The assault to recover them was legal as UK law allows the use of reasonable force to stop a crime which is in progress. I'm not saying that everyone should be a have-a-go hero but sometimes you just have to act. Doing so is legal as long as you only use reasonable force.

The guy at 5:30 handled that masterfully he kept calm apologized and explained in a calm tone not interrupting at all. Communication is absolutely key in these situations. You don’t defuse a bomb by getting angrier and angrier and ripping into it you calm yourself and collect your emotions to keep neutral and calm. Bravo to that man and the rider for taking a breath and realizing no harm done just a little shock and proceeding on with their day.
