    ANGGALANG MAGUNATIP, ETNIK MURUT, SABAH.
Magunatip, an enchanting dance also known as the Bamboo Dance, has its roots deeply embedded in the rich tapestry of the Murut ethnic culture. Steeped in tradition, this captivating dance was originally performed to celebrate the triumphant return of fearless Murut warriors from victorious battles and headhunting expeditions.
The very essence of the word 'Magunatip' evokes a sense of unity and strength, derived from the Murut word 'atip', meaning 'to press two surfaces together'. Those who dare to partake in this mesmerizing dance must possess not only remarkable skill but also incredible agility, effortlessly navigating between the clapping bamboo poles with swift and nimble footwork, avoiding entrapment with graceful precision.
The mesmerizing performance commences with a solo male dancer, embodying the spirit of a valiant warrior, engaging in the 'mahihialang', a dance that showcases his prowess and valor. Standing alongside, female dancers elegantly perform the 'Anggalang Dance', their movements exuding grace and beauty. The male dancer, adorned in a resplendent bark jacket and a traditional loin cloth, wields a sword called 'gayang', symbolizing courage and bravery. The female dancers are bedecked in stunning costumes known as 'limpur', adorned with intricate beadwork and exquisite embroidery, adding a touch of allure and splendor to the performance.
In addition to its historical significance, the 'Anggalang' and 'Magunatip' dances are integral components of the 'tinauh', a momentous Tagal Murut tribal ceremony that revolves around the exchange of bride wealth. These captivating dances, now often presented during weddings and other joyous occasions, are accompanied by a symphony of traditional music. The harmonious melodies resonate through the air as six majestic gongs reverberate, joined by the mesmerizing tones of 25 'tagunggak', bamboo idiophones, and the rhythmic beats of a 'tambor', a traditional drum.
Witnessing the 'Magunatip' dance, one is transported into a realm where history and artistry intertwine. It is a celebration of bravery, unity, and the indomitable spirit of the 'Murut' people. As the clashing bamboo poles echo in harmony with the dancers' graceful movements, the 'Magunatip' dance serves as a testament to the resilience, valor, and vibrant cultural heritage of the 'Murut' community.
