For people who don't mind deadheading and have some temporary gaps to fill with annuals, I always love california poppies as a low water choice. In the NW USA we have a native fescue that turns blue/silver in the summer as well, called Festuca roemeri. What love about it is that it's brillantly lush green all winter, when other plants are dead, then turns blue later before going dormant when it gets really hot. Host plant for our native skippers as well!

Thank you, Rosy. Putting the plants together is very useful as I often don't have a clue how to combine the plants to give a nice overall effect. I would be useful if there are plants that are suitable for dry but not free draining soil i.e. clay in hot weather.

Lots of good suggestions here, thanks Rosy. I’m in the US and will definitely be looking for interesting sedums for a dry sunny spot I’ve got.

For me in the South East in clay I get dry soil in hot summers, but it gets wet in the Winter and some plants just got off, despite my soil being well amended. Difficult to find perennials that can cope with both extremes.

Not every DRY spot is always also a SUNNY spot.

I've had the burgundy sedum for 10+ years and it's a really good one and not invasive. Blue fescue is also a pretty grass and easy to grow.

Can these going full sun, under a huge fir tree which has burned the grass underneath?
