  • What Causes Major Depression? (Biological Triggers, Including Inflammation) // Last week, we learned that depression WASN’T the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain. In my next few videos, we are going to look at some real risk factors for depression -starting with biological risk factors.
Discussed: prescription medications, the relationship between chronic inflammation and depression, what causes chronic inflammation, and the role of genetics in depression.
0:00 - Intro & Why it’s important that we address depression at its roots
    1:59 - Risk factor #1: prescription medications
    2:52 - Risk factor #2: chronic inflammation
    4:34 - Risk factor #3: genetics
    6:42 - Closing thoughts

Was feeling a little under the weather when I filmed this video... hopefully I was able to get my points across in a way that made sense/ was digestible! All books and studies mentioned can be found under the "Research" section of the description box.

When under heavy stress I could feel my body breaking down, with illness entering into my weakest points of my body.I had to mentally release all of these restrictions, to maintain my health and avoid hospitalization.I have utilized meditation for most of my life to maintain my health. If I feel any restrictions or problems arising, I release them through deep meditation. We have the power to take command of our immune system, if we learn how to meditate correctly and keep it up for decades.I haven't even caught a cold since 1990.

Thank you! Looking back, I almost wish I had spent more time on the inflammation-depression bit. Do you think I should do another video delving into it? Just on the inflammation-depression connection? I remember having an "aha" moment when I first learned about this relationship. It made so much more sense to me than the chemical imbalance theory.

Also, I started on Dr. Orloff's Empath's Survival Guide. I few chapters in and she's definitely talking about me, ha!
Schopenhauer recognized what you'd mentioned about our minds being very much part of our bodies, and what feels like our will, something separate, something outside of ourselves, is deeply ingrained into our biology.

Yeah.. it's not the most romantic notion... the idea that we really don't have free will (sounds like you're on the same page on that regard, I bet). Glad you're enjoying the book. I haven't finished it, to be honest. I'm reading A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle now! If you enjoyed the Empath's Survival Guide, you would like the Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aron too!

Psilocybin has "potent anti-inflammatory" properties, which is currently being studied in Alzheimer's patients as a possible treatment. Funnily, it is also why you sometimes tear-up, have a runny nose, have to "poop", have phlegm, sweat, etc., as your orifices relax and secrete. (Not sure about the yawning thing, though.) Anecdotally, I have noticed my tinnitus goes away during psilocybin treatments, which I am sure is related. And for sure, my ruminative depression/anxiety has not surfaced in over two years (since my first treatment).

      Summary:
In summary, the profound anti-inflammatory effects of the psychedelic R-DOI has been demonstrated in both acute and chronic disease models in animals. In these models, the underlying molecular mechanisms of inflammation TNF-alpha mediated, which have been demonstrated in the pathophysiology atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, type II diabetes, depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease [27]. In simplistic terms, the process starts with the activation of immune cells, such as mast cells, T-lymphocytes, and monocytes. These cells contain various serotonin receptors, including the 5HT2A receptor which is known to be especially important in inflammation. Serotonin, by attaching to the 5HT2A receptor is oneway these cells can be activated. These cells then release a variety of proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF. TNF proceeds to trigger subsequent events which lead to the production of more inflammatory mediators [76]. However, when the psychedelic agent R-DOI, a high affinity agonist at the serotonin receptor binds to these cells, the proinflammatory response is suppressed [76].

One more anecdote on the anti-inflammatory properties of psilocybin... My wife and I have just finished our second round of Covid-19 vaccine shots (pfizer). We both take the same health supplements. She does not take, never has taken, magic mushrooms. Our first shots were uneventful, just soreness in the arm at the injection sight for both of us. For both shots, I took 1/2 gram of mushrooms the night before the shot. The second shot is notorious for producing an inflammation response (fever, headache, body aches, flu-like symptoms, etc.). My wife had all of these symptoms, yet I had no symptoms at all. (Yay, magic mushrooms?) Anyway, she is doing better now, and enjoying being pampered. :)

That 37% genetics does seem very high and quite eye opening. The comment that you quoted hit it on the nail, what is the root cause? Masking it with medication is never the answer but I do see it's need for extreme circumstances. On the flip side, do you think we've gotten so disconnected with our inner selves that we are constantly looking outside of us, or something physical (like medication) for answers or temporary relief? I know for everyone it's different and depression can happen for a number of reasons, of all the people I know who struggle with this and some who have gotten a better handle on it have always said it was a mindset shift, realization and awareness by finding the root cause and bringing those to the surface. However, easier said than done. By the way look at you passing 500 subs! woooohoooo!

I'm going to cover this when I talk about spirituality and depression (I use the term "spirituality" in its broadest sense of course). You hit the nail on the head on that one. Chronic stress, adrenal fatigue, cptsd, traumas. Deficiencies. Trace minerals. Vitamin d, b1, b9, b12 ect. Have you looked into b9
    L methylfolate and depression?
And of course tyroid issues. Which stress reaps havoc on all the above.

Hey, In a portion of this video you spoke about HSP and coping mechanisms for people who have HSP. I feel I am going to share with you things that are a little personal, but I highly respect your views so I am willing to share.. I have a fairly large degree of HSP, and there have been times where I have been physically debilitated in moments by this.. I have gone to therapists before, and there were several practices that they recommend I introduce into my life. I did and still do. But I feel I may have continued to push too hard to act like a stereotypical man and ignore my emotional state. Like a circuit breaker breaking, my mental state did the same. In order to cope I have found myself, at times, isolating from everyone to an unhealthy degree.. But cutting out the world has seemingly become my new coping method?? COVID hasn't helped the situation either I guess.. I am blessed with amazing friends and family, and they have been incredibly patient and kind. But I am reaching out and hopefully I can grasp another way.. I am deeply sorry I wrote a book to you just now but, like I said before, I respect you and your words really resonate with me. I hope you can share with me some ideas or methods you have exercised in your own life to cope. Thank you also for reading these comments.. It means a lot to us : )

Hi Matthew, thanks for sharing your experience. I feel honored that you feel you can open up to me here. One thing that I've been really personally interested in lately is learning more about spiritual awakenings. Apparently, a spiritual awakening is often preceded by a "spiritual depression." I feel like I've recently gone through something (at least similar to) a spiritual awakening. And I know the period that preceded that was a spiritual depression (loneliness, disconnection, feeling hopeless in what was). Us HSP's have a greater "pain body," which lowers the threshold for us to have an awakening. Once you've awakened, things feel much lighter and you feel like you can just go with the flow of the universe. Watch this TED talk: czcams.com/video/7c5t6FkvUG0/video.html; also read "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle if you haven't yet. Hope this helps!
