I was 15 when I heard him sing this for the first time and I think that's when I truly understood how a song can move someone to tears by the end. I had seen musicals and such, but there is no comparison to the vocal range and richness of his voice and his performance choices. No other version has come close to moving me to tears as his version does. Truly a brilliant artist and a treasure.

For over 50 years this amazing and inspiring song has been so important to me . For most of those years it was Richard Kiley , the original star on Broadway that captured my heart and stayed with me . Tonight, on CZcams , I saw Brian Stokes Mitchell sing it . It floored me with its grace , power and beauty . He's the very best at it . Now I've got to check out much more of his enormous talent thru song. George Lewis, Sr

I have felt the same way about this song. I remember when Jim Nabors sang it as Gomer Pyle on TV and I also so it on TV from Richard Kiley in the 1960's. I've watched it lately with Elvis, Sinatra, Williams and a few others. It just doesn't seem to lose anything as many times as I see it.
I also watch Susan Boyle audition, I dreamed a dream. The reaction on peoples faces tells the story.

such a beautiful and brilliant performance by a magnificent actor/singer. Stokes (as we used to call him) draws up in and weaves a tale of majestic magnitude simply by making sense of what he was singing about and really taking the time to build this song with ups and downs. There was only one wish if I could have made (and Richard Kiley fell into the same trap) the last note should have been a third or a fifth higher. the last note was too comfortably placed in both performers ranges and something a little higher would have turned a good solid ending into a Powerhouse Finale Note the way someone like Judy Garland would tap into to transform the song with an unbelievable amazing ending.
