- A playthrough of Interplay's 1997 multiplayer action-puzzle game for PCs running Windows 95, Atomic Bomberman.
This video shows a single match played on each of the maps available in game. Some of the matches are running all AI characters, and I am playing in some (though this game's AI is beyond twitchy) - however, the best way to play this way back in 1997 was over a 28.8k modem - internet multiplayer was amazing on this when you think that it's 19 years old now. I also changed up the number of players between matches, with some of them carrying the max player count at 10 Bombermen simultaneously blowing each other up.
It's quite a unique take on the series, with its pre-rendered CG characters, a really distinct 90s house/techno soundtrack, random voice overs all over the place (played by voice actors for Buster Bunny from Tiny Toons and Stimpy from Ren & Stimpy), and it's lack of a dedicated single-player "story" mode.
It's also officially licensed by Hudson Soft, so this wasn't some off-shoot, random homage to the series - it is sanctioned as an legit entry in the series.
It was never my favorite Bomberman, but it definitely deserves a look, and it stands WELL above that abomination that Konami unleashed several years later.

Charlie Adler and Billy West, two well known voice actors of comedy. How did they get a gig in this game is beyond me.
Ah, good ol' Atomic Bomberman, I'm still playing it and having some good laughs with it.
The voices, the level editor, the challenging CPU players, the unfinished campaign mode, the fact you can mess with the configurations so you can play it with your own rules, you can even make new death animations and modify the items icons... truly the best Bomberman game ever. This is a good game to train your Bomberman skills as well.
How can you change the configurations, the sound or create new death animations?
@@Inn512 It's really complex, few people have done it and I'm not really sure how it works totally, I've seen some video of some guy that made custom stages which is recent, the new animations were made like a decade ago I think and I doubt the creator is still around.
The configurations was in the game's installation folder so I remember, I'll check which file was it later, you can open it with Notepad or preferably Notepad++

This officially-licensed, PC-only Bomberman game is certainly unique - not least of all for having Stimpy, Fry, Buster Bunny, and Starscream shouting constantly at you during matches. This was amazing back in 1997 playing multiplayer over dial-up.
Favorite way to play this game for me was with my brother and I playing on the same computer in a custom match with splooge, 99 remote bombs, and no obstacles. Let the mayhem begin.
Weretyu7777 My sister and I used to play all the time too, but id be in my room on the computer and she'd be in my parents room on their computer, and we had the machines tethered with this ridiculous homemade 100ft crossover cable. For us, it was basic Green Acres, default settings always. After awhile wed inevitably move onto deathmatches in Duke Nukem 3d :D good times, I cant believe that was 25 years ago

I'll say. I still have my original CD and I can tell you there is ZERO speed limiting in it. Oh it'll run just fine in windows7x64, but speedwise a game from 97 on modern hardware? thousands of FPS. Rounds are over in moments.

The bots are programmed badly. Playing against ideally 7 skilled humans that game develops surprising depth. Talking from years of intense experience. Also, teamplay, e. g. 4 against 4, is supported. That, combined with custom maps, anything is possible (and good fun)!
The graphics are delightfully barfy in a weird 90s way, but Billy West definitely carries this game.

Picked up the game at Toys R Us on sale as a kid. Did not regret it.
At first it wasn't what I expected based on other bomberman games, but the humor grew on me, and even tho it was glitchy at times, the gameplay was good. I would battle the cpus and they were really hard to beat.
It is stays true with the bomberman spirit especially how fans often prefer PvP instead of PvE.
Feels a little weird that Japan made a game with "Atomic Bomb" in the title

Which os did you try it on? I recorded this on Windows 10 with no problems at all. Just run the installer in Win95 compatibility mode and everything else should play just fine :)
Windows 7 was the last time I tried, I guess I could give it another shot.

D0CM4K There were unused voice clips of the characters swearing. A lot of them were done both by Billy West and Charlie Adler doing several takes of various lines using various voices.
You could do so by modding the game.

Why can’t this be the redesigns that bomberman goes for NOT ACT ZERO. But Super Bomberman R has the best redesigns in history. But as for Act-zero as I mentioned THE WORST REDESIGN IN HISTORY

I have never had to ask myself so often while playing this game: “HOW IS THE AI SO FUCKING AWFUL AT THIS GAME?” In any match above 5 players there’s a guarantee one bomber will kill themselves before the 15 second mark.

Splody, yeah quite good, technically, but the game becomes boring, because it lacks the taunts and the cool music, and most of the collectables, to bring more tension in the game.
