Is JUNK SILVER Making a Comeback?

  • In this video I talk about junk silver and if it is good for silver stacking or silver investing. We dive into junk silver premiums and discuss if it is good to be buying right now or not. If you are wondering what junk silver is then this is the video for you. Junk silver is US Mint half dollars, quarters, and dimes that are from 1964 or older. $1 Face Value (circulated) of junk silver = .715 Troy Ounces and $1.40 Face Value = about 1 Troy Ounce. When you are calculating prices $1 of junk silver face value can be any combination of coins. When looking at junk silver vs bullion it is clear that junk silver can be harder to price and buy. Junk silver investing can be done with confidence when you use my face value multipliers in my updated junk silver buying guide in the following video:

I am a coin collector first and a stacker by happy coincidence.
I will never get used to calling constitutional silver junk silver. Granted we may not have the most beautiful coins in the world, but we used to. Back in the first half of the 20th century our coinage was, in my opinion, spectacular. They were coins that you could show proudly. Now, not so much. But regardless that is still constitutional silver.
As far as I’m concerned junk silver is sterling and other objects made of silver. So can we just keep them separate.

When I started collecting coins as a kid about 25 years ago the coin dealer I went to call all silver coins (no matter where they were minted) coin silver. He never called anything junk or constitutional. He's refer to it by percentage, then coin silver and if it was foreign by country of mintage. He was pretty old school (in his 70s at that point) and he was great to deal with so I went to him often and picked up the habit of calling it that. Frankly I think that's the best solution

So, for the current silver price of $22.93 per troy ounce, $1 face is worth ~16.4 times face for silver value, so 20x face is about 22% premium, which is a little high, but not bad. America was founded with SILVER. The majority of wealth in SILVER was in the common citizens hands with gold being a rarity. In the mid to late 1800's the gold rush in addition to the silver bonanza's came the "gold standard" (encouraged by the bankers) which leveraged their control over the markets with the scarcer metal which they had majority ownership. Then it went downhill from there. As a stacker, I wanted Constitutional Roosevelt dimes (Exel. condition) to prep for barter trade when the Petro dollar was threatened by Saudi Arabia not taking Biden's call a couple years ago.

I don't subscribe to "junk silver", or to "constitutional silver"...both terms have negative implications. What's wrong with just calling what it actually is, 90% US silver coinage? Seriously???
I'm in the camp who hates the term junk silver. Such a thing does not exist. And "constitutional coinage", ruffles my feathers too, because it is so frigging nationalistic. But then, stackers tend to be nationalists, survivalists...dare I say, Anti-Institutionalists, even Anti-American?
The premiums on 90% have been horribly high in recent years. But, like this summer is the hottest on record, it may be the coolest we'll ever see again, so it is with premiums on 90%. It is a limited, and diminishing commodity. With the premiums on 90% competing with premiums on ASEs, there is not much reason to believe the premiumus will decline. There are no more 90% circulation strikes ever again to be available, and the supply diminishes annually.
It's LONG PAST time to abandon the crap "Junk Silver" handle.
