  • The Centenary Trail is a 145km loop around Canberra which is a must do. I actually never had much interest in doing it, but a few friends were heading down so I decided to tag along. I'm very glad I did as I absolutely loved it.
    It's a great ride and this video shows a lot of it.
    I completed this loop on my 30 year old, 1992 Mongoose Switchback.
    Here is the loop we did ridewithgps.co...

    Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed that.
    That is my home trail. I've done the One Tree Hill segment over a hundred times. During covid I rode it three times a weeks - with an early start I could just get through it and be online working from home by 9am. As long as it wasn't minus 2 degrees or colder for me. You showed it really nicely. It is a fabulous ride.
    I've done all the other segments, but this is by far my favourite. Stromlo to Tuggeranong via Kambah Pool is nice too, but I find that hard work. I have a slight variation on the official route where I can get from Hall to Black Mountain (about 14k) almost entirely on single track and just three road crossings rather than the official route that has a lot of bike path and more road crossings.
    Thanks again.

      I miss so many comments. Riding trails like that before work would be a dream. love it.
      More single track on those open sections would be so cool. It would be cool to do the loop with a local one day to find out all the hidden gems.

    Sorry I'm a bit late here but absolutely love this one!!! I live 100m from Cooleman Ridge and ride or run these trails a few times each week. Great to see it on video and just fabulous that you enjoyed your time here. We're proud of our bit of backyard paradise ... the variety of terrain and scenery available across the area is stunning. It really never gets old. Push a bit more westward ... like all of about 15km ... into the Brindabellas and the ride opportunities are endless. We don't do that often enough because we're lazy and think it's too far ... well spoilt I think. Thanks again. Love your videos.

    Wow, what a amazing ride, and story. I think this style of narration is just fine for this video. Sounded like you had some reservations if this would work, well sir, it does. Great work! It is NOT too long. For someone like me, it can't bee too long. I live in San Antonio Texas, USA. My chances of going on a ride like this , out there, are almost zero. I wish I could afford to fly out there, but most likely it will never happen, so the only way cyclists like me will ever have a chance to experience this ride, in some way is through your videos. So no, it's not too long. Your narration, editing and music is spot on. Great work as always. Cheers from Texas!!

      Cheers mate, I appreciate the kind words. I’m actually pretty happy how this turned out. I wasn’t sure if it would work and took me a few months to get my butt into gear and finish it. Glad I took the time as it’s a decent view of the loop. I’ve just finished another video which is the 3rd in a row of lots of action camera type POV shots. This last one I just uploaded today not as bad but I’m craving a Solo adventure where I can take my time and setup some shots.

    Loved the Video!
    As the designer of the Centenary Trail (and the arboretum trails) I really enjoyed hearing the perspective of a first time rider.
    You pretty much rode it in the direction I always do (though I do like riding down the Murrumbidgee bit…). As I understand it the arboretum trails will officially be included in to the loop (including the loop to the top of Dairy Farmers Hill) - so happy to say you didn’t really leave the trail.
    The trail has evolved over the last few years, and at the time we were constrained with the ‘7 day walk/3 day cycle’ requirement. I’d suggest that the Tuggeranong section might change a little, following the Murrumbidgee to Lanyon and then onto Tuggeranong Hill and back north. It’ll add another 30k but all single track with stunning views north south east and west at different times.
    There are a few other bits of single trail that have been added and hopefully, sometime soon there’ll be a few more peaks for cyclists (with nice climbs and descents added - I’ve still got all of the original planned gos alignments 😊).

      Oh man, Firstly I find it cool that the designer watched my video. It's a sweet ride. So thanks for the effort of throwing it together.
      Some of the changes sound awesome, you had me at stunning views. I'll definitely have to do it again when all this is released. Is there an offical route online anywhere? When I did it I just used a GPX file from a friend that had done it. The GPS download on the centenary trail website bounces all over the place. All the signs are good but a decent GPX file to know you're 100% on the right trail would be good. looking forward to hearing about these extra areas opening up. Cheers!

    I've done it in both directions and think I prefer ACW. Both times done in a single day, which is tough at the tail end. Starting with the northern loop is the smarter option as it has a lot of vertical and more steeper sections so better with fresh legs. You just have to watch out for walkers in the morning as it is also the busiest section of the trail. Definitely a ride to add to your bucket list.

      @advanturest  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Haha, I just watched the intro again and I can 100% see what you’re talking about. It felt fine riding so my guess is it was just the camera angle. The GoPro lens is offset to the left of the mounts which should be centre on my chest. Also, I put a different stem on the bike for this ride, the bars have felt too low so I put a 45 degree stem on it. I think the camera angle and the raised stem is probably the reason for illusion. I’m looking at getting some moto style bars for it because I don’t like the look of the 45deg stem. I’d prefer the rise to be in the bars. Hopefully that will fix it for you 😂

      Sorry mate, just remembered I didn’t respond to this. So we did do it over 3 days, more like 2 and a half really but you get the idea. I think it could easily be done in 2 days if you started earlier and kept moving. We were pretty cruisy and didn’t leave Sydney until 6am. I think we started riding about 9.30am on one of the shortest days of the year. Once you choose accommodation you could then work out a suitable start point to make the accommodation close to the middle of the loop. I would think some people start down near Tuggeranong and camp at the Northern Border campground. For me, I really enjoyed the slower pace, stopping for beers. If I did it again I’m not sure how I would do it, probably the same. I really enjoyed it.

      We really didn’t see that many people. A few about. My favourite section of trail we did on a Friday so maybe that northern end is busier on a weekend. Don’t really know. Either way it was a great ride and I’d recommend doing it.
      As for the frame bag. A friend of mine wanted to try make himself a bag, he decided to do a practice one first so he did it for my bike just in case it worked. I’m very happy he did because I use it all the time. It’s been a few years and I don’t think he has made himself one yet. 😂
      Cheers.

    Another great video mate loved it. Do you have a Strava or Kamoot link for that route? Really keen to give it a crack

      I'm sure there is a Kamoot or Ride with GPS link somewhere on the web but I didn't bother looking. I did Strava it though. See links below. I started a ridewithGPS account to share all my routes in the description of these videos, I have been a bit slack though. I'll try get it done. Cheers

    epic video mate.
    question how does the leader know the route. is he following his phone on google maps...
    or just good memory.

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Cheers mate. This one was a punish to edit. I think I had 300gb of GoPro footage to go through. Definitely gives you a good idea of what to expect on the loop.
      As for the route. The guys I went with had done it before which helped. but there are a lot of centenary trail signs to lead you. some can be hard to see so I'd definitely recommend having the route on a GPS or phone. I think we made a few wrong turns. One was when we entered the Arboretum. I don't think that trail up through the trees was the correct route. but I think it was nicer.

    Was Oz ahead of the curve with disc brakes, or did you add discs to the frame and fork? Seems more than a decade earlier than anything in North America, especially for Mongoose.

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  Před 9 měsíci

      Haha, nah mate, if you look closely you will see cantilever brakes and no calliper. I have converted other bikes to disk and use these wheels on multiple bikes. I’ve set up the wheel with a rim brake rim and disk brake hub so I can use the wheel on either bike. I suppose when I ride the Mongoose I carry the disk around with me as a spare for the other boys 😂

    Really love the content. I don't know if I'm the only one but the last couple videos I've struggle to get through due to the length. Just an idea but Maby breaking them up into a series rather than one video. Makes it a little easier to watch. I find personally 10-15mins are the videos I generally pick to watch. Either way Still enjoy the content.

      Cheers mate, Love the feedback. I was very close to uploaded this in 2 parts for that reason, but I thought for people actually using it as a reference it would be good to have it all in the one place. I honestly debated this in my head for over 2 months. 😄

      @@advanturest that's fair enough. I don't know if you have watched anything of what galaxy on the trail does. But he splits it up into days with rough map layout and distance and elevation and makes a series. Keep up the good work 🤙

    thanks for the video great work just a question about the gates you were lifting over at 78 years old i now ride an E bike .witch is quite heavy can you tell me how many and how high and would it be feasible to be able to lift over on my own ? Thanks in advance Mike .

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I actually think I showed all the gates that require a lift. I can only think of the 2. I’m fairly confident I would have filmed every gate and I don’t have any footage of other gates. There are a heap of gates with gaps to squeeze through so they shouldn’t be an issue.
      As for lifting. My bike was pretty heavy loaded, potentially close to the weight of an e-bike. I think it’s manageable but I’m not 78. My guess the gate would be about 1 metre high give or take.

    This is great! Thanks so much for sharing now the question is gravel bike with 45c or rigid mountain bike with 2inch

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  Před 10 měsíci

      There was definitely some roughish decents but nothing that was too bad on the rigid bike. Saying that my bike was pretty heavy with all the crap I took. A light gravel bike or a light rigid mountain bike will most likely feel the bumps more than the heavy Mongoose. All that extra weight seems to make these old steel bikes ride nicer. Good luck with your decision.

    Love the video , its on our list , can i ask did you just use the signage markers for navigation? Or did you use electronic maps ? Thanks

    • @advanturest
      @advanturest  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I’d recommend having an electronic map on you. I think it’s possibly without but when you get into the busy urban areas it can be hard to see the signs as they just blend into the busy landscape. A few of the guys I was with had done the loop before, I just followed the whole time so I wasn’t really paying too much attention. A few times I thought “are we going the right way”. But as I said, I wasn’t paying attention so I could of easily missed critical signs. I think having a map would be handy.
