    My wife calls me a mule all the time so I can empathize with this little guy! (jk -- maybe once or twice, and I think I deserved it) Watching him trying to control those long, long legs is just adorable -- and his wipe out at 0:45 had me totally lmao -- I know just how he feels when he jumps back up, looks at the camera person, and is like "See! I just showed you what a tough guy I am and what a tough fake fall I can do!! You thought I reeaaally fell?! Silly human! That was all part of my demonstration!" Thanks for another cool video and commentary Rick. I have never worked with a very young, not-at-all trained horse (or mule for that matter) and neither has my wife so your comments are very interesting. Seriously you make our day when you post new videos -- your commentaries and/or your videos of just the boys enjoying their beautiful home in Texas. Your recent video of your rolling on the ground demonstration "scaring" the boys had my wife (and me) dying w/laughter -- not to mention that it was fascinating to see the boys react together as a "team" and individually. Thanks again Rick!

    I have a friend who is raising her Tennessee Walking Horse colt. He loves thinking he's big and bad. She had her four year old out there with her one day as she was feeding. The colt decided to be big and bad. Around this time, he was around six or seven months and had already been weaned because of how big he was and how he was sucking all the fat off Mom. My friend, who is big on natural horsemanship, turned her butt to him and kicked him like a mother horse would. That colt didn't know what to think of that! She "made up" with him later, but he quit turning his butt to her after that.

    seen this behaviour a million times as all my horses i have had from under a year old and all colts(now geldings) and it is sweet and funny but yes i have had to front up and stand tall everytime they did this, it actually carries on for quite a while and every now and again they will see if they can get above you in the pecking order and it just takes the human to front up and back them up in a dominant and confident manner (above all respectful) to solve this, all my boys are older now and still miss this innocent colt learning behaviour ;)

    • @ThinkLikeAHorse
      @ThinkLikeAHorse  Před 8 lety +58

      I let babies test and explore, I don't like beating or pushing the playfulness from babies, I know I have a good two years to correct and get him under control, unless he gets close enough to hit me he can act like a badass all day from a distance. If it gets to be a habit and he gets ear pinning all the time then maybe step in and show him, but kids got to kids and foals need to be foals.. it is a give a take and reading along the way, knowing when and how much to step in without crushing his confidence and growth... it is a process NOT an event.

  • @DoubleDogDare54
    @DoubleDogDare54 Před 8 lety +5

    Cute in a little baby - not cute if he keeps it up when he gets old.
    I see the same problem in dogs - people think it's cute when a little puppy growls and gets "mouthy" with them, then wonder why the cute 8 week old pup is biting people when he's 18 months. And then the dog makes a one-way trip to the vets because its turned into a serious biter.
    This mule colt can kick up his heels all he wants on his own but if he started getting pushy with me I'd carry a light knotted rope and pinwheel it at him and lightly smack him with it to let him know he ain't the only one who can get pushy, I'm a tougher "horse" than he is, can defend myself, so respect me and keep your distance when I'm around.
    Won't hurt him but will teach him some manners, not unlike when an older horse nips at a young one to put him in his place. The rope is the "nip" and I'm that older horse.

      @TheBarkinFrog Před 7 lety

    A confident little buggaroo that will do nice with a firm, hands on handler I think! Would there be a behaviorally healthy way to engage in a more rough and tumble play with the foal in a way that teaches it respect ( no hooves or teeth, if he steps boundaries the play stops, much like handling an eager puppy) as well as asserts your place in the herd?

    @MartinPlanner2 Před 8 lety +13

    it's a lone youngling, thus he has no other younglings to play around with to learn what rick talked about so he does it with humans...which does not yield the same results and learning experience if it were done with other foals so it's a half job...and then produces a lot of grown up horses who are "disrespectful" (oh how i dislike that word) because it is what it was normal for them to push around humans...
    but hey stupid people teach the lesson that they are stupid so you can do anything to them :D good vid

    • @InkGraffiti
      @InkGraffiti Před 8 lety

      Even if he hasn't got other babies to learn from, he'll learn from mom. The animal behavior 'glitches' happen when they have NONE of their own species to teach them ( bottle fed dog puppies come to mind )

    • @MartinPlanner2
      @MartinPlanner2 Před 8 lety +2

      so you think it can learn a full heard (a dozen or more) horses social behaviour from just mom? horses are meant to have a complex herd social structure and without it the coungsters can't learn what it means to challange 50times a day, and to look for fun yet useful ways to explore and learn...

    Very cute! But just from the title on the video ("Dancing Mule") I'm infering that the video maker has no clue about reading the foal's behavior: s/he thinks it's a dance performance. Yeah, it's cute, but wait till this baby grows to 1000 lbs or more and continues this behavior.

    Such a cute little Mule! I'm thinking that maybe he/she had some troubles in the recent past. It looked to me like there was a part of his neck shaved where they commonly give IV's to foals if their IGG counts are low or they have other issues. Perhaps this one has been handled a LOT when he wasn't feeling so hot and for that reason has not learned respect or boundaries (yet) and is just feeling good.

I know it's a totally different species but I think I saw a lot of pressure release shown by the gorilla towards the child that was misinterpreted as violence by the humans when it wasn't. I guess it also can fall in line with your gun videos since it involves guns lol. Just wanted to see what you thought of the stupid humans in the video. Thanks!
