- Hey Booktube, today's video is all about a reading challenge for 2023 where I want to finish 10 book series. Because they are so much easier to start than to finish 😅

Which series are you planning on finishing in 2023?
Im trying to finish the Harry Potter series. Reading it for the first time. On book 4
Catching up to the Stormight Archives (only RoW left) and finishing the Cytonic cycle as well.
I really want to finish The Demon Cycle, as I have been working on that for almost five years now, and I am only on book three out of five, because the second book broke me... 😅
So many! I’m in the middle of almost 50 series, so I’m trying to finish 20 this year, which is probably too lofty, but we can always try.
Heartstopper. Catching up on Juno Dawson's HRMC series with book two (The shadow cabinet) coming out in June. Book one is her majesty's royal Coven. Also want to at least catch up on the tudor queens series by Alison Weir and Stephen Fry's Greek Mythology series by Re-reading books 1 and 2 and starting book 3, don't know when book 4 is coming out but Google says 2024 so I should be fine .
I have a few other series I'm tracking but we will see, not committing to too much 😉🤣
I should also continue series, but what am I doing? Starting new ones, yes.
Story of my life 🥲
That's why I made it into a challenge, otherwise I never would finish them all!
I would wait on the ones that are incomplete and concentrate on the others. I loved the Thursday Murder Club Series for cozy mysteries. I’m older so they give me hope for adventures to come.😂
I had about 25 books that I've had for like 7+ years. Pulled them all from my shelves and tried the first chapter of each. Got rid of all of them except for 2, which I'm now reading. Feels so good to clear up some space 😊
I suggest a loophole where if the next book in a series that you are not caught up on yet is not out as of Jan 1st, or even mid-year, if you make it to book number whatever is published as of the cut off date you chose, it'd still be a win towards the challenge. That way it doesn't seem like the goal post is being pushed further and further away with each new release in the series that you want to catch up on.
One nice thing I can say about my reading habits is that if I like a book (or even if I didn't like it that much but the premise is so good I convince myself that it will get better in the next book) I will binge the series (or read up until I find something severely problematic). That said I have a couple I've yet to finish still 😅 Good luck to all 🍀
Obsessed with The Locked Tomb and hopefully it will be completed by the end of this year! The second book is my favourite but they are so different, emotional and smart!
The Green Bones series is one of the best series I have read other than Red Rising… please read book 2 and 3…. The Kauls have such an amazing storyline… I listened to the audiobooks and the narrator made the stories addicting… I had to re listen to the whole series as soon as I finished book 3 😂😂
Love Octavia Butler! Favorite Sci-Fi author!
I saw on your shelves that you have the poppy war and I really recommand you to read it
I hesitated so much to start it but when I did it was the book that took my heart and made it the my favorites
It is a 5 star book really love it and it is a page turner
Hope you will like it if not it's ok everyone has their own style and taste
🥰
I saw that you had The Ruin of Kings on your shelf; that series was one of my biggest surprises last year. I went into the series pretty blind. All I knew was that it was a female author and the books had LGTBQIA+ representation. I ended up binging the whole series. They are quite funny, and you get dual timelines/POVs. I highly recommend the audiobooks! They make is super easy to read, as there is a separate narrator for each time line, as well as a separate narrator for the footnotes portions of the book.
I just bought this whole series on a whim! I'm excited to start it
a Curse Dark and lonely is a great trilogy!! the first book is a Beauty and Beast retelling and i loved it!! you have to read it!!
I know a comment on a previous video let you know about a sequel to Legends & Lattes coming out later this year. If you enjoy the Thursday Murder Club series more with the 2nd and 3rd book (they are better than the 1st), there will be a 4th book coming out in September. I'll be wanting to catch up with both of those series when they come out as well as reading books 2 and 3 of the Alchemy Wars series by Ian Tregillis, the final book in the Finishing School series by Gail Carriger, books 7 and 8 in the Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire, and the Earthseed duology by Octavia Butler. I did abysmally last year at finishing series so fingers crossed for this year.
I read Mercedes Lackey “Arrows” trilogy. I bought a preowned from Walmart online. It was in perfect condition!! It cost $11.00. It was in one book. I loved it. It was her debut series.
The hunger of the gods is so good!! And I am also wanting pick up the last one in the children of time series. I am waiting for the last one in the Brandon Sanderson western series - I love the female characters almost as much as W&W but I am anticipating an explosive ending.
This challenge along with reading what I own is my main challenge for 2023 because I (like you) start a lot of series, own a lot of series but never finish them... 😅 so right now the plan is to finish the ones I have on my bookshelves and then buy the ones I still need so I can finish more series 🤞
I'm very very bad at waiting, particularly if there are cliffhangers. Hence, I only read finished or almost finished series. I also know myself enough to never start more than one series in the same genre. It's hard to resist when there are many good reviews or when I want to support a particular author 😭 the struggle is real 😭
I'm actually pretty proud of myself because in 2022 I finished/caught up with/read 20 series and DNFed 5 more. I have another series that technically has another book out so I didn't count it, but I'm reading it translated (because after how abysmal 2021 was in terms of me reading in my own language as opposed to english I've decided to pick up more translated books) and they have not published it yet in my country so it's like another half series. This year I'm trying to be less ambitious with my goals and since I have most of my 30 before 30 books to read, I'm going minimal with planned series
- Wheel of Time (I'm only one book ahead of you, but I want to finish it ASAP so discussions of the show don't spoil anything to me if the show does ever air lol),
- First Law first trilogy,
- Earthsea Cycle,
- You series by Caroline Kepnes (the wait between when I finished the second book [autumn of 2019] and the release of third book spring of 2021, with the significant changes in show's second season really took a lot of hype I had for this series out of me; it also didn't help that from what I remember the author posted near the end of October of 2019 that she had the book finished, and people got their ARCs almost a year before the book was released to us peasants). But it seems that book 4 is being released in the Spring so maybe I'll binge them like I did with You and Hidden Bodies.
- Tales from Verania - I loved the first book so much that I immediatly started book 2, but foolishly I read the blurb for it which sounded like a love triangle situation which I hate especially after it was half of the plot of the first book and I've had hard time picking it up since (even though it most probably won't be a love triangle really)
- + 5/6 series I'm caught up with for now which are ongoing and will definitely have a new book out this year.
I'mnot going to stop myself from starting series, though. I've figured that it's much more difficult to find standalones in fantasy than series, and since I would not tell myself I can't read any standalones, I'm not going to do it with series.
I have the same goal, I put 14 series on my list. Lets crush this 💪🏻
Jade War and Legacy richly deserve your time. JW doesn't suffer from 2nd book of trilogy problem. JL provides a great conclusion to the trilogy. This from someone who usually likes the first volume most. And who wishes you Bonne Année.
I'm bad at finishing series too. I have a huge list I would like to get to this year but will see how things go. Here's a tentative list. Hoping to finish Cassandra Clare's Dark Artifices and catch up on her Last Hours series. Am hoping to also catch up on The Stormlight Archives series by Brandon Sanderson (I just have the latest book to read), Scottish Bookshop Mystery series by Paige Shelton, Cresent City by Sarah J. Maas, also by her- A Court of Thorns and Roses, Legendborn series by Tracy Deonn, The Iron Fey: Evenfall series by Julie Kagawa and Ladies Most Scandalous series by Manda Collins. Series I hope to finish- Dangerous Type Mystery by Paige Shelton, Well Met series by Jen DeLuca, The Memoirs of Lady Trent series by Marie Brennan and The Trials of Apollo series by Rick Riordan.
I have 17 series I want to finish this year, here's hoping I feel the motivation from you! I have already finished one and that was an exciting moment!
My copy of Vita Nostra arrived yesterday and I’m so excited to read it after hearing you talk about it. I didn’t actually realise it was part of a series, I’ve tried not to read too much about it because I wanted to go in without very much knowledge
Not Emily, but it def reads as a standalone. Also books 2 is not out yet (I think) and from what I've heard it will follow other characters although I'm not sure about this last one
I’d like to finish the wayward children, I’d also like to finish some manga series I have hanging over my head. I also need to finish the Fonda Lee series. I’ve been on an Indigenous kick but I think I might need a rest after the biography I’m reading.
Vita Nostra was my favorite book last year and I did not know that the translation was FINALLY coming!!!!! I am so excited. I think about that book all the time. I have made a 10 series challenge for the past three years and only complete 7. I have never thought to count catching up though. If I did that then I would reach my goal of 10. So excited for all of these for you.
Last Year I started tracking series I started and all published entries, which helped me remind myself that there were x amount of books in series left. And it felt good to have a visual representation of all completed series, that being said I started 49 new series, finished 16 of them, read at least a second entry in 4 more and abandoned 12 more
I read a series this year that has an senior main character, and seniors around her. They're cozy mysteries, they're very short 3hr audiobooks.
It's called secret agent granny by harper lin
Could be worth a shot
Didn't love the final book in the queen of the tearling series. It kind of ruined the series for me... But I want to reread it to see if my view changes. I loved it and basically binge read it in three days
The Green Bone Saga was a favorite of 2021. I hope you enjoy.
I'm excited for the rage of Dragons but waiting for the other two to release before reading further. I'll also probably reread the first
You and I don’t have the most similar reading taste but I enjoy your videos so much🤣. And I have started buying more and more books out of your recommendations🫣🤣.
I cant wait for you to finish the Green Bone Saga! I binged the whole series last year and it was so good, Jade Legacy was my favorite book of last year!
Not a series, but a standalone I spotted on your shelf that I highly recommend is Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. It is my favorite standalone!
The Fate of Tearing OMG! Love this cover and I need to finish the series too and so ready for it!💜💔🖤🖤🤎💔💓💓💓💜💙💞💙🧡💛💖💖💖💚💚💛💓💜🤎🖤🖤💜💜💜🤎🖤🖤💔💜💔💞💞💙🧡💖💖💚💗💘💝💝💝🧡💜💓💜🖤🖤💔
Dont wait until summer! Read the second book in the Neapolitan quarter. I read it last month and I cant wait to continue
I have too many book on my TBR for next couple of months lol
@@BookswithEmilyFox I get that but I'm really excited for you to get tot them
SO EXCITED!!!!❤️🤎💙💔💖💙💞💞💓📙📖🥰📖📚📚💘💚💝🧡🤎🤎💙💛💖🖤💔💔💔🤎💙❤️💞💞💓📖📖📖📚📚💝💓🧡💞💞🤎💙💙💛💜💜💖🖤💜💛🤎🤎
I am terrible at continuing/finishing series. But I did binge the Green Bone Saga! And I am FINALLY reading The Way of Kings after many, many times starting and failing despite knowing I’d love it due to being intimidated by the heft of the hardback, lol (I often read when I can, and you can’t just throw that book in a bag 😂). My friend suggested I try reading via ebook and I’m now 70% through the first book. I’m currently planning on bingeing the four books out so far, I know that it’ll hurt to have to wait for the next one though. 🙈
Hunger of the gods loved this series so good and my favorite! 💓💔🖤💜💔💓💓💖💖💞💗💚💚💘💚🧡🖤🖤💔💓💝💝💓💜🖤💜💓🤎🤎💙💖💖💙💚💚💛💘💘💘📚📚📚📖📖📚📖📖📚📚💘💘📚📙📙📙
I finished one trilogy by reading the last book. A.G. Riddle Origin Mystery trilogy.
I loved Children of Time I read it last year and also want to finish that series this year.
The Neapolitan series I binge read it last summer! Totally worth it! 😍
I'm definitely going to be continuing Vita Nostra. That book has been stuck in my mind since I read it.
I have Jade City & Jade War ready to read-very excited, but need to finish up a couple of books first!
I kinda did this last year and finished quite a few series. Anywhere from trilogies to sixtets. But more than half of them I also started last year. I've been in a fantasy slump too. I wanted to read more scifi but read barely any but I also didn't read much of it before. Then again, I'm in the middle of maybe 10-15 series and some of them will be relatively quick. There's also still a couple of duologies I want to read.
But I did revise my plan on when to start series. I want at least two books to be out and a relatively strong date for when the third one releases (or, in the case of longer series that only still need the final instalment, I wait until I know when the final book releases so I can come really close to binging the entire series if I want to). I don't like long waits within the first though third instalments of series and it's easier to remember details of the world if I spent more time in it when I start reading it. Plus it's an amazing way for true escapism. I can actually picture myself in fantasy worlds if I spend enough time there. Not that I necessarily want to since most of them are ridden with wars or natural disasters and the Cosmere in general is just a ticking time bomb for when the climax will happen (if my spidey senses are correct that might be Mistborn era 4 since Hoid will be the lead and he's the lead of the very hypothetical prequel series Dragonsteel as well. I refuse to read Dragonsteel Prime though since that's not what that series is going to be like anyway).
*Sextets
@user-vm2xc1jv8r hey. Don't say anything about that. Lol.
I'm dyslexic and not a native speaker and chose the wrong spelling. It happens.
Great as all your videos are.😊
I'm working on Children of Ruin now. I adored Children of Time. I think my pre-order of the third book in the series comes in a couple of weeks.
Emily I started reading Brandon Sanderson because of you 😍 Thank you so much 💗
Maybe you could try to finish one series every months? (Skipping February because of one week, one shelf). You would have 11 series finished by doing so🙈
I want to read the series with the little old
Lady. The first one is the little old lady behaving badly. I believe there are three total. That’s what I’m hoping to start this year.
I'm 80% into Children of Memory and really like it. I love Children of Time but Children of Ruin was only a 3 star for me as it felt very similar to Children of Time just not as good. But Children of Memory is very different and I find the writing much more engaging than Children of Ruin. The middle part can be a bit confusing but for good reason. I hope (and am pretty sure) that the ending will be epic.
Children of Time > Children of Ruin for sure. I'm glad to hear book 3 is better than book 2!
I think Thursday Murder Club has a 4th book coming out this year... probably round Christmas
OMG! Love her she is one of my favorite authors too ❤ 🖤📖📙💘📚📚📚📙📚💘📙💚💜💓💓💔🤎🤎🖤🖤🖤🖤📖📙💘📚📚🖤🤎🤎💔💝🧡💗💞💞💞💗📖🖤🖤📙📙💘📚📚💘📙📙📖📖📖📙
I would count it as caught up if the next book comes out in November/December 🤷🏻♀️
So excited to hear what you think about all of these.
Hi Emily ! I absolutely have to do the same in 2023, it's so out of control at the moment 😂
Vita Nostora series so excited to read it sounds magical and adventures 💙💜🤎🤎💙🧡💓📚💔💔💔🖤🖤🤎🤎💜💙💜💞💞🧡💓📚💚❤️💗❤️❤️💔💔💛💛💙🤎🤎🤎💜💜💞💞🖤💖🖤🖤🧡🖤❤️💓💓💔
Might have screamed when I saw Finnikin of the Rock. I absolutely loved those books (only own the first because I can’t find the same edition, sadly), but I definitely recommend them. Very well written characters. I should re-read them, since it’s been years.
You actually inspired me to look at how many series I have in progress (currently 17, yikes) and follow this challenge. So far this year I've finished one series already and am currently reading Children of Memory too.
We can do this!!
I see you have The First Sister on your shelf. The trilogy is really good! I just finished it a few weeks ago. It’s completed as well :)
I'm about half way through The Thursday Murder Club right now, and cannot decide if I like it or not! Parts of it are great but other parts I find so boring. I'm definitely interested to hear your review of the next one.
I am doing the same but put the titles in a jar, kind of. I took the title of book one and wrote it for each book in its series so I would draw book five before book two. 😅
Oh, I think book two of Vita Nostra is out in French and I need to read it... Vita Nostra is soooo weird! Book two ALMOST made it two my video but I consider it as my spare (yep... this word is pretty popular today!). I chose 5 series this year but I don't need to finish those... just read one more book ! We've got Jade City in common. I want to complete this series this year too. I want to finish Robin Hobb third Fitz trilogy, finish The Poppy War trilogy, read one more book in the Ninth House series (I liked it, contrary to many, many people) and The Atlas Paradox.
Series scare meeeee. That being said - just picked up The Broken Earth series by NK Jemisin.
Definitely pick up the second book in The Thursday Murder Club! Like you, I wasn't too invested in the first one, and I think I gave it 3 stars or something. But I loved the second book! Also, I would highly recommend listening to the audiobook as the narrator is fantastic!
Good to hear!!
I want to read Jade City so bad! It seems so good 👀
I also have the problem of starting series but not finishing them, because it is difficult for me to find all the books or because some are really expensive. But I also hope that this year I can finish some of the series that I started some time ago
I have so many series that I need to finish. Some I only need to read the last book, some I’ve only read the first book. In one case I thought I was at the last book and the authors announced there would be another book in the series. For no reason. It’s been so drawn out and I’m still bitter if you can’t tell lol
I need to work on this challenge myself...
Hope you will enjoy all the series!
Also question: why haven't you read Robin Hobb? I really think you should. Or have you read some but don't own the books?
Oh the green bone saga 😭😭😭 good luck
I'm planning on reading and finishing these series (for sure) this year:
Mistborn Eras 1 & 2
Broken Earth Trilogy
Poppy War (just started book 1)
Mask of Mirrors and book 2 in that series
Suneater Series
Legend Born (book 2)
Amari and the Nightbrothers (book 2)
I think that's realistic for me given my penchant for mood reading.
good luck with poopy war! I read the trilogy last year and am still not over it! mistborn era 1 was also amazing.
I think fall 2024/maybe early 2025 is when Stormlight 5 will come out, so you may have an excuse to read two Stormlight books this year :) Or Oathbringer and novellas (Edgedancer and Dawnshard, I forget if the latter takes place before Rhythm of War or at the same time as it(
I am really skeptical to pick up lost metal because i haven't read much besides the mistborn series and i don't know how much comsere knowledge i need to continue. Also, it's really impressive that you can continue series months or years after reading the first installment, if 2-3 months go by i need a refreshner lol
I don't think you need to read the other books in the cosmere to follow the second Mistborn series!
@@BookswithEmilyFox i have read upto bands of mourning but other reviews i watched said that lost metal is cosmere heavy and i dont think im upto it yet. I guess i can wait until you read it and maybe i'll read it then
Ooooh I see!
Definitely read Mistborn The Secret History novella before you read The Lost Metal or you’ll be confused!
"The Burning" will actually have 4 books... Octavia E. Butler is also my favorite author.
I personally like series but I do like when they are already out so I can binge them
I only have seven open series but alot of titles I don't own and I am on a book buying halt (read eight buy the ninth) and with that limited amount of book buying I usually go for other titles than the ones I need to get to continue or finish a series 😂
atleast two of the series are comics so not to big but don't tell that to the series I haven't even started on my bookshelves
probably also the reason I haven't started them because they are large and in charge
My problem is that if I really like a series I will reread it, like Discovery of Witches or Ilona Andrew's books or Kim Harrison's .
You inspired me to start this challenge last year and I've been having the best time! For some reason I have this fear of continuing a series even if I loved the first book lol (besides Realm of the Elderlings) it makes zero sense 😂
Also I have been meaning to recommend a book to you, it's called A Door into Ocean by Joan Slonczewski, it's one of my all time favourite science fiction books and is also considered feminist sci-fi. If you're craving something unique and truly beautiful then check it out 💖
i just recently started Crescent City by Sarah J Maas. It's my first SJM book/series and I'm STRUGGLING.
Anyone who has read it, does it get better past chapter 5?
I’m having the same problem!!
I started Shadow of the gods and then I didn't read it anymore, then I continued, I enjoyed it but I stopped reading for some reason and I just don't know if I want to read it or not :D Maybe I give it one more time and we'll see.
I struggled with it too!
I am terrible at finishing series but so good about starting them. I definitely blame booktube!
Too many new shiny series XD
Have you read any of Robin Hobbs books? An excellent fantasy author
A Book a Day !
Pleaaaaase read the city of brass by s.a. chakraborty
❤️📚
Lord of Demons by Evan Winters (the burning book 3)is slated for 2023 but we know nothing about it or have any clues.
No way!
Hi there 😊 ☺️ 🤗 🙂 😄 hi 👋 😊 ☺️ 😀 hello hi 👋 😊 ☺️ 😄 🤗 hello
Octavia E. Butler I looked up Octavia E. Butler in Bulgarian because of you and I can assure you that the two translations I found have uglier covers
I HATED book 3 of Queen of the Tearling...spoiled the series for me
I really really need to get up to date with the Stormlight archive, as well as Game of Thrones (been eyeing book 5 for literal years), I also need to continue with Robyn Hobb's first trilogy (Assasin's apprentice) and finally finish the Millenium trilogy (Girl with the dragon tattoo). Lastly need to continue with Sandon's Skyward books as well as the last book in the second era Mistborn. These are just my priorities but there is definitely a LOT more 🥲
