has a brain that is against the powers in such places. Think Russia, and you'll get the gist of the Federation.
GM development history when?
That would be interesting to watch
Didn't he already do a video about that?

Hell yea! A lore video on one of the ships of Gundam. Always loved the ships of the UC like Magellan class and Birmingham and the others.
Were gonna need a video on the Musai class Development History now.
This may be literally the only video on CZcams going over any ship class of any kind from Gundam
I really like the design of the Nelson-class ship. It looks like something for perhaps a special forces unit that doesn’t require many mobile suits so they have a basic carrier for the limited number of mobile suits.
Now i need to see the Clop-class cruisers of londo bell. #EFSF #ECOAS
Thanks kakarot!!!! I really love the space battleship in the gundam universe, hope you can do more of these ship video! I wish bandai can release these ship model kit.
Maybe if doing individual ships is hard to get info on, you could do videos on the navy of different Gundam Universes. What ships there were and how they were altered during the events of the series overall.
Ship development in gundam hmmm 🤔 Interesting hope to see more soon.
3:20
Are you sure about this? As I see it, it is only equipment to supply jet fuel, beam weapon energy, and Ballistic weapons ammunition
The irony is that if Zeon had fought only with ships like the Zanzibar and Musai... they would have lost. Mobile Suits are that much of a game changer.
Against another Sci-Fi navy such as from the Yamato series, Star Wars, Star Trek and others, despite the lack of Star Drive, the Salamis would do well. It would have been perfect in the Babylon 5 universe as a staple of Earth Alliance. It had the look, and would have a respectable punch. And it's lack of Star Drive can be offset by use of Jumpgates!
I'd be game for more videos talking about the warships of Gundam.
excellent video. i truely like the spaceships in gundam. I would like to see some of the Flagships, their history, combat achievements, engagements and so on.
Getting strong space battleship yamato vibes from these ships
Heaven knows why they'd bother with all those mega particle cannons when we know machine gun fire of high enough MM can work just as fine, if not even better for consistency.
Because gelgoogs
@@FLMKane
That sounds like a chicken and egg dilema but we're looking at the chicken here so I don't see why you'd bother.
Thank you!
I perfer the Magellan
Ya like jazz?
It was a shame the 0083-refit got shit canned.
Also, that the Salamis needed to take off from Earth might explain why they’re so flimsy-you can’t be a heavily armored space fortress and escape Earth’s gravity.
I think the original Salamis used the cargo bay for storing and deploying mobile suits. They probably used the rest of the ship for storing smaller parts and food, similar to a how a u-boat does things. It wouldn't surprise me if they had to unload the suits to bring in the goods, distribute those items throughout the ship, then load the suits back into place. Being a quartermaster for a OYW Salamis has gotta be hell.
Huh, could have sworn the main cargo bay for the Salamis Class was forward right behind the bow launchers. It is under that hatch-like thing behind the forward most gun turret. I remember seeing an old cut-a-way lineart from some sourcebook that someone showed me that areas of the ships labeled and such.
Be interesting to see the development history of the Gelgoog/Galbady models and the MS Flight Platforms used in both atmosphere and space.
I hope you make more Development Explanations of other Warships too like for Example the White Base Class and Her Sister Ships and Also Other EFSF and Zeon Ships...
That was a good history lesson 👍
Out of most Gundam series, I think Seed have the most warship battle. And also archangel has a one of the best design, since it allows Strike to stand on the ship and recharge battery at the same time.
Just don't look to close at the battles from the non HD SEED, I have started to make 3D models of the ships for 3D printing and well you can see where the art budget was spent, not on the Drakes or Nelsons.
I have feeling Archangel design actually borrowed from SCV-73 Blanc Rival instead of SCV-70 White Base
It's bridge design identical to Archangel than White Base bridge to Archangel
czcams.com/video/xOnItVnyKwc/video.html
zero X
I agree you on this one, not only the cannon is on top of the leg area similarly. The fin is also on the bottom of the ship instead of the top like white base.
What I love about Gundam is that they had tons and tons of money to spend on the war!!!!
You know I'd like to see the development history of SEED's EA ships. They do have some on-screen evolution from the beginning of SEED to the end of SEED Destiny. Not sure how much documentation on them there is though.
Practically none, sad to say. We do not even know when they were first introduced. Or even if they were from separate member state space navies. As the Earth Alliance wasn't even formed till right before the start of the First War. Before that, the Alliance was mainly known as the Sponsor Nations, as they were the ones who put the money forward to construct the PLANT Colonies.
I'm a fan of warships in UC Gundam. Thanks for shining some light on this lass glamorous part of the lore.
Keep in mind that the battles and fleets make it pretty obvious that Gundam (same with SEED) uses the term “battleship” and “cruiser” and so on in a very different way than in real life. Ship classes seem to me to be more about specialized roles in a fleet rather than “big guns to blam blam”.
I just love the Clop and Salamis class.
Holy shit, Ships!!
Man, Ships from the Gundam never get enough love..
Thanks for this.
I always assumed the opening in the bottom of the Salamis was a cargo bay door and the GMs were simply carried in the cargo bay instead of an actual hangar
They should have gotten Anaheim Electronics to redo the Salamis design. Cause all I remember the Salamis is it exploding after Zakus and other mobile suits just absolutely blasting them to pieces.
Ah yes the salamis a battleship on space with jets quite an interesting choice for a battleship
The reason that the Federation spent money on mobile suits, and not the Navy, was mentioned in several One Year stories: Zeon decimated the Earth Federation fleets, and invaded Earth in a "blitzkrieg" that was only successful, due to Zeon's mobile suit force overpowering the obsolete Federation forces. Tanks, infantry, ships, etc. were no match against mobile suits. That should answer your question about why the Earth Federation chose not to spend resources on a space fleet, in favor of mobile suits
If your cargo bays are tall enough to fit a mobile suit it's not hard to turn that into a hangar
ohohohohohoh IDEA for a development history. a video pertaining to Beam saber/heat weapons. well, at least a Universal Century edition
10:03 Now I see why they look like seaworthy vessels. Because they are actually designed to go on water.
Not really. Originally they were designed entirely for space combat. It was only when the Minovsky Flight Systems were simplified and becoming cheaper that Salamis Class ships would get such a flight system. The old naval style of the ship only helped in that particular. Though that said I wouldn't be surprised if they did had a Salamis variant that could be used on water. Since many Salamis Class ships were built on Earth after all.
Would love to see a video on the Magellan-class Battleship
the good old sally class cruiser, im supersized the federation didn't keep at least some of the 0083 refits around, sure their anti ms capability wasn't all that great but one paired with two clop class would make up for the clops lack of armament
Should have called it the Salami class, because a single Zaku could make lunch meat out of it.
The Salamis Class is just the B-52 of the Feddys
Kakarot197 have you ever built any of the 1/1200 or 1/1700 ships? Would be interesting to see a review of those!
oh nice... something i sort of suggested..
after all the ship did appear in OYW up to Victory
It’s like a salami like zeon being the bread and the gms being the vegetables and the salamis as a salami
Always love hearing about the ships of Gundam! They don't get enough love.
I hope you do more eps on ships. Personally I would like to see an ep explaining the Pegasus line during the OYW. I was surprised when playing G Generation Genesis how many similar ships there was compared to White Base. Blanc Rival, Grey Phantom, Thoroughbred and many others. I think Albion would count too?
I think it would be hard to explain Considering we not even see the original titular ship of the class yet... The SCV-69 Pegasus
Since you mentioned ships getting nuked, any chance of covering the origins of True Federal. Or maybe the over the top action of the Nemesis Corps from Were Federation Hooligans and Gundam Katana?
Yes more history of ships from Gundam!
I wish you do more of ship development historieees aaaaa
oh yes they being sliced thin nicely just like a salami
A Salamis cruiser probably picked up the last Ra Cailum battleship's crew.
