Michael been doing a lot of digging regarding this record.Apparently the original Eye in the sky was recorded on Analogue tape & then mixed down to create a digital master recorded on the Sony PCM 1610 system .
That would explain the Og is brighter & has more high end.
So SpeakersCorner & Mofi get the Analogue master tape obviously not the digital master.
Which explains why they sound so different.
To me the original has more magic, more transparent & punchier even though it’s for the most part digital.
The Mofi is better than Speakers corner.
Loads of bottom end & detail, perfect pressing.
Listened to the album for 20 ys.
Original sounds more Analogue.I know crazy right.👍

Hey Michael, if you will allow me to say so, you have evolved into one of my favorite CZcams posters - (especially lately) - with thoughtful, measured, insightful comments relating to the analog audio hobby that we all love. I was interested to hear that you already have a full time commitment elsewhere (your own advertising / graphic design business?), yet are able to devote what is obviously a considerable amount of time to your CZcams content. I know I speak for many others in thanking you for doing so. Keep up the good work - we'll be watching !! James Cox (San Antonio, Texas, USA)

Thank you Michael for your insightful comments. I love your passion for music and the hobby of vinyl collecting. Don't worry about the naysayers, many live in glass houses and want to make fun of those they disagree with. I own the original 1982 release Eye in the sky and it is mint. Purchased in 1982 Thin cardboard and the pressing is fine. For 60 dollars I expect a Tone Poet quality vinyl and a quality Gatefold not a dumbed down version. You are right to challenge the current Mofi release.

Michael, thank you for your wonderful channel and keep up the great work ! You are expanding quickly as you most deserve.
Listening to great vinyl music the way the artist produced it in the studio is most entertaining. When entertaining friends they appreciate the detail and level of quality as well. They find the music as its produced on the equipment to have a cool factor. Enjoy time with great friends.
BUT - When I focus on an artist and have critical listening session on the artists work. I find maybe one or two individuals that understand the entertainment value of critical listening. In most cases I prefer doing it myself and digging into the artists work. Often use Roon to get additional information. Sorry little off topic wanted to share my thoughts.
Bet MoFi makes some changes as you have a great channel and obvious influence.

I appreciate the accurate information you provided. You hit the nail on the head when you talked about us all being on a budget. That means that we have to make informed decisions on where to use our limited funds. For example, I bought the Sade box set. Because I was fore-warned that there were no extras in the box, I could set an "acceptable price" for myself and shop around. The records are top-notch, and sound amazing...but I knew going into it that this was all I was going to get. Ultimately I bought a lightly used NM copy for a reasonable price, enjoy the music, and didn't get upset at the lack of supplemental material.
Thanks for providing a valuable service with your accurate appraisals!

You're absolutely right. "Eye in the Sky" by Hipgnosis design is immaculate, but for MFSL release it could be "pimped up" with golden foil and embossing (I believe, even original release had it). Regarding Eric Clapton "Unplugged" - that's a bit different story, because I think, the picture, selected for cover is a "stop-frame" intentionally taken out of MTV's video - to have this "VHS video watching" effect. That crappy view is a part of design, actually :) But I totally agree with You that audiophile pressings like these should be distinguished from regular pressings not just by "MFSL" writings on top, but to be on par in every other aspect to their price.

I have an original ( most probably a 2nd or 3rd pressing if we're being totally honest here) of "eye in the sky" that sounds fantastic! My copy is a little bit "beat up" , but it STILL sounds amazing! It was his "digital " phase during that time, but it's done so damn well it doesn't matter! I think he used 16 track 2 inch analogue tape for the session recordings, but he used a "Sony " PCM digital tape for the final master!
....But I'd still like to hear it all analogue!

MoFi has been synonymous with "the best" when it came to musical releases for decades but they were essentially the only player in the market. As the market gets more crowded with more labels doing fantastic releases (often for less money), if they want to maintain that title, they need to at least be equal to them in all factors. I really think that the company's future hinges on the "Thriller" release. If that fails to deliver, it will be hard for them to recover.

It´s of course the totality of the purchase that matters,at least for me! From the quality of the pressings, innersleeves and the jackets! It´s been this way for me since the late 70s and it applies today as well! For some i have noticed they almost took it personal that you expressed your mind in this matter and you had the "audacity" to demand top notch according to your standards! I don´t get that! Why should anyone settle for anything less than what one wants?! Especially if there are steap prices involved. If everyone stays silent all the time nothing can ever be rectified! One is called elitist, snob and pretentious just because one has standards. Weird how anyone could get so upset frankly like i have seen in some cases. I agree to some extent with Mofi’s covers but what excites me more is the great sounds coming from their releases in most cases. Let’s see how thing turn out since they are opening their own plant. Give them time. I rather have a release with a great sounding record and an okay jacket design as opposed to an awesome looking jacket design with a crappie sounding pressing. Let's not forget he once made a video called "MUSIC MATTERS JAZZ - The worst reissue label in existence???". Now we all knew this was hyperbole, and similar to the video you did yesterday. The point in both cases is you were both trying to call out companies we hold in high regards that sometimes do things that are questionable. Because they usually DO deliver on their high standards, it sticks out and is noticeable when they do not. Keep making these kinds of videos!

I haven't purchased records for music Direct in a while but I do remember they used to package properly but apparently their packaging is suffering now and many complaints are coming even evidenced by your latest purchase of eye in the sky has a dinged corner. I don't except the defect the record should get to me as purchased I'm buying a new record that record should be new in all aspects.
Acoustic sounds and the Elusive Disc also sell mobile Fidelity products and package their records wonderfully. I've never had any records that I purchased from them arrived with any shipping damage.
Next of all we only have constructive criticism about mobile Fidelity because we love the company and we want to continue purchasing their products. The reason we purchase MO Fi is they have above average quality. When they stop producing this quality we question our purchase.
We love companies like Mofi and Analouge Productions because they're some of the few companies that actually produce great analog records. If we see a problem we owe it to the company to let them know their customers are not satisfied. At some point now the company is losing their vision of what made them great in the first place. This is why I really appreciate your latest video. These are facts that need to be said.
I thank you for it. wonderful video, I enjoyed it so much.

Hello Mike, i totally agree with you brother! and as a paying consumer YOU have a total right to voice your opinion like me and everyone else does. personally i really value your opinion weather i agree or not i still value it! since your video i have seen way too many negative comments(even from record store owners & sellers) simply because you voiced your opinion as a paying customer. well, i think that is bullshit!! and evidently they haven't the intelligence or taken the time to watch a lot of your other review content where i have seen you praise MoFi many, many times for doing a great job along with other vinyl manufacturers and if you have a bad experience or voice your opinion regarding quality i personally look forward to your very honest reviews, which other reviewers i find less than honest many times... it's VERY important that ALL of us in this hobby and vinyl community voice our opinions and even hold the manufacturers accountable when needed, and most of the time they all do a fairly decent job. BUT, let us NOT forget that this IS a business and at the end of the day they are ALL in business to make a profit which is deserved on quality products. Our record and vinyl hobby has exploded and grown in double digits yearly for the last several years and companies also buy other companies from time to time as well along with all the other aspects of business and when any given market is HOT there will always be certain entities/companies jumping into that market in hopes to make money which is fine, BUT, all of us as consumers should review ,and hold accountable when needed, any company that sacrifices quality and customer service and puts money over everything else which is nothing new in the business world. so we should all be happy or at least open minded enough of others reviews and opinions because it hopefully keeps the companies honest and in check which is a benefit to ALL of us in this wonderful hobby of record collecting. the problem in this world today is all the PC, woke bullshit and that if someone is not inline with that groups opinions then all they want to do is bash and cancel others for their views and opinions ,well, fuck those assholes!!! and weather or not you agree with Mike or anyone else for their personal views and/or opinions, at least be respectful and open minded or just shut the fuck up and move along because all of us are never going to agree on everything and on every issue but we can all be respectful and fucking decent to one another! and like cowboy Bob used to say: ""if you can't say anything nice-then don't say anything at all"" thanks for your passion and content brother Mike, it's appreciated. \m/ \m/

lol This made me pull out my original copy of the Alan Parsons and compare it to the sleeve on the 2 LP 45 rpm release from the anniversary box set. I hadn't noticed before but the artwork is different. The collage on the back is reconstructed, but it is a different collage, with different placement and at least 1 image of the original missing. Presumably this accounts for some of the degradation of the images, as they must have taken their images from an existing copy, not the original artwork.

good part 2. I stand by comment on the last video about packaging and quality, but you brought up a good point. With all the new releases coming out almost daily we have to pick and choose what to spend our money on. For me the Alan Parsons was not a must have release for me but I really love the 45rpm versions Mofi does due to the soundscape and separation, which is why I decided to buy over the Speaker's Corner's version. Thank you for putting my mind at ease when it comes to the sound quality. Glad I got the Mofi as its the better sounding version even though the packaging was lacking. Was not familiar with the Mark Knopfler Soundtrack but may look at getting that at some point. We can hope with Mofi new pressing plant that they can do more quality control and up their game for future releases despite all the talk now about them being all digital now and not actual Analog.

In the US, major labels have caught on to the demand for "gourmet" releases (famous album, AAA chain with BG/KPG/RKS mastering, tip-on hardback gatefold, pressed at RTI/Optimal/Pallas, less than $40) and through series that we always talk about, like the Tone Poet or Acoustic Sounds series, a new standard has been set for jazz listeners who don't even see themselves as "audiophiles" or "serious collectors". But it occurs to me that nobody has brought this into the mainstream outside of jazz, where there might be major untapped potential. MFSL has a truly differentiated premium product with the one-steps, and maybe by rethinking the branding/manufacturing of their standard records, they can build credibility/loyalty and provide better records among a broader audience too.

Michael, I really enjoy your channel. I subscribe to a number of vinyl channels but many I stop following. Many get gimmicky or involved in petty issues with other channels. Yours remain fresh and true to why we love vinyl records; the music. the sound, the art, the packaging. I agree with your MOFI view. The package, the jacket is part of the whole vinyl experience. Most audiofile companies understand this, MOFI doesn't . For me Alan Parsons is a borderline artist, with a report of poor packaging I will pass on this one.

The top end of the MoFi Local Hero sounds brash and a bit thin compared to the slightly richer UK original I have. This was an early digital recording and it sounds it. It's the clear that the original's mastering engineer wanted a warmer, analog sounding experience. Gerry Rafferty's vocal has more body via the UK. The MoFi, on the other hand, extends a bit deeper in the bass and is a bit more spacious. Both are very dynamic, but the MoFi is a little bit more-so, but the tonality is more natural on the UK.
Overall, I prefer the UK. It's still great, the transients have plenty of bite. There are aspects to the MoFi that are a bit better, but if you ask me which I'd rather put on, it's the UK.

I just would like to get the definitive one. Bear in mind that as in Carole King's Tapestry, the difference can be dramatic.
Makes sense risking to wait? I believe it will come out as one step.

I agree with your position on the jacket quality. MoFi could have easily replicated the gold foil embossed graphics from the original release. Even the 35th anniversary major label reissue had a beautiful cover. What a missed opportunity. Having the hideous MoFi top strip in all their releases removed would be a dream. I don’t see the reason for it and it reduces the artwork ratio. More importantly can you confirm that MoFi used the original analog tape and not the digital SONY PCM source that was touted in the 1982 release?

  • @KansasRocker
    @KansasRocker Před 2 lety +2

You just want MoFi to step up their game, which they would be wise to listen to. With the recession starting, budget dollars will get tighter and the competition for those dollars will get fiercer.

Totally agree with you, Michael. The bottom line is that these are not cheap releases. If the Alan Parsons was 1/4 of the price: fair enough. But it’s not, so everything (packaging, inner sleeves, booklet etc) should reflect the premium price - no argument. Hoping that the Thriller release later on in the year will be a great overall package. Love your videos!

Funny to listen to this now knowing what Mofi was up to all this time. The lack of any care towards the sleeves or extras and cheap shipping at the same time they were sneaking in digital steps to print more while keeping prices super high. The profit margin on these products must have been huge. Will they ever be taken seriously again? Can they keep charging that much?

Back in the day the original analogue recordings were transferred to 4 track reel to reel (later ones might even be on DAT) for storage and its those tapes that are the basis of all other versions/remixes/remasters there after. Some but not all were also recorded in quad format, the most famous being numerous Pink Floyd albums but there are many others besides. These tapes were transferred to digital at some time in the past cos they were deteriorating from age and used my many producers and studios and with that many were leaked and can be sourced. They are commonly referred to as the multi tracks, but there not true multi track there just original faithful copies of the multitrack mixdown reel to reel tapes done by the engineers. These tapes are the most faithful of the original recordings before being butchered as remasters. The Mofi versions are the second best only surpassed by the tapes themselves, but there the only official way of getting close to those tapes without sourcing the original bootlegs. It should be noted the Alan Parsons Project tapes original are also in quad not sure about Marks cos I don't have them

I’ll personally let Mofi slide on the individual release jackets, although I’d welcome an improvement. To me a much, much bigger issue is the one steps. Having watched both my one step and UHQR box collections grow, this has become a bigger gap in value, functionality and quality.

@@Michael45RPM Well, I would be very interested in it. I somehow forgot to cancel my preorder for the Impex and have bought the regular version on clear vinyl, meanwhile. Now I am on the fence about what to do. There is not too much info out there, but I heard both of the pressings share the same mastering. In this case, the Impex could still turn out a bit better but maybe doesn't justify the significant premium on the price for me (although I am a sucker for Stoughton covers). Anyway, thank you for responding, Michael and I patiently will wait and see -)

Mike at the In Groove however let his ego get the better of him. Rather than disagree with your opinion and write it in the comments section, he chose to do a video aimed squarely at you with the intention to ridicule. Some people thought it was funny. I think he is a knob. Well done for taking it in your stride.

For me the design, the printing quality, the quality of extras, all counts, I like to feel the love the people put in the record - from musicians to designers and technicians. But that's no deal breaker if the music, the record, is of such importance that we have to bite the bullet. Also nothing of this counts if the pressing sucks. That's completely different a good and a bad edition of the same record. There's so many records now that I can't see no reason to pay the Mofi High price.
Please note that gold foil and gold printing are completely different things.

We've got the tail wagging the dog here. It's all about the music, particularly the sound quality from which the music was recorded. If the vinyl sounds like the live recording session, I could live with a blank cardboard jacket. I prefer to pay no more than about 10 to 15 percent of the total cost of the LP for the jacket.

    Hello Michael,
One reason, to collect original first pressings, aside from the usual, but not always, superior sound quality, is for the usually superior visual quality of the album cover art.
First UK pressings of “Eye in the Sky”, are embossed with a gold colored foil treatment.
I personally feel that the foil is a bit too much, for my taste, but because it’s the way original copies were made, I think it should be reproduced that way.
We want the recording to sound as intended, and most of us probably want the cover to be as intended, also.
Don’t know how much extra the embossed gold foil treatment would have cost MoFi, but I think most vinyl enthusiasts would pay some extra for authenticity.
You can see photos of first press covers, on Popsike.
    Michael L.

Bad packaging is nothing new for MoFi - this goes all the way back to their Beatles and Rolling Stones boxed sets, both of which did not even have cover art on the jackets.
But for 40 years, in my opinion, they have delivered exemplary pressings. That is why I buy their releases.
And I stand behind my earlier comment; if you want to effect change, vote with your dollars/Euros/etc. I don't think a critical video on their packaging followed up by rave reviews of their pressings the next day is going to effect much change.
Their pressings are their core competency, always have been.

The two/three aspects you are discussing here, esthetics when it comes to cover art and add ons, as well packaging is dear to any collector’s heart. Anyone who disagrees is either lying or doesn’t care about the hobby as a whole. I started collecting in ‘79, and to this day buy and re-buy records that didn’t include add ons/extras when I purchased them a kid. The other thing about packaging/shipping is also a factor that is important, especially for someone like me who moved his entire collection from Germany to the States and was sweating bullets every day until my records came to my house in the States. Bei dem clip von gestern gab es eigentlich nichts falsch zu verstehen…

I for one think that the AP release is beautiful in all aspects and every bit the equal of the latest Steely Dan releases jackets. The AP release is “stunning” and one of the best releases done by MOFI. The AP- Alan Parsons release is right up there with the Dire Straits releases. Stop the Hoo Haw and complete BS that MOFI jackets are somehow inferior to others! Yes, I have VP records and all the others. Go see and feel for yourself - what Michael has presented is absolutely 100% Hoo Haw - not that jackets don’t matter - they do and MOFI’S compete with the best and the jacket for the questioned album is stunning and beautiful!

Mo-Fi have always been synonymous with their branded jackets rather than replicating the original jacket and labels. Never have attempted to do the same thing as Analog Productions or Classic Records. I do not see them changing from their distinctive packaging. It makes them stand out. If you want authentic vintage covers look elsewhere. I agree the one step boxes are really shoddy for the price charged.
