What grit sandpaper did you use before you started the color to smooth out the surface and then after when you blended the painters tape line?

Another trick to get the grain to pop more is to stain the whole guitar black then sanded down. The black stain remains in the deep grain. Then you can apply the lighter colors.

I really didn't think this was going to work, When I saw the tape I did not think you were going to get it to blend. Wet sanding it was what saved it! When I do fades/blends with water based stains I use a rag and do the blending while still wet. I will put one color on then the next and so on, I blend them as I go along while they are still wet. IMO you get a better blend. I have gotten great results that way even very good sunburst finishes. I have been practicing with sea sponges for some crazy finishes/blends. I have gotten some interesting patterns on scrap wood. Next project I am going to give it a shot. I have all kind of painting equipment Spray Guns, Touch up Guns and airbrushes even though you get great results the prep and clean up and the fact you need very good ventilation makes hand staining a blessing. I have a couple body blanks laying around for a few future projects I an going to try the sea sponge method on one of them. Wish you could post pics on CZcams replies.

Love your videos, have been building electric guitars for a little over 2 years using aniline dyes that are alcohol soluble as they don't raise grain. I have found using a small rag made out of a cotton sheet or good quality paper towel does a great job adding the color to the wood. Use disposable gloves so as not to color your fingers. You can blend easily into each color using this method using one rag/sheet for each color and then a new one wetted with alcohol to create all sorts of blending.

Love your videos. I have been building electric guitars for a little over 2 years having been a woodworker for over 30 years. I have found using alcohol soluble aniline dyes work great for creating colors on the wood. You can use a small piece of a cotton or good paper towel to dip into the mixed dye and then to blend different colors you can use a different one wetted with alcohol to create blending from one color to another. Beauty of this method is does not raise grain as much as water soluble dyes and it drys faster and less sanding after coloration.

If you try another kit with highly figured wood, there’s a trick to make it look sort of PRS like, all three coats are watered down (to make it a transparent color), but the first coat has more stain in it and gets wiped off quickly. The next two are the same mix. I really makes the top have more of a 3D look. (Trying on some scrap wood for practice is probably a good idea, and blue shop towels are good for wiping the wet stain off.)

i found with staining there's a point that it doesn't absorb any more colour, so you can get quite heavy with the blending while it's still wet, sand back a little, and repeat..that is if you're going for more intense colours...it's only a draw back if you have a thin veneer. If you want to make the grain really pop, a base coat of watered down black stain sanded back, then colour over the top, will leave a really high contrast but a similar intensity of the top colour. Interesting seeing you mask off the separate colours...neat idea for keeping the transition point fairly even..i'll have to try that

  • @andrewjackson9417

Very neat finish, the Solo kits are really impressive. Their fretwork is better than a lot of expensive guitars. The headless ones I have use a completely different system for putting on the strings. The ball end is at the bridge and the string clamps into the nut. The tuners are horizontal. I think I'll just honey stain the bodies, they're ash and very nice, then do an oil/wax finish.

I bought a cheapo, Chinese, headless kit a long time ago. It came with R-Trem clone bridge (Music Overlord, if I remembered correctly). When I put it all together, the strings were way too high which truss rod adjustment does not help. I then route the bridge a little more and it's too low. So I ended up throwing it away....
My lesson here is I should have started with more simpler build, like strat-style guitar. I was too naive back then.
PS. later I bought a nice white Spirit with R-Trem. I'm still thinking about swapping the pickup though. The Steinberger-branded ones that come with the guitar is not really my liking, but I like the look of it on the guitar. Maybe I should put a set of EMG on it.

I'll be interested to see how you feel about that bridge/tuning system. I had one that looked identical on a headless guitar I bought from Ali Express. I hated it. Relying on the little tool held on by magnets to tune was a pain (and a fear for live stuff - if you drop the little tool you are toast). And I felt the tuning was not fine grained enough for my liking. I like the concept of a tuning system that works on the "non-ball end" of the string, but I much prefer a system I can easily tune by hand. And setting up intonation was a bit of a pain, but I can live with that since you never really have to mess with it unless you change string brands and/or gauges.
