He's so right. Most insecurities are based on illusions, exacerbated by inaccurate comparisons to others. “The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.” ~ Steven Furtick
I keep coming back to this video -- it really, really helps. I could listen to Stephen Fry talk about anything and everything for hours on end. Seriously. The man is a legend.
Such an incredibly eloquent and intelligent man. I don't remember ever hearing him say anything that I couldn't immediately relate to. I wish I was able to express myself as well as he is.
Ah, man. It's so liberating to hear someone else say this. Nobody has ever described how I feel so well up until now. And to see so many of you fellow people, saying the same thing, that you felt the same, fills me with a deep warmness, that we're all together. We're not alone.
Dude, I'm 27 in November and I'm in the same boat! Nothing to be afraid of though. Just do what you want. Nobody really knows because everybody does what they have to in this society, not what they want. If you do what you have to, one way or another, you will find what you want eventually.
Every time I watch Stephen Fry I'm filled with a mix of admiration and resentment for the same reason; Hes extremely intelligent. Thats not to say I'm an idiot or that anyone else here is but that through a mix of genetics, opportunity and privilege he has become an individual of a vastly superior knowledge, wit and charm that captivates anyone he takes the time to talk to. Thats something all of us can aspire to but in reality very few of us will ever have.
I like Stephen Fry to some degree, but being afraid is anything but wonderful. Being afraid ties you up in knots, and can make life very hard and counter productive.
He is the absolute sweetest. I think he's great because he's so vulnerable, and that's why he's such an adorable teddybear to an entire nation, and possibly the world. Because he doesn't have any false pretexts about him like most people. He's not hiding behind anything, and that's wonderful and encouraging, as a human being, to watch. Does anybody know where that interview that he did was, where he said the key to happiness is "stop feeling sorry for yourself"?
i favorited this vid a while back, and watching it again, i feel like maybe i should start everyday with this video, reminding me being afraid is wonderful because it means i care.
I hate to admit it, but he is right. Everyone is equally afraid of life and whether or not they will get it right, those who say they are not are either deluding themselves or are extremely ignorant.
To aspire is to aim toward something aware that you may never get to the destination but that you will at least get somewhere, perhaps further than if you had not dared to aim so high. I will likely never be as clever or as charming as alot of people in the world. If I actually convinced myself I was going to reach such a lofty goal the likelihood is that I would be aiming toward nothing but disillusionment from failure. This is counter-productive to motivating such a pursuit.
Stephen Fry is one of the only human beings that could make me question my sexuality; not because I find him terribly attractive, but because he is so intelligent, gentle, witty and funny that it must be a constant pleasure to be living with that man.
What he talks of makes me think of Catcher in the Rye, Caufield thinks he's different and the only kid to feel isolated, but isolation is a phase a lot of great people have gone through, good stuff.
Mine too! I find it weird that there are so many people out there, who have helpt me get over SO much shit in my life, yet they will never even know that I existed! (Like Stephen Fry, Till Lindemann, Eddie Izzard, Eichiro Oda, David Bowie...)
you can actually surf through random Stephen's youtube videos and raise you IQ as well as general knowledge of the world and how it works. Also you become a better person. He is simply magical, a truly magnificent individual..
@sageSPH My thoughts exactly :) What he said about everyone being equally uncertain and afraid in life is so comforting. All too often I find myself feeling like I'm carrying the Q-Tip when everyone else has a big club. Stephen described exactly the way I feel.
I personaly don't, but many gays can find this very inspirationnal. A gay who is insecure, who felt dirty, who was mentally abuse but rose to become so much that being gay has become but a mere side note in the mind of the viewers and admirers. Yes, I think some people gives a shit about this part of his life.
I'm almost 20 and I'm worried about what I'll do with my life and figuring out who I am. I know that's common for someone my age, but I've been getting more insecure lately, perhaps more so than most of my teenage years... It was a mistake to keep my options open for so long. Now I don't know what I'll do with my life! D:
Yeah, the real cocky ones are more cocky, EXCEPT for Christopher Hitchens! Hitchens was the KING of cocky but at the same time, the KING of reason and argument. He knew no-one could take him on and live to glee about it.
@MCshlthead Because you have either been unfortunate, or are later in developing confidence and finding yourself. His point is there is no innate difference, and nothing which says you can't have all the friends you want.
There's a mistake that you find yourself through school or leave school, go into higher education and find the person you're going to be for the rest of your life and gain the confidence you need through doing so. Do you think your parents weren't a little insecure the first time they became parents? Fry is so right about everyone else having a club and you've got a cue tip, that idea that there was a lesson at school that everybody had and you missed out on and you'll never get back.
But not everyone is going to, and not will do, and not everyone deserves to. There are some people who do have that platform who don't deserve it, but I think it's pretty certain that Stephen Fry does deserve it.
I want to learn for the sake of learning. I don't ever want to get a job, but I know that living in a modern capitalist society I have little option but to do so. Luckily in the present day people usually don't stay in the same job long. I want to at least do something meaningful. Not having the qualifications to do so and being forced to do rubbish jobs is what I'm really afraid of... So now I'm focusing on getting experience. No time like the present.
Apparently low self-confidence and fear accompany high levels of serotonin in the brain (whether it's causative or in response to the fear or low self-esteem, I don't know).
This video made me find out that he's gay. And, frankly, it was merely one more thing that I now know about him, and thus bears absolutely no change on my opinion of the guy. We need some more people to think like him in some respects, gay or straight.
Just thought I would put this here since I found it quite amuzing. In the very start of the video, you see the guy's last name. It's Stroumboulopoulos. Well mates, that's greek for "son of the very chubby guy" (Yes, very chubby. Not fat. Was it fat, it would have been Chondropoulos).
@echo599ismybitch Hello!! Just having lunch I had a Hoisin duck wrap.. It was a touch too sweet for my liking. Have you tried the Tescos Roast Beef sandwich? My god that is a fantastic sammich damn near perfect! I will have to by one for lunch in work tomorrow... Right I have to get on...

If you aren't afraid and uncertain, then you haven't given life a whole lot of consideration.
Stephen is my therapist.
This man, without fail, always manages to cheer me up.
Loved this! ..So refreshing and life affirming. Fry is one of the few celebs who appear genuine when they are being interviewed.
I've met Stephen Fry and he is honestly one of the nicest people I've ever met.. he's like this all the time.
Stephen is a wonderful compassionate person and listening to his eloquent explanations of the human condition are pure joy.

Fry is brilliant, a genuinely good guy.

"The wonderful secret is that we're all equally afraid and uncertain. That isn’t a bad thing, it's a wonderful thing" - Man, I love that.
