I liked the melancholy end of your simulation diary. It also reminded me of by first RPG book when I was in my mid-teens. I stretched its use far beyond the publishers intent, but that's what you do when you are a money strapped kid.

@@TheNiall666 My first game was TSR's Conan boxset. I extendedly borrowed it from a friend's dad. By the time he got it back he was upset with how worn it was. So I bought it off of him for $12 or something. After that I wanted to branch into other genres and games so I bought from the store a sourcebook for Shadowrun 2ed, "Fields of Fire". I didn't know it was only a sourcebook or even what a sourcebook was at the time. So I tried to extrapolate the core rules from the expanded rules in the sourcebook. By the time I bought SR 2e Core the poor sourcebook needed tape to help hold it together.

@@jacobgrimm9475 Our group started in the early 1980's with Basic D&D (Moldvay), before swiftly moving on to the BECMI boxed sets, Runequest, AD&D, Call of Cthulhu, and one members homebrew sci-fi system. I still have the fondest memory of 'Moldvay' D&D because it seemed fresh and exciting, if a little deadly for characters.

I love the Comic book / Magazine style of the adventure. It’s just so much more fun and old-school compared to the huge module books that completely overwhelm you if you wanna run it.
I would love it if WotC made more booklets like these. 10 - 15 bucks a pop would be amazing.

Really wish they would just call them ' Spell Ranks' or 'Spell Tiers' - it would at least make the jargon less confusing. ( Yes, once you pick it up it isn't an issue- but for a DM having to have the same conversation with new players over and over ? No thanks.)

    Group of 5? Starter Set.
    Group of 1? Essentials Kit.
    My kids love both.

    1. Fantastic video. We written, filmed, edited and so forth. I understand the story you are telling and felt you have done a fantastic job in your project.
    2. With full respect to the concept: while I haven't used this specific starter, I can say that the 4e Red Box and other starters I have purchased in the past tend to have the resources to help players expand world building and tables for randomized dungeons - which can also be adopted to influence your creativity as a DM.
It is clear in your review that there are enough monsters in the box for you to craft further and different adventures - which in turn should allow this "simulation" to go far deeper than it already has.

Thanks for your fresh and creative review of this product. It is quite entertaining.
I personally see the cons you mention, those which harken back to older editions such as alignment and experience points, as positive features because it connects me to concepts I think are essential for the D&D experience. Without such connections it's just not D&D.
5 classes is more than enough for me. Be creative with your character descriptions and the mechanical differences (or lack of same) takes on less importance. There is an infinite number of possibilities when creative thought is applied.
I love the way you recast the standard review approach here and also how you turn the box into a dice tray. Applying the same level of creativity to the game's admittedly brief contents and you can have years of fun right here. It's a "starter" kit.😉

That was fun! I'm a bit shocked people have such a degree of difficulty with the spell level system. But I've had over 30 years to get used to it and almost all my rpg friends at least 20. 😀
I've played B/X, 2nd, 3rd, 3.5, PF, 4th and 5th since it came out. I really loved 5th ed with few reservations for years. I felt it was a welcome development. Now I've had a break for one year and not missing 5e terribly. We'll see when I get back to it. The essentials kit might be a nice comeback.

Regardless of the creepy undertones (I honestly thought were gonna have a draconic panic), i agree that the essentials kit is something worth picking up tho imho I prefer the starter set for its adventure which flows much more like an actual adventure and has premades for newcomers but essential kit's sidekicks are not something to overlook and the additional dnd beyond content's a plus.
Id combine those two together for one big ol campaign with some adjustments. The only gripe i have is that LMoP/DoIP doesnt have as much community addons as say CoS or DiA buuuut these two adventures are great starting points for other adventures.
Edit: itd be funny to run other systems using this adventure. OSR LMoP/DoIP anyone?

Uh Dave? Are you sure you uploaded this thing at the end of 2019 instead of sometime mid- to late-2020 after the madness had set in? Just checking. 😁 I've got the two Starter Set boxes I thought about giving to people … ended up not doing that … but I never picked up the Essentials Kit box.
Admittedly, I kind of thought you were going to do more with this-how would you homebrew enough to keep you entertained, etc?

Did you play this solo? If so, how did you avoid spoilers and did you use oracles? I'm trying to learn how to solo adventures and trying to read them without getting spoiled is pretty tough. Loving your videos btw! The highlighting and notes in the background with your commentary is very soothing. The shorter time of the videos is so refreshing compared to a lot of other dnd style videos.

There is a guide called DM yourself by Tom Scutt that gives you a hand with solo running premade adventures with detailed tips for Dragon of Icespire Peak (which the essentials kit is a must get for solo due to sidekick rules though if you have LMoP you can download the essentials kit ruleboom pdf for free which has the sidekick rules).

5e has been out for over 5 years now. Production rate for new products was actually slow and methodical until the last quarter of 2018. Did you not play ANY other edition beyond 1st? The splat book bloat was far worse. I really liked all of the extra stuff you did with this box set. Sincere kudos. But you concentrated far too much on nit picking in this video and there’s so much more positive things about this set that you didn’t mention. It’s such a concise, versatile, and well contained sand box adventure for beginners to start with. Just saying that your overall tone was unnecessarily negative. I’m interested to hear how someone with clear DM talent hasn’t tried 5e before this.
