@@yumyum215 so, I’m hearing impaired. It’s not something I was born with. It just started developing in my 20s. Unfortunately I can’t afford hearing aids. Because I already don’t hear that well, people with really strong accents are usually really hard for me to understand. But that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with the person or their accent! I still think their accents are perfect and I respect them and their cultures. She should be proud of her accent and her culture.

Kevin: Listen to anglo music everyday. I wish different genres of music, but listen to anglo music frequently( your own playlist or an anglo music radiostation in your country or an anglo radio out there). One of the best way of learning English correctly and of making your ear gets used to it.👍

I just love the different accents they have. That's the beauty of a language. Countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua all speak the same language, but overtime have each created their own variety of said language that makes them proud of who they are. Language is a wonderful thing. And by learning other languages, we learn more about each other, and open up to the other cultures surrounding us. Making us all glad that we're on a planet as great as this one. Showing just how important it is to save it.

Hell nah. Whenever I hear my compatriots speak English with strong accents I literally want to hurl. It sounds terrible. Perhaps some people like it. Well I don't. That's why I really try to speak without accent.

@@ngenglee149 Some light versions that still sound natural and even more important still sound like actual English - sure. E.g. I really like to hear a mild Southern accent. But thick accents never sound good to me. And often limit my ability to understand people. They are okay for comedic purposes as long as I have subtitles. But not for actual conversation. I had experience of scarcely understanding a bunch of Indian guys I had to liaise with at work.

To be fair to Irin, the way they said squirrel is the British way to say it. The English taught in places like Singapore, India, and Europe is British English. Had a feeling Hayleen was actually born in the states based off her very American accent, most likely Miami. And us Cubans say refrigerador the same way the rest do, don't know what she's on about. Unlike other ethnic Cubans in the US, I was born and raised in the NYC metro. And for a few years of my life when I was a kid, I lived in NJ in a neighborhood surrounded by Dominicans, so my Spanish is a mix of Dominican and Cuban words with a New York accent. Cuban Spanish is influenced by Canarian Spanish thanks to Canarian migration which can confirm as my great grandma was from the Canary Islands. There's also African influence like in the phrase ¿Que bola, asere? (What's up, buddy?) in which asere and bola come from the Nigerian Efik and Igbo languages respectively.
NYC is actually pretty important to Cuba because it's where the Cuban revolutionaries like José Martí stayed before returning to Cuba to fight for independence. NYC is also where the Cuban flag was designed! As a gift to NYC, the Cuban government gave a statue of José Martí on horseback in 1965 which you can find on the southern side of Central Park by 6th Ave.
I agree with you about Irin she has little to none accent.
I would have never guessed she was Cuban if they wouldn’t have said it. My case is a bit different as I came to the US 10 years ago and although I can speak fluently there’s still a lot vocabulary that I find extremely difficult to pronounce.
I just came back from a trip to NYC and believe me, finding Jose Martí statue on 6th avenue was pure coincidence. Didn’t know the story behind it so thanks for sharing!

I’m glad they pointed out that the British pronunciation of squirrel does include the ‘i’ sound. Just goes to show that even with this looking at Spanish accents speaking English, there’s still discrepancies between the English speaking English accents 😂 I was confused when she was bopping the girls for saying it the British way as I’d never say it as swqurrrrl

I have a disability where it's almost imposible to understand Eng./Spa with strong accents.
Even our Country/Southern accent is hard for me to understand, sometimes.
The first two girls was pronuncing "squeerel"which doesn't exist. Her "i" sounds like an " i". British "i" is soft,but it is near American "i",so the two first girls are wrong.

The ladies did great! This took me back to when I was younger. My family travelled a lot so I learned Spanish first because I was born in a Spanish speaking country, then I was introduced to German which I forgot when we left Germany, but English OMG, even though my father was a native English speaker I remember struggling with the fact that the words were not pronounced as seen, like the word the girls mentioned, "Colonel" and many others. Until today I have to say certain words in my head and seperate them into chunks to be able to spell them correctly, "Wednesday" is one of them, would always get it marked wrong on my assignments lol. Reading in English was something else, I remember the feeling of wanting to cry in school because of the stress of wanting to read faster in English, and it didn't help that I barely did any schooling before second grade. I remember that my teacher called my mom one time to tell her that I did great work but I did not finish my assignments on time. My mom asked me and I told her that I wanted to do things perfect, which looking back now I was being too hard on myself at such a young age😅 just because I wanted to do a good job. I eventually came to enjoy reading in English a lot but I certainly still read faster in Spanish. The great thing is that I was a great imitator as a child so I eventually learned to sound like a native, but then now it will happen that sometime during the year someone will ask me to repeat a word and I have to repeat and enunciate slowly, it doesn't happen very often now but when it does I become that little girl again self-conscious of the way I speak. I understand many of the girls' sentiments. Keep it up girls! You are all beautiful no matter what language you speak❤
cuz in english we don't pronounce the first d and the second e in wednesday, we say it as wens-day, but if you are typing/ writing the word you'll put wed-nes-day
Never lose your accent. In fact, accents are beautiful. I am Brazilian and I like my accent. It's part of me. North Americans also have accents when they are out of USA.

Yo llegué a tener un acento nativo. Está bien lo que has dicho; sin embargo, no se trata de deshacerte de tu acento porque como cualquier otro idioma, un acento se puede mejorar. En mi opinión, deberías mejorar tu pronunciación, no tienes que mejorar tu acento, aunque es opcional. Cuando alguien no te entiende porque eso sucede, tú deberías mejorar tu pronunciación o tu acento porque si nadie te entiende, no importa si tienes acento. Como profesor de Lingüística y literatura, te recuerdo que deberías sobrepasar eso. No necesitas un acento americano o británico, pero un inglés que sea claro. Acento y pronunciación son dos cosas diferentes, pero son como primos. Todos tenemos un acento, pero al acento de alguien que no es nativo, siempre será muy diferente a un acento de un región de donde se habla el lenguaje.

En mi caso, yo soy una chica de 14 años, soy cubana y vivo en España sin embargo en la clase de ingles siempre los profesores me distinnguieron por hablar con un acento británico muy marcado, en francés igual, tal vez es porque se me dan muy bien los idiomas y suelo leer o ver peliculas o videos en ese idioma, sin embargo mis padres al hablar el ingles tienen un acento extranjero XD

The thing about English is that it has a lot of borrowed words from other languages so pronoucings words are not always going to match the spelling. It can even be hard for native speakers as well. But you all are doing well. Keep up the good work.

We pronounce the ‘i’ in squirrel in England, the girls who got the pronunciation wrong were mispronouncing the ‘sq’ because when you have q + u it sounds like k + w… but all of their pronunciations were better than my attempts at Spanish words 😂👏🏽

Oh My Lord, Thank you Irene for admitting that Spanish grammar is hard!!! Spanish is my third language and I tell nativos that Spanish grammar is the hardest, English grammar is super confusing but Spanish just another level. Nativos thinks I exaggerate it. Conjugations in Spanish leaves me T_T

This was really nice. I'm dominican, born and raised but studied english throughout my life from early school years up until my adulthood. I'm so thankful to my mom for pushing hard on me to never stop learning and studying. Thanks to being bilingual I've been able to get a good job and meet a lot of amazing people.💯🇩🇴
I'm Hispanic and even though I lived in the USA since I was 8 years old I still have a strong spanish accent when I speak English. One word that was difficult for me to say was "could" because I always pronounced it the way I read it, it took me 20 years to find the secret, drop the "o" and the "l" and pronounce it "KUD". It worked like a charm.
Sounds silly sometimes but the best way to get the pronunciation right is by mirroring what you hear, imitating it and even over acting it out helps a lot, when I started doing it I felt kinda stupid but for me, it worked.
They should've had noise canceller headsets so that they won't be able to copy each others pronunciations 😁

I'm from Puerto Rico and I moved in USA since I was like 8, I don't have like that much accent i mean but just not that much and i actually love English and I've had friends that's speak English they were really nice people and i love how U.S people are so calm and loyal. I'm in love with English, people who moves or want to learn/speak English should really try it and don't be embarrassed of their accent it might at first be hard, but once you don't give up you will make it.🇺🇲🇵🇷

As a Canadian who was raised by full Colombian family , I can easily saw that learning English first was hard but it got easier cause I learned it at 6 years old which makes kids learn languages faster than adults 😅
Having an accent is not bad as long as what you are saying can be understood. I work with Indian and they have a strong accent but are super smart people. I love my Spanish. I can communicate with anyone with no issues.

Spanish was my first language and learned English as a young child yet I still can’t pronounce series, variety & Aries correctly 😂. All the ladies are doing great!
I always had problems saying “deteriorate” I’m sure there are harder words to pronounce but this is my Cryptonite. 😀
As a native English speaker in the United States I felt all the ladies did great! There are words I even have trouble saying sometimes so please don't feel bad. I grew up with my dad whose fifth language he learned fluently was English. He first learned Russian, Greek, German, Italian, and the English so I grew up with him sometimes mispronouncing English words or phrases. I remember him saying how hard English could be to learn because of words that sound alike such as, pear, pair, and pare. And the word cobweb would through him off, saying it's not a cob of corn, he would sometimes say cow web instead. I remember him saying this lady thought she was two good shoes and one bad foot. I'm thinking what? Then he repeated it. Then I realized he was trying to say, she thinks she's miss goody two shoes, like she's better than everyone else! It's an expression. Please embrace your accents! I love them all! 💗

@@glee_again2594 I know it sounds unbelievable to know five languages. My dad was born in Athens, Greece and his parents were from Russia. So they spoke Russian at home and my dad spoke Greek in school. He didn't realize that they were two different languages. Then they moved to Germany and they learned German. Then they escaped Germany to Italy during WW2. Then learned Italian. Then then emigrated to the United States in 1946 where he Then learned English. My dad was in high school when he came to the USA and they gave him Spanish class but he didn't really know English. So then they gave him extra English classes instead. I wish he taught me some. I know English, of course, Spanish and sign language. I love different languages and cultures. Stay well! ❤

When I was in school trying to learn German, I had a HELL of a time with the 'u-umlaut' sound. In English it's somewhere between 'oo' [as in 'spoon'] and 'uh' [as in 'stump']. My attempts to learn it made my teacher laugh because he said I sounded Danish. 😁

I recently saw an article that delved a little bit inot why some words like "colonel" or "debt" have weird letters in them. Apparently "colonel" is derived from the Old French word "coronel," but that is in turn derived from Latin's "colonnel" (leader of a column of troops) and some group of Medieval scholars decided that the word should have the "old school Latin" spelling to honor its roots, despite it not actually being pronounced as written.
"Debt" is similar. In Old French it was "dette" but in Latin it was "debitum" and well.... yeah. Silly Medieval scholars and sillier folks who listened to them.... ;-)

And in Sweden we say debitera (for a formal payment) with stress on the last e-syllable. So inspired by the Latin form of the word but using a Paris French melody (which slowly started to be regarded as one of our stress patterns between the 1500s and 1700s).

Honestly though! I didn't realize just how hard it could be for non-English speakers to say some of the words that I just say without thinking about it. Mad respect to these people for try their best. BTW, I hate saying rural.

Everyone has an accent! Even those with American English. There are sooo many different accents. I personally give props to anyone who is willing to and can speak another language.
Linguistically, languages learned before 15 in a recognizable accent in that language have a chance to sound native. After 15 studies show it’s near impossible for it to be perfect.
I’ve noticed a “newer” bilingual English accent that is of Latinos who are born in the US speaking both languages.
It’s like a new and cool accent that has evolved from immigrant lines. If I hear someone speak this English and don’t see them, I know their other native tongue is Spanish. Both English and Spanish are their first languages. :)

Liam, the US is over 9 million square miles. There are different regions with different dialects and accents.
The Colombian girl did it so good. She's really confident and got every word right (I think so).
I feel proud since I'm a Colombian who's still learning English -mostly by myself- and I don't need subtitles to understand what people are saying anymore. Unfortunately, I still lack that confidence of her. I'mma work on it.

I have a bachelor's degree in Spanish and used to teach ESL, with a vast majority of my students coming from Spanish-speaking countries, but I never used a mallet when they mispronounced a word. The words misprnounced seemed to vary from student to student. Some of the mistakes I remember are shrimp (three consecutive consonants), against (ditto), dentist (transposed the last two consonants), young (proounced like my name, John), apartment(stuck a vowel sound between the t and m), glad (prounced the g like a c) and lemonade (prounced like lemon day).
