I get why they only gave us 4 though, it always felt weird/bad most of the classes got 2 or 3 subclasses but cleric and wizard got 7 or 8. Giving all the classes the same number of subclasses feels right, but if we kept all the wizard that would mean 96 subclasses in the book. That would be nice, sure, but a hell of a lot more work and time to redesign and refine and playtest. Sure they will update them in the future, but til then there are guifelines to adapt the old subclasses to the new book and im sure most DMs would be fine with players using the new version of savant for necromancers or conjurers.
I agree, but it would have been nice if instead focusing on just one school they focused on styles of magic, like War Magic, Scribes, Bladesinging, and an Illusion/Enchanment subclass, and get away from specific schools. I'd want a Necromancer subclass but they seem to not want "evil" character options in the PHB.
Maybe have a Specialtist subclass or feat that allows you to narrow in on one school if you want down the road.
I agree. I also like the symmetry with the subclasses they've chosen for some of the classes. Evocation Vs Abjuration. A focus on Destructive magic or protective magic. Divination vs Illusion. Magic to reveal and magic to deceive. The druid has similar symmetry going on with Land and Sea, Moon and Stars. I like it
@@TheRealWilliamWhite YES. So tired of spell schools as the only thing keeping wizards apart. Styles/traditions are much better and more flavorful.
Thanks for banging these out Ted. The Warlock you were clearly hurting but goter’done. Thanks man.
I’m assuming it’s because his best doggo friend unfortunately passed. He made a community post that same day about it iirc which is pretty sad.
I'd argue that if Earth based spells should get anything extra, it should be forcefully moving or shunting characters around. That way you'd be controlling the battlefield both figuratively AND literally.
Maybe instead of fireball you make "sink hole", difficult terrain in the area for the round, bludgeoning damage, failed save also knocks prone.
Boy, I'd like to play an illusionist now.
Sounds Way cool now.
Same. I was always tempted because of the level 14 feature (which has to be one of the coolest features in the game) but the rest was ass. Now the whole things good. Some serious shenanigans are gonna go down on a table that includes an illusionist
5e has a "bleed" effect called wounding. Some monsters have it (typically Fiends) but Players get access to it via magic items like a Sword of Wounding. So it wouldn't be too hard to create a condition or another similar house rule using those pre-existing rules.
@@BigFrakingSword great point!
Much love Ted, your hard work is always appreciated!
They should treat the schools of magic like a "patron" in a more warlock like build where you have options to mix and match. Battle mage, blade singer, scribe, a summoner or Something? Yet your character has a savant bent towards one of the schools. Combining a chosen "school of spell" and another "class of magic" switching off gaining features on different levels. For example level one you're school of illusion at level three start blade singing level four minor improvements to illusionist that has a built in scaling feature at later levels level six blade singer extra attack. Wizards could be a conjuration battle mage or diviner scribe. I feel like even if you are a school based wizard most people will still resort to staples regardless. Give them a little more diversity to the versatility of wizards.
Thats a pretty good idea
They closed the infinite abjuration spells loophole in Arcane Ward cuz it says you need to use a spell slot now so no shenanigans with deep gnome or the mage armor invocation anymore
I look forwardc to seeing what loopholes people come up with for new exploits.
@@Dunybrookand those will be errataed too. Errata and patches are the only way foe a game to stay healthy
I love blur that would be a great choice f it meets the criteria.
Blur, mirror image and invisibility are all potential level 2 spells that take an action to cast.
@@JasonCorfman Thanks, good to know.
Longstrider might be a good spell to take with the 1st level spell mastery. Sure, it likely won't be cast in combat, but as it doesn't cost a spell slot, you essentially can cast it every hour on everyone in your party, giving everyone in the party a 10-foot speed bump that is basically permanent.
Really worried about what they'll do with the Order of the Scribe once they get around to that subclass
It's great to see that they seem to finally have found a good niche for the illusionist as the 'summoner' wizard
eath eruption: cast: 1 action/instant, range 120, 20'sphere, save: con for half damage, damgae: 6d6 bludgeoning
the con save is because everyone in range gets peppered with lumps of earth, dropped the damage fromfirball as it bypases rouge and barb abilities
The main issue with illusionists has always been DM fiat/bias.
Edit: 50:23
Now all they need now is for people to actually READ THE BOOK!
Basically the potent cantrip feature is the wizard closing his eyes and saying I'm going to shoot you I bet you I'm not going to miss.
31:00 so if the failed counterspell/dispel magic doesn't use up the spell slot used to cast it, does that mean the arcane ward isn't charged?
Question that might seem obvious. With resistance applying to the ward, does that mean if it gets through the ward, you take the full damage left over, or does your resistance cut the remaining damage on half again? I'm asking because one makes it an even better buff to this feature. However, it may be too good if that happened.
I would assume not. You typically don't get to double dip like that.
@@normalguynamedX that's what I figured with it being applied beforehand but it's always best to be clear
Yeah I imagine that since the total damage is getting halved BEFORE hitting the ward, any left over damage would just carry over like usual.
Hexblades are probably going to be very different once they update it.
Are the Illusory Summon Beast and Summon Fey malleable as well?
Why do we still not have a healing wizard subclass?
Haven't they completely gotten rid of blade singer? Like no plans of bringing it back in the future
I feel like they missed multiple opportunities with some of the classes. Whether that was they "ran out of time" on account of the 50th anniversary/10th anniversary or something else, but the had some bangers, but others were just wet farts.
Yeah I get it Wizard was a pretty solid class, but so was Rogue and they got cunning strike. Wizard got...really not much. They had the opportunity with the whole 'create a spell' in the UA but they dropped it because it had issues. Mostly issues around balance and a lack of rules. They could have kept it simple and expanded upon it later, but would have given folks who've been playing ten years or even less a reason to go back to hitting up a wizard.
Thank you for taking the time to create and post these videos, they along with other people’s material help me determine what to spend my funds on and in what order.
Granted I am not privy to the eternal machinations of WOTC/Hasbro (to me they’re synonymous) and all I have are theories based on past history of the two organizations (including 4th edition) and their complete destruction of the Orc race (I don’t use species as species can’t breed non-hybrids and differing species can consume one another without being cannibals). I may be off on what they’re doing, but that will come out in the wash so to speak. That said the loss of Necromancer subclass in favor of the Illusionist or Diviner gives me no reason to rush and buy the new products at their asking price. I’ll wait until the price drops on Amazon or go to a discount store and purchase the products.
Different species breed often in history. That's how ligers and modern humans exist.
@@armorclasshero2103 ligers is a man made hybrid just like the mule. While the differing species creating man is a theory.
@@MountainManMinute 1) No. 2) You clearly don't know what theory means in a scientific context. We literally have neanderthal DNA, bud.
@@armorclasshero2103 I absolutely know what it means and it is nothing more than a theory. A theory that cannot be be proven and is only pushed through one’s personal belief. You are free to believe that if you will you’re not free to push your belief onto others!
@@MountainManMinute LOL. Guess I was right. You don't know what a theory is in scientific context. 🤣🤣 Humans didn't 'make' ligers, doofus. They just kept lions and tigers in the same enclosure. And again we have confirmed genetic proof that modern humans have neanderthal DNA.
Anyone getting a “sorting hat” vibe from Ted right now? 😆 He strikes me as a Ravenclaw…
Probably Disquise Self and Wither & Bloom for Spell Mastery although all the fun has gone out of that 18th level ability and being a wizard at high levels is suddenly much less appealing now.
Don't forget bladesinger and warmage
I want my spellsword!
TLDR: rangers are essentially the same
Ik you probably would still do ranger but don’t waist your time covering ranger because it pretty much all Tasha’s stuff add and then some things involving hunter’s mark at levels 13,17,20. Then subclass 2/4 are just reprints (well gloom stalker just got one change so it not just beginning round you benefit from its extra damage). Beast master is just Tasha’s changes and your beast companion can benefit from some spell (when no idea). Hunter just look at hunter in 5e with possible one less option, can change on a long rest, and a small benefit of hunter mark (no idea when.)
I'm sorry but at this point I feel like they should give a massive discount or even a credit towards buying the new books if you already owned Tasha's cauldron of everything
Welcome to capitalism
The Wizard class changes were good as were 3 of the 4 subclasses. I am unhappy with the Abjurer tho. Arcane Ward and Project Ward should have been combined into 1 feature. This was done for the War domain cleric's Guided Strike/War God's Blessing feature (and one other subclass that I cannot remember in the playtest). It's using the same HP pool for both so its not actually more powerful to do this and limited spell slots means you can't repair the ward consistently. It feels like the Abjurer has only 3 features in the subclass. The level 10 feature seems fine but how good it is depends on whether or not the Bonus Action spellcasting rule remains in effect. If it is, then that part of the feature is little more than you can cast an additional cantrip on that turn or dash/ disengage/ dodge. That's pretty mid. The counterspell part of spellbreaker should have been its own feature and the abjurer should be able to impose disadvantage on the save for lets say prof bonus times/day. Without this or some change to Heightened Spell, the Abjurer is inferior to the base line Sorc at Counterspell tho they dont lose a spell slot if they fail.
Regarding the Bleed condition...
I miss Ongoing damage from 4e... get hit with an earth shard, suffer Ongoing 2 damage, Save Ends
One question, where is the Conjurer, Enchanter and Necromancer subclasses?
Coming in 3 years or so with how little content Wotc releases?
Yeah, probably. They decided to give each class 4 subclasses in the new book, which is generally great as the old PHB only gave 2-3 subclasses to most of them. But it does really suck for clerics and wizards who had way more subclasses in the original
Honestly, ranger doesn't deserve to exist as a stand alone class.
